Double-sided tape bonds two surfaces with adhesive on both faces. The right type depends on what you are joining, the surface shape, the bond thickness and load, the conditions it will face, and whether it must be removable. Film, tissue, foam, acrylic foam, and transfer tapes have different constructions and are not interchangeable.
What is double-sided tape?
Double-sided tape, also called double-faced or double-coated tape, has adhesive on each side: one face attaches to one material, and the other attaches to another. In supported tape, a carrier sits between the adhesive coatings. The carrier may be paper, plastic film, tissue, or foam, and can affect how the tape suits heat and other application demands. 3M explains the distinction between supported tape and transfer tape.
Adhesive transfer tape has no carrier: it is a thin adhesive layer supplied on a release liner. Apply the adhesive to one substrate, remove the liner, then press the second substrate into place. Its low profile can suit applications where a thicker carrier is unwanted.
What are the main types and uses?
Film tape
Film tape is thin and dimensionally stable, making it a common option for smooth materials such as glass, metal, and plastic. Its thin construction is useful where a low-profile bond is needed. tesa describes film tape among its mounting options.

- DOUBLE SIDED TAPE FOR CRAFTS: 3 rolls of Scotch Double Sided Tape, each with a Tape Dispenser, offers a neat, clean, strong and long-lasting way to hold art and crafts projects together, making it a great addition to your crafting supplies
- MESS-FREE BONDING ADHESIVE: Both sides of the tape are coated with permanent adhesive for a strong, secure hold without the drips, clogs and air bubbles similar to white glue
- INVISIBLE TAPE: This double-sided clear tape holds things together without being seen, making it a less messy alternative to glue for school, art and office supplies
- TAPE WITH NO LINING, HAS PROTECTIVE WRAP: While the tape does not have a peel away liner, unlike scrapbook tape, there is an 8" protective liner that needs to be removed before tape can start dispensing
- IDEAL FOR SCHOOL, ART AND OFFICE SUPPLIES: Perfect for creating scrapbooks, cardmaking, paper crafts, gift wrapping, home decor projects, collages, holding work documents together, mixed media art and party decorations
Tissue and non-woven tape
Tissue or non-woven carriers make tape flexible and conformable, which can help with curved, irregular, or textured surfaces. Examples of applications include laminating foam, textiles, leather, or paper, as well as flooring and nameplate mounting. Selected products in this family may be designed for residue-free removal, but that feature is product-specific. See tesa’s tissue tape guidance and its mounting applications guide.
Foam tape
Foam tape is a thicker mounting option available in different thicknesses, densities, adhesives, and backing materials. Depending on the product, it can help absorb vibration, protect a surface, or provide insulation. Check its specified substrates and conditions rather than assuming all foam tapes provide the same performance. tesa outlines foam tape applications.

- 【Diversified Uses to Meet All Your Needs】- Strong Holding Power can effectively mount or repair stuff without drilling hole or nails, fixing or pasting items such as picture hangers, frames, photos, festival decorations, wall paper stickers, posters, hooks, floating shelves, desk holders, carpets, power sockets, art crafts, board shelf, LED, DIY items, school & house room decor aesthetic and so on.
- 【A Daily Essential You Actually Use】- EZlifego all-purpose tape just makes every project easy. PRO TIP: For planned removal use only on solid surfaces. Removal Method: Peel slowly parallel to the surface (0° angle), do not pull directly upward. Avoid adhesive residue or potential surface damage.
Acrylic foam and core tape
Acrylic foam or core tape is used in demanding mounting applications, often where a more permanent bond is intended. The label alone does not establish suitability: the material being bonded and its service environment still determine the appropriate product. tesa’s heavy-duty selection guidance discusses matching tape to the application.
Adhesive transfer tape
Transfer tape leaves a thin adhesive layer without a carrier, useful when a low-profile bond is preferred. Examples include foam lamination, textile mounting, leather fabrication, lightweight signs, and membrane switches. Product guidance from 3M and tesa covers this construction and its applications.

Removable tape
Some tapes are designed for temporary bonding or for removal by a specified method. Removability—and whether removal leaves residue—depends on the particular product, the substrate, and how it is used. Do not assume generic double-sided tape will peel away cleanly.
How do you choose the right tape?
Start with the actual materials and surface condition, then narrow the choice using the geometry, bond requirements, environment, and removal needs. A tape described as “strong” is not automatically the right choice: the best fit depends on the particular surfaces and conditions.

- Strong Adhesion: This transparent foam tape is made of the latest material: gel-acrylic, the adhesion is 3 times of the regular adhesive tape
- User-friendly: Adopted the nano-micro-molecular technology, our mounting tape is removable, residue-free, reuseable after washing, recyclable
- Damage-free: Compared to traditional fixing methods screw, nail, it will not damage your attached objects. Leave no trace after removal
- Multipurpose: It can be used in home, office, car for wall hanging, applicance fixing, wall panel and carpet installation
- Substrates and surface condition: Identify both materials and whether their surfaces are smooth, textured, porous, or otherwise difficult to bond.
- Shape and fit: Consider whether the surfaces are flat, curved, irregular, or uneven. A conformable construction may be more appropriate for a non-flat surface.
- Bond thickness: Decide whether you need a thin bond line or a thicker mounting layer to bridge a gap or suit the assembly.
- Load and duration: Account for the forces the bond will face and whether it is temporary or intended to remain in place.
- Exposure: Check the expected temperature and humidity, as well as any UV or chemical exposure relevant to the installation. Confirm the chosen product’s stated limits.
- Removal: If the tape must come off later, identify the intended debonding method and confirm removal behavior for the exact product and substrate.
For a real product comparison, look at carrier or backing and thickness, adhesive type, recommended substrates and surface geometry, load and intended bond duration, environmental limits, and removal method. Compare claims made under equivalent conditions; a headline strength figure by itself does not establish which tape is best for your job. tesa’s mounting guide and heavy-duty selection guide emphasize application-specific selection.

There is no single application or surface-preparation method established for every double-sided tape. Follow the selected product’s instructions for the exact materials and working conditions, including any preparation, application, and removal requirements. Do not transfer a removal claim or application procedure from one tape family to another.
