Google Home app 4.2 was released on October 28, 2025. It added smoother camera-history scrolling on iOS, a cleaner camera viewer on Android and iOS, and expanded Nest × Yale Lock controls in Public Preview. It is a historical release—not the latest Google Home version in 2026.
Google’s official release notes also list several stability and bug fixes. Because Google used gradual rollouts, installing version 4.2 did not guarantee immediate access to every feature.

Google Home 4.2: Android and iOS feature comparison
| Feature | Android | iOS | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleaner camera viewer | Yes | Yes | Gradual rollout |
| Smoother camera-history scrolling | Not specifically listed | Yes | Gradual rollout |
| Lock history and notifications | Public Preview | Public Preview | Account and device dependent |
| Lock battery status and additional settings | Public Preview | Public Preview | Account and device dependent |
| Create or change Nest × Yale passcodes | Specifically listed | Not specified | Public Preview |
| Setup and crash fixes | Yes | Some fixes not applicable | App update |
| Grouped-light tile count fix | No | Yes, Public Preview | App update |
The biggest distinction is platform-specific: Google specifically described camera-history improvements for iOS and passcode creation and editing for Android. The release notes do not establish that both platforms received identical functionality.
Smoother camera-history scrolling on iOS
For iPhone and iPad users, Google Home 4.2 improved the camera-history timeline’s frame rate, loading performance, scrolling smoothness, and general responsiveness when reviewing recorded events.
#1 Best Overall
- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
This is a playback-navigation improvement. It does not mean version 4.2 added longer recording retention, higher camera resolution, faster live streaming, or new detection categories. Those capabilities should not be attributed to this release.
A less cluttered camera viewer on Android and iOS
Google also cleaned up the camera viewer on both platforms. Several controls are hidden until you tap the video player, reducing visual clutter while you watch live footage or a recorded event.
- Open a camera or recorded event in Google Home.
- Tap the video player.
- Use the playback controls that appear.
- Tap away, or wait, for the controls to disappear again.
Google’s notes do not identify every hidden button, so the change should be understood as a general interface cleanup rather than a documented list of newly relocated controls.

Expanded Nest × Yale Lock controls
Version 4.2 expanded Nest × Yale Lock support in Google Home’s Public Preview. Google listed access to:
- Lock history
- Lock notifications
- Battery-status information
- Additional lock settings
- Passcode creation and editing for Android users
Google specifically called out passcode creation and editing for Android. It is therefore inaccurate to promise identical passcode-management features on iOS. The broader history, notification, battery, and settings expansion applied to the Public Preview experience and could depend on the account, home, hardware, region, and Google’s server-side rollout.
Public Preview also matters because these controls were not guaranteed final functionality. Google could change their interface or behavior, and version 4.2 did not necessarily move every Nest × Yale Lock user to the same controls at once.
Rank #3
- Google Nest Hub 1st Gen H1A – 7-inch smart display with Google Assistant built in for hands-free help, smart home control, entertainment, and daily organization.
- Korean Spec Model – International/Korean version of the Google Nest Hub H1A. Language can be changed to English after setup through the Google Home app/device settings.
- Smart Home Control – Use voice commands or the touchscreen to control compatible smart lights, cameras, thermostats, plugs, speakers, and other Google Assistant devices.
- Entertainment & Daily Help – Stream music, watch videos, view Google Photos, check weather, set timers, manage reminders, follow recipes, and get answers hands-free.
- Compact 7" Display Design – Great for kitchens, bedrooms, desks, offices, counters, and nightstands with a clean modern smart display design.
The lock requires Nest Connect to communicate with Wi-Fi and the Nest service; it does not connect directly to Wi-Fi.
Bug fixes in Google Home 4.2
Not every change was a new feature. Google also reported fixes for:
- A lock controller that flickered or repeatedly changed status while the lock was jammed.
- An Android setup flow where the Cancel button could become unresponsive after QR-code scanning.
- Incorrect light-tile counts for grouped lights in iOS Public Preview.
- Two Android crash issues.
These fixes may be more important than the visible redesign for users who experienced unreliable lock status, setup failures, or app crashes.
Was Google Home 4.2 a Gemini update?
Not primarily. Although it arrived during Google Home’s broader redesign and Gemini-related transition, the official 4.2 notes focus on camera navigation, camera-viewer design, Nest × Yale Lock controls, and stability.
Later Gemini for Home capabilities should not be folded into the 4.2 feature list. Google’s chronological release notes identify later app versions and releases separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Google used gradual rollout for several 4.2 changes. Two people with the same nominal app version could therefore see different interfaces.

If a feature is missing:
- Confirm that Google Home is updated through the official Google Play or App Store listing.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Check that the camera, doorbell, or lock is linked to the correct Google Home.
- Check whether the feature requires Public Preview access.
- For a Nest × Yale Lock, verify that Nest Connect is installed and connected.
- Confirm your account permissions and home membership.
- Wait for the server-side rollout. Reinstalling the app may not activate a staged feature.
Avoid sideloading unofficial Android packages as a first response, particularly for an app that controls cameras and door locks.
How to check for Google Home 4.2
Android
- Open Google Play and search for Google Home.
- Open the listing published by Google LLC.
- Tap Update if it is available, or Open if the app is already current.
- Use the app-information screen to check the installed version.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the App Store and search for Google Home.
- Open the Google-published listing.
- Tap Update if available.
- Check the listing or device settings for version information.
Store availability can vary by device, operating-system version, account, and geography. The current Google Play listing showed a July 9, 2026 update date, so version 4.2 is no longer the current Google Home release. The app is now described in broader Gemini-for-Home terms.
Should you install or research version 4.2?
Version 4.2 was most relevant to iOS users who review camera history, Android users who manage Nest × Yale Lock passcodes, and anyone affected by the lock, setup, light-tile, or crash bugs. Users without cameras, doorbells, or a Nest × Yale Lock received relatively little beyond the cleaner camera interface.
The trade-offs were modest: hiding camera controls made the viewer less busy but added a tap before those controls appeared; Public Preview lock tools offered broader management but were subject to change; and staged rollout meant the app version alone did not determine feature access.
For current Google Home capabilities, consult Google’s release-note history rather than treating 4.2 as the latest app experience.
