There is no single wire size for every 50-amp circuit. As ampacity-based starting points, a 2023 NEC-based guide lists 8 AWG copper or 6 AWG aluminum with 75°C-rated terminations, and 6 AWG copper or 4 AWG aluminum with 60°C-rated terminations. Those figures are conditional: equipment terminals, wiring method, load, ambient temperature, conductor count, run length and locally adopted code requirements can change the selection.
50-amp wire sizes at a glance
| Termination rating | Copper starting point | Aluminum starting point |
|---|---|---|
| 75°C | 8 AWG | 6 AWG |
| 60°C | 6 AWG | 4 AWG |
These are ampacity-based starting points reported by AmpSizer’s guide based on the 2023 NEC, accessed in 2026. They are not a universal installation prescription. The applicable conductor and ampacity depend on the actual installation and the equipment’s marked terminal ratings.
Why the terminal rating matters
Conductor insulation may carry a temperature rating, but that alone does not establish which ampacity value is permitted for the circuit. Check the equipment terminals and the installation method, as well as the locally adopted code and any amendments. Do not assume that insulation marked for a higher temperature lets you use the highest ampacity column.
As one manufacturer example, Southwire lists 6 AWG copper THHN cable at 52 A in the 75°C column and 60 A in the 90°C column, with values based on 2023 NEC Table 310.16. Those are the manufacturer’s stated table-based cable figures—not proof that a particular installation can use the 90°C value for final sizing. Southwire also notes that its values do not account for every overcurrent-protection limitation. See Southwire specification 85047.

Check the wiring method and installation conditions
The conductor must be suitable for the wiring method: for example, individual conductors installed in a raceway are not interchangeable with any cable assembly that happens to have the same gauge. Verify that the specific conductor or cable is approved for its use and compatible with the equipment terminals.
The 2023 NEC-based starting figures above assume 30°C ambient temperature and no more than three current-carrying conductors. Higher ambient temperatures or more current-carrying conductors can affect allowable ampacity and may require a larger conductor. Local code adoption, amendments, permits and inspection requirements also matter; the cited guide does not establish what a particular jurisdiction enforces.

Account for continuous loads
A continuous load can require more conductor capacity than a noncontinuous load of the same nominal current. NFPA code-development material reproduces proposed branch-circuit language based on the noncontinuous load plus 125% of the continuous load. Because that material is a proposal record, not proof of the rule adopted in a given location, verify the final applicable requirements with the locally adopted code and authority having jurisdiction. See NFPA’s 2023 NEC code-development material.

Voltage drop can make run length relevant even when a conductor meets an ampacity starting point. In one AmpSizer example, a 50 A, 100-foot, 240 V single-phase run is sized at 6 AWG copper to meet the page’s 3% voltage-drop target. That result assumes the conditions specified in the example, including 75°C terminations; it is not a distance chart for other voltages, conductor arrangements or design targets.

How to choose the right wire for your circuit
- Identify the load and circuit. Determine whether the load is continuous, and confirm the circuit voltage and equipment requirements.
- Check the equipment markings. Find the terminal temperature rating and confirm which conductor materials and sizes the equipment accepts.
- Confirm the wiring method. Select a conductor or cable assembly approved for that method, rather than choosing by gauge alone.
- Apply the relevant ampacity requirements. Account for ambient temperature, current-carrying conductor count and other conditions, then check the locally adopted code and amendments.
- Evaluate voltage drop. Include the run length and circuit voltage; do not transfer a result from a different set of assumptions.
- Verify before installation. Check equipment instructions and local permit or inspection requirements, and consult a qualified electrician if you cannot establish the applicable sizing rules.
