Soil pH measures how acidic or alkaline the soil water is. It affects which nutrients plants can use, but a pH reading is only one part of soil fertility—not a complete diagnosis of plant health. Test the soil, choose a target for the plant you are growing, and amend only when the results recommend it.
What does soil pH tell you?
The pH scale describes acidity and alkalinity: lower values are more acidic, higher values more alkaline. Soil pH influences nutrient availability, so a plant may struggle to access nutrients even when they are present in the soil. That does not mean every pH problem calls for fertilizer; use the soil test report to interpret pH alongside nutrient results and recommendations.
Virginia Cooperative Extension explains that soil pH measures acidity in soil water and affects nutrient availability. Interpretation depends on the test method and what is being grown.
What should your soil pH be?
There is no single ideal pH for every plant. Penn State Extension gives pH 6.2–6.8 as a range in which many plants do well, but some plants need conditions outside it. Blueberries and rhododendrons, for example, prefer more acidic soil. Check the target for the specific crop or plant rather than treating the general range as a universal requirement.

- Kindly NOTE: This soil tester can not be applied to test pH value of any other liquid. If the soil is too dry the indicator will not move, and water it before testing.
- 3 METERS IN ONE: Soil moisture level, Soil pH value and Sunlight level could be tested easily according to your need by switching the function button of this soil meter.
- NO BATTERY NEEDED: Simply insert the meter into soil, wait few minutes, accurate test results will be displayed on the readout panel. No battery is needed.
- STURDY AND SCIENTIFIC DESIGN: Reliable materials and upgraded technology used for this soil meter make it advanced and high-quality for long-term use.
- MULTIPURPOSE SOIL TEST KIT: Portable and compact design enables you to use this soil meter for house garden, farm, lawn and any other soil & plant analysis. Ideal for indoor and outdoor use.
How do you test soil pH?
Test before applying lime or sulfur. A laboratory soil test can report pH along with nutrient levels and recommendations for lime or fertilizer. Maryland Extension describes soil reports that include pH, nutrients, and fertilizer and lime recommendations. Use a regional Extension soil laboratory or another locally appropriate lab, and identify the plant or crop when submitting the sample.
A home pH kit can be convenient for checking pH, but it is not necessarily equivalent to a lab report that interprets nutrients or calculates a lime requirement. The available guidance does not establish that one type of consumer kit is more accurate than another.

How do you raise soil pH?
Agricultural limestone, or lime, raises acidic soil pH. The amount depends on the current pH, the target for the plant, and the soil’s buffering capacity—the degree to which soil resists a change in pH. A lab recommendation accounts for these factors; avoid choosing a rate from a general rule of thumb.
Lime products also differ. Penn State Extension distinguishes calcitic lime, which is high in calcium and low in magnesium, from dolomitic lime, which supplies magnesium as well as calcium. Follow the soil test recommendation to choose the appropriate type.

Allow time for the change. In Florida guidance, UF/IFAS says incorporated lime may take up to six months to complete its reaction and raise pH to the desired level. That timing applies to the described guidance and should not be assumed for every soil, climate, or application method.
How do you lower soil pH?
Incorporated elemental sulfur can lower soil pH. It works as it oxidizes in the soil, and the response depends on soil conditions, so the needed amount should come from a soil test or local recommendation rather than a one-size-fits-all rate.

- 【4 in 1 function】This is a 4-in-1 multifunctional soil tester. Our soil tester fastly to measure soil moisture, pH, temperature and sunlight to help you take better care of flowers and plants. You can know when you need to water your soil by measuring moisture and pH & Temperature value of the soil and sunlight level of plants with it.
- 【Large Screen & Backlight LCD Display】The Soil Tester uses a large LCD screen and white backlight to conveniently display and read digital parameter in day or dark.Use AAA1.5V * 4 batteries (not included),it will alert when the battery is low.
- 【Quick Accurate measurement】The latest probe detection technology in 2026 can quickly and accurately measure the pH, moisture and temperature in the soil, with the light intensity of the light sensor analysis on the instrument, it can allow you to know when to water, to control the pH and temperature acidity, and determine whether the plants have enough light to better cultivate the plants more scientifically.
- 【Easy to use】Just simply plug the probe into the soil about 4 inches(10cm) , wait 10 seconds to read intuitive data, and you will get an accurate and precise reading immediately.(This soil tester cannot be used directly to test any liquid. When measuring the soil, if the soil is too dry, do not insert it into dry and hard soil. Before testing, please water the soil test area and wait for 10 minutes, otherwise the testing machine will be damaged.)When testing soil pH and moisture, you need to read data from at least 5 locations in the soil. The average value of all the data will be the final soil pH and moisture.
- 【More convenient to read】The screen content adopts visual content design, which helps you read the data through specific values and easy to understand graphics, so that even novice growers can easily understand your soil conditions. The 45° rotating head design allows you to bend your head 0°-45°, allowing you to easily view the screen content without bending over.
Do not substitute sulfate fertilizers for elemental sulfur when the goal is to lower pH: UF/IFAS agronomic guidance says sulfate forms of sulfur do not lower soil pH. Because the adjustment is slow, UMass Extension recommends retesting four to six months after applying elemental sulfur before deciding whether to apply more.

| Approach | Effect | What to check | Timing guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lime | Raises pH | Plant target, current pH, buffering capacity, and whether calcitic or dolomitic lime is recommended | UF/IFAS Florida guidance says incorporated lime may take up to six months; timing varies with conditions. |
| Elemental sulfur | Lowers pH | Plant target and soil-specific recommendation; sulfate fertilizers are not a substitute. | UMass Extension recommends retesting four to six months after application before considering more. |
Recommendations can differ by region, crop, and laboratory method. Use the guidance attached to your own soil test rather than transferring an application rate or timeline from another location.
