Google Home app version 3.40, released in September 2025, introduced its most significant improvement in the automation editor: conditions such as days, presence and device status. It also added camera event filters, expanded controls for some older UK and EU Nest Thermostats, and Suggested Favorites.

However, version 3.40 is now a historical release. As of August 18, 2026, the US App Store listed version 4.25.29 for iOS, while APKMirror listed Android version 4.25.18.0. Install the latest version available for your device rather than trying to obtain 3.40.

Google Home 3.40 at a glance

Change Availability Important limitation
Automation conditions Android and iOS release family Available options can vary by device, account and rollout
Camera event filters Android and iOS release family Event categories depend on the camera and account
Suggested Favorites Android and iOS release family Mainly shown to users with no existing Favorites
Hot-water thermostat controls Model- and region-dependent Primarily certain older UK and EU Nest Thermostats
Bug fixes Android and iOS Included an iOS setup-layout fix and a limited-member lock-settings fix

Google’s release-note date for version 3.40 was September 19, 2025. Platform builds were not identical: an Android build identified as 3.40.48.3 appeared separately from the iOS 3.40.54 listing. These numbers reflect platform-specific builds and rollout timing, not one universal release timestamp. See Google’s Google Home release notes for the official update information.

The new automation editor adds conditions

The headline change was the addition of conditions to the Google Home automation editor. Before this release, an automation generally relied on starters and actions: something happened, and Google Home carried out the selected action. Conditions add another layer by allowing the automation to run only when specified circumstances are true.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Show 5 (newest model), Smart display, Designed for Alexa+, 2x the bass and clearer sound, Glacier White
  • Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
  • Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
  • See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
  • See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.

Google described conditions including:

  • Days of the week
  • Presence, such as whether someone is home
  • Device status, such as whether a device is on or off

To open the editor, use Automations tab → Create (+) → New automation. Labels can vary slightly by platform, language, account or later app revision.

For example, you could design an automation that turns on lights at sunset only when someone is home, runs a heating routine on weekdays but not weekends, or starts an action only when a door sensor or switch is in a particular state. These are illustrative uses of the conditions system, not promises that every device supports every trigger or action.

Conditions can reduce unnecessary automation runs because a starter no longer has to trigger an action every time. They do not, however, make automations suitable for safety-critical tasks. Google warns that automations can depend on Wi-Fi, internet access, Google services and third-party devices, and may fail to start or stop. Do not use one as the sole protection for medical alerts, emergency notifications, security-critical locks, flood prevention, overheating protection or other situations where failure could cause injury or damage.

Expanded controls for some Nest Thermostats

Version 3.40 expanded Google Home controls for certain older Nest Thermostat models, particularly in the UK and EU. The additions included:

  • Hot-water controls
  • Hot-water schedules
  • Easier Eco controls
  • Outdoor temperature information
  • Additional thermostat controls

These features are not universal upgrades for every Nest Thermostat. Availability depends on the thermostat model, installation, region and account. US users, in particular, should not expect the hot-water controls available on some UK and EU installations.

Camera event filters move into the camera view

Google Home 3.40 added event-type filters directly inside a camera’s own events experience. Depending on the camera and account, filters may include categories such as people, vehicles or other supported event types.

  • Smart Home Control – Use voice commands or the touchscreen to control compatible smart lights, cameras, thermostats, plugs, speakers, and other Google Assistant devices.
  • Entertainment & Daily Help – Stream music, watch videos, view Google Photos, check weather, set timers, manage reminders, follow recipes, and get answers hands-free.
  • Compact 7" Display Design – Great for kitchens, bedrooms, desks, offices, counters, and nightstands with a clean modern smart display design.

This differs from whole-home filtering in the Activity tab. The Activity tab remains useful when you want to search events across the home; the camera-specific view is more convenient when you are investigating one camera.

Do not assume that every Nest camera displays person or vehicle filters. Available categories depend on the camera model, its detection capabilities, any applicable subscription such as Nest Aware, and regional availability.

Suggested Favorites help new users organize the Home tab

Users who had not selected any Favorites began seeing suggested device Favorites in the Favorites tab. These suggestions are shortcuts to devices already associated with the user’s home, intended to make frequently used controls easier to reach.

  • ALL YOUR FAVORITES, ALL RIGHT HERE - Built-in Fire TV unlocks endless entertainment, so you can enjoy your favorite content from thousands of apps like Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV, and more (subscription may be required). Fire TV remote included. Plus, now you can quickly add a device to play music with Active Media - start playing a song in the kitchen, then add the living room and bedroom on the fly.

  • YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES ON DISPLAY - Brighten your space (and your day) by turning your home screen into a photo slideshow that displays your favorite memories. Auto curate your images and show off your favorite family memories.

This was primarily an onboarding improvement. Google did not describe Suggested Favorites as a hardware recommendation system. If you already had Favorites configured, version 3.40 was not expected to replace your arrangement. Suggested entries could be edited or removed.

Bug fixes in version 3.40

Google also listed two reliability fixes:

  • iOS setup layout: Fixed an issue in which some users could not see the full screen while entering a custom room name or Wi-Fi password during device setup.
  • Lock settings: Fixed an error affecting some limited-access Member accounts when they opened lock settings. This did not necessarily expand the permissions available to those members.

How to update Google Home

Because 3.40 is obsolete, update through the official store rather than searching for an old package.

Google’s Google Home compatibility and help guidance notes that compatible devices are required and that some products and features may not be available in every region.

What to do if a 3.40 feature is missing

  1. Confirm that Google Home is updated through Google Play or the App Store.
  2. Check the device model and installation requirements, especially for thermostat and camera features.
  3. Check your account role and permissions, particularly in shared homes and for locks.
  4. Review country, region and language settings where relevant.
  5. Force-close and reopen Google Home.
  6. On Android, update the relevant device firmware and Google Play services if applicable.
  7. Check Google’s current release notes because some features may roll out separately or depend on server-side availability.

Do not sideload an old 3.40 APK simply to obtain these features. Older app versions may contain security or compatibility problems, and later releases supersede the functionality introduced in 3.40.

Is Google Home 3.40 worth installing now?

Not as a current installation target. The release was worthwhile for automation-heavy users, owners of compatible older UK or EU thermostats, Nest camera users who frequently search events, and people setting up a Google Home for the first time. Other users may have noticed little change.

For current functionality, install the latest version offered for your Android or iOS device and consult Google’s live release notes. Version 3.40 remains useful as the release that introduced these automation conditions, camera filters, thermostat improvements and Suggested Favorites, but it is no longer the current Google Home app version.
