There is no species difference: yellow-poplar and tulip poplar are common names for the same tree, Liriodendron tulipifera. In forestry and lumber contexts, “yellow-poplar” is a common name for its wood as well as the tree. Despite “poplar” in the name, it belongs to the magnolia family, not the true poplars.

Yellow-poplar and tulip poplar are the same species

Both names refer to Liriodendron tulipifera. USDA Forest Service sources commonly use “yellow-poplar,” while USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and National Park Service materials also use “tulip poplar” or “tuliptree.” When a label or listing leaves the common name unclear, the scientific name is the precise way to identify the species.

USDA NRCS also lists “tulip magnolia” and “whitewood” among the species’ common names. These are naming variations, not separate kinds of tree. USDA NRCS Tulip Poplar Plant Guide; USDA Forest Service, Silvics of North America: Yellow-Poplar

Why “poplar” is misleading

The name does not indicate the tree’s botanical family. Liriodendron tulipifera is in Magnoliaceae, the magnolia family; true poplars belong to a different genus. The USDA NRCS plant guide puts it plainly: “Despite its common name, tulip poplar is not a poplar and instead, belongs to the Magnolia family (Magnoliaceae).”

Tulip Poplar Tree, Yellow Blossoms, Lustrous Green Foliage, Deciduous, 2-3 ft Tree Height, 1 gal Nursery Pot (Due to Agricultural Laws, we Cannot Ship to CA, AZ, AK, or HI)
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: Typically Zones 4-9
  • Tall deciduous tree with unique tulip-shaped flowers and distinctive lobed leaves
  • Flourishes in well-drained, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH
  • Yellow-green tulip-like flowers, softwood timber, and a straight, tall trunk

So if you are comparing two tree labels, “yellow-poplar” and “tulip poplar” do not distinguish a true poplar from another species. They are alternative common names for the same magnolia-family tree. USDA NRCS Tulip Poplar Plant Guide

What the name means on a lumber listing

“Yellow-poplar” is an established forestry and wood name for this species. USDA Forest Service describes yellow-poplar wood as commercially valuable and versatile. A lumber listing using “yellow-poplar” is therefore using a recognized name for the wood of Liriodendron tulipifera, rather than identifying a separate tree from tulip poplar.

How to recognize the tree

On a living tree, look for its distinctive lobed leaves and tulip-like flowers. The flowers can be easy to miss: they often grow high in the outer canopy and blend with the foliage, so a lack of visible flowers from the ground does not rule out the tree. The species is native to eastern North America; published government descriptions differ somewhat in their stated range endpoints, so use a range map for a precise location check.
