Olympia’s Phase 1 plans for Jolene Unsoeld Community Park cover far more than a sports field: the project includes recreation facilities, site and road work, and park maintenance buildings. A public bid notice estimated the work at $20–30 million, but the available records do not confirm the title’s $17.7 million figure as an approved construction contract. The City said in September 2026 that construction was planned to begin in fall 2026; that schedule statement does not confirm that work has started.
What is Jolene Unsoeld Community Park?
The park is the property formerly known as Yelm Highway Community Park. Olympia City Council adopted the name Jolene Unsoeld Community Park on January 27, 2026. The naming action reported no financial impact from the name itself; signage and related expenses were to be considered through individual park planning. Read the City Council naming action.

Phase 1 is a multi-part park and municipal-facilities project. A March 2026 City agenda item concerning design services listed a park maintenance office and shop buildings, parking and storage elements, and a full-size lighted synthetic turf soccer field. See the Phase 1 design agenda.

Is the approved construction contract $17.7 million?
The available records do not verify $17.7 million as the approved construction contract amount. A revised public bid notice published August 7, 2026 gives an estimated project cost range of $20–30 million. That is an estimate in the notice, not evidence of the final award or the amount ultimately paid.

The City Council’s June 2, 2026 meeting record lists an agreement with Berger Partnership for construction-administration support. The City resolution describes the firm’s role in master planning and subsequent design and construction support; it does not identify Berger as the construction contractor. The available records do not establish the contractor or confirm a final construction award amount. When was construction expected to start?
In an update distributed September 18, 2026, the City said first-phase construction was planned to begin in fall 2026. The update did not provide a completion date, and a planned start is not confirmation that construction has begun. Read the City’s September 2026 update.

What changes are planned for Spooner’s access?
The City update said a required road-safety improvement would close Spooner’s current access from Yelm Highway. The City said it was discussing alternatives with the business. The update did not specify the final access arrangement.
