A calendar date is only a rough check, because the same variety can be ready in late September in one garden and not until late October in another.
How to tell a pumpkin is ready
No single signal settles the question. Variety, weather, and whether you plan to display or store the fruit all shape the decision. Use the three checks below together.
Mature color for the variety
Orange is common, but it is not the only mature color. Compare the fruit with the color described for your cultivar on the seed packet or plant tag rather than assuming every ripe pumpkin is orange. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advises looking for deep, uniform color. Connecticut’s guidance, dated October 2026, likewise asks for full mature color on the fruit’s surface.
A rind that resists your fingernail
Press a fingernail or thumbnail into the skin in an inconspicuous spot. A mature pumpkin has a hard, shiny shell that will not puncture easily, according to Nebraska Extension. Colorado State University’s PlantTalk gives the same test. If the skin dents or scratches easily, leave the fruit on the vine a little longer, provided frost is not imminent.

The stem and the vine
The stem should be dry and beginning to turn brown, and the vine and leaves often start to die back as the fruit matures. Connecticut’s guidance treats a dry brown stem and vine dieback as supporting signs. A green, fleshy stem usually means the fruit still needs time.
Harvest before frost, not on a fixed date
Frost is the deadline that matters most. Extension sources agree that mature pumpkins can survive a light frost that kills the vines, but they differ on where the line falls for the fruit itself. The table compares the regional thresholds each source gives. These are guides for their own regions, not guarantees for every variety, exposure, or forecast.

Fruit that is still green when a killing frost arrives will not ripen normally afterward. Nebraska Extension states that green, immature pumpkins will not turn orange after a killing frost. If you are facing a hard freeze and the fruit is not colored or hard, harvest it anyway and use it for display or cooking rather than long-term storage.
How to cut the stem and carry the fruit
Use a sharp tool. Garden pruning shears, a sharp knife, or loppers all work, and extension sources list them as alternatives. Clean, sharp cuts reduce ragged wounds that can invite decay.

- Locate the stem junction. Work from the vine side, not the fruit side, so you cut only the stem.
- Cut with the stem attached. Leave about 3 to 5 inches of stem, as Iowa State University Extension and Outreach suggests. Maryland Extension recommends 3 to 4 inches. These are useful guides rather than a required length. Stems that stay on are less likely to let rot in.
- Lift from the base or body. Support the fruit under its bottom. Never carry a pumpkin by the stem, because the stem can break away.
- Avoid cuts and bruises. Set fruit down rather than dropping it, and do not stack it on hard edges. Any cut or scrape is an entry point for decay.
Curing and storage for pumpkins you want to keep
Curing is worth doing if you want the fruit to last into winter, though it is a recommendation rather than a rule. Iowa State describes the steps below for pumpkins intended for storage. The University of California’s Agriculture and Natural Resources guidance describes curing as potentially helpful for nearly mature fruit, so treat it as a useful practice rather than a requirement for every pumpkin.
- Cure for 10 days. Hold the fruit at 80 to 85°F and about 80% relative humidity. Curing helps harden the skin and heal small cuts and scratches.
- Move to cool storage. Store the cured fruit at 50 to 55°F in a cool, dry location.
- Keep the fruit in a single layer. Separate each pumpkin so air can circulate around it.
- Check regularly. Remove any fruit that begins to decay so it does not spread to its neighbors.
Common problems and what to do
- Fruit is still green at the first frost. It will not ripen afterward. Use it for immediate display or cooking, not storage.
- The stem snapped off. Use the pumpkin soon and keep it out of storage, because a stemless fruit is more likely to rot.
- Soft spots or a dent that gives under light pressure. Move that fruit to the front of your use list; if the soft area spreads or smells sour, discard it.
- Frost is forecast and the vines are still green. Harvest mature fruit now, even if it is not perfectly colored, to avoid freezing.
Pumpkins harvested under these conditions, with sound skin, a dry stem, and a short cure, give the best chance of keeping well through the winter.
