For a typical full-size spinach crop, thin crowded seedlings when they are about 1 inch tall and leave roughly 2 to 4 inches between plants. Extension guidance varies by region and by how you plan to harvest, so treat that range as a starting point and check it against your local recommendations or the instructions on your seed packet.
Thin at about 1 inch tall, to roughly 2 to 4 inches apart
University of Illinois Extension gives the clearest practical cue: thin when seedlings are about one inch tall, and leave 2 to 4 inches between plants for full-size spinach. The sources do not all agree on the final spacing, so the table below shows what each one recommends.
| Source | Recommended spacing for full-size plants | Timing cue given |
|---|---|---|
| North Carolina State University Extension | 2 to 3 inches | Not stated in the source reviewed |
| University of Illinois Extension | 2 to 4 inches | About 1 inch tall |
| UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program | 3 to 6 inches | After plants are up and growing |
| Penn State Extension | Not stated in the source reviewed | Thin to avoid crowding; roots are shallow at this stage |
In practice, the narrower 2 to 3 inch spacing suits a bunched harvest of small leaves, while 3 to 6 inches gives each plant room to reach a larger size. If your seed packet or local extension office gives a specific figure for your cultivar or area, follow that over the general range.
When thinning is optional
Thinning is not always necessary. If you plan to harvest the whole plant young, Illinois Extension says closer spacing without thinning is satisfactory. The trade-off is that you give up larger individual plants.

- Adjustable screw for proper tension and comfortable use.

If you want full-size plants, thin. Penn State Extension warns that crowding can lead to stunted growth and premature bolting, which is when the plant sends up a flower stalk and its leaves turn bitter.
How to thin seedlings without damaging the ones you keep
Spinach roots are shallow at this stage, so the main risk is disturbing the seedlings you intend to keep. Penn State Extension advises thinning gently. You do not need a specialized tool.

- Wait for the right size. Begin when most seedlings are about 1 inch tall, so that you can see which ones are strongest.
- Water the bed lightly the day before, if the soil is dry. Moist soil lets the roots of the remaining plants stay anchored when neighbours are removed.
- Choose the strongest seedlings. Keep plants that are upright, evenly coloured and spaced roughly where you want them.
- Pinch or snip the unwanted seedlings at soil level. Cutting them keeps the roots of the keepers undisturbed better than pulling.
- Re-check the spacing after one pass. Remove any remaining clusters so that each keeper stands alone at your chosen distance.
Sowing in clusters: what the seed packet means
Seed packets sometimes say to sow a group of three seeds every 6 inches. Gardeners often ask whether the three seeds should go into one spot. A common reading is that the three seeds are sown together as a cluster, the cluster is spaced 6 inches from the next one, and the seedlings are then thinned to a single plant per cluster. The seeds are not meant to grow as one bunch of three in the same place.
This question appears often in informal discussion, such as this gardening community thread on planting three seeds every six inches. Treat that thread as reader wording, not as horticultural authority; the extension guidance above is the more reliable reference.

Timing the season
Spinach is a cool-season crop. North Carolina State Extension notes that increasing day length and heat can cause it to bolt and make the leaves bitter. The best sowing window therefore depends on your location and climate, so there is no single calendar date that works everywhere. Check local extension guidance for the sowing and thinning dates in your area.
Checklist before you thin
- Seedlings are about 1 inch tall.
- You know whether you want full-size plants or whole young plants for harvest.
- The target spacing matches your extension guidance or seed packet.
- Soil is lightly moist, not waterlogged or dry and crusted.
- Unwanted seedlings are cut at soil level, leaving the keepers undisturbed.
If you need more seed
If you are resowing a bed or planting a second round later in the season, buy fresh spinach seed and sow it according to the timing guidance for your area. You do not need a seed packet to thin seedlings that are already growing.
