Pack supportive footwear, at least the National Park Service’s general minimum of 2 quarts of water per person for a day, a small first-aid kit, a headlamp or flashlight, adjustable layers, and rain and wind protection for Graveyard Fields. Add a trail map, food, phone, and emergency essentials, then check Blue Ridge Parkway weather, road status, and parking conditions before driving to Milepost 418.8.

The easy 1.2-mile Graveyard Fields loop can become a longer, steeper outing when you add a waterfall spur. Mud, deep ruts, uneven ground, slippery rocks, fast weather changes, and crowded parking all affect what belongs in your pack.

Know the route before you choose your gear

Graveyard Fields is reached from the Blue Ridge Parkway overlook at Milepost 418.8 and is managed by Pisgah National Forest. The destination is popular, so a full parking area can change your plan before you reach the trail. Read the current National Park Service Graveyard Fields page before leaving.

Loop only

The NPS describes the main route as a 1.2-mile loop rated easy overall. “Easy” does not mean uniformly smooth: sections can be muddy, deeply rutted, and uneven. For this option, supportive trail shoes, water, a light day pack, and weather layers are usually more practical than heavy expedition equipment.

Loop with a waterfall spur

Waterfall approaches add distance and steep or rocky terrain. The NPS Second Falls page describes a 1.3-mile loop and gives separate spur directions; that 1.3-mile figure refers to the overall loop described on that page, not a promise that every waterfall add-on is included. Treat any spur mileage as additional and allow extra time for descents, climbs, photos, and careful footing.

Because the two NPS pages use different route descriptions and distances, decide which itinerary you are following before you start. Put the map in an accessible pocket, not buried under clothing, and tell someone at home whether you intend to visit a waterfall.

Graveyard Fields packing list

Pack or wear Why it matters here Practical choice
Supportive hiking shoes or boots Mud, ruts, rocks, and uneven surfaces require stable footing; NPS recommends supportive shoes or boots. Choose footwear with a secure fit and tread suited to wet, uneven ground. Boots are not mandatory for the loop, but shoes should feel stable and comfortable.
Water NPS Trail Safety guidance says: “Take adequate water—minimum 2 quarts per person per day.” Carry at least that general minimum, adjusting your plan for heat, exertion, your group, and time outside. Do not assume the trail will supply drinkable water.
Small first-aid kit Useful for blisters, minor cuts, and scrapes on a short hike where help may not be immediate. Include blister care, adhesive bandages, gauze, tape, antiseptic wipes, and any personal medication.
Headlamp or flashlight A delayed return, injury, or changing plans can leave you walking in low light. Bring a working light and check its batteries before departure; a phone flashlight is a backup, not your only plan.
Rain protection Showers can arrive after a sunny start, and wet clothing loses warmth quickly. Pack a waterproof or water-resistant shell that fits over your insulating layer; use a pack cover or liner for spare clothes.
Wind-resistant outer layer Parkway weather can differ from conditions in nearby foothill communities. Use a wind shell or rain jacket that blocks gusts without restricting movement.
Adjustable layers Temperature and wind can change with elevation and exposure. Wear a moisture-managing base layer, add a light insulating layer, and carry a removable outer shell.
Trail map Informal social trails can make navigation confusing. Pick up the available map at the overlook parking area and keep an offline copy or paper backup.
Food and snacks Extra time is common when adding a spur or waiting for safe footing. Pack food you can eat without cooking, plus a little reserve for delays.
Phone and emergency information Useful for navigation and calling for help where service is available. Charge it fully, protect it from rain, and do not rely on reception as your only safety measure.
Sun and insect protection Open sections and changing conditions can still produce sun exposure or insect annoyance. Carry sunscreen, sunglasses, and insect repellent according to the forecast and season.

What to wear on the trail

Footwear: supportive, not necessarily heavy boots

The official recommendation is supportive shoes or boots, not a rule that every visitor must wear ankle-high boots. For the loop, well-fitting hiking shoes can be adequate if they provide support and traction on muddy, rutted ground. Choose boots when they improve your comfort and stability, when you are carrying a heavier load, or when conditions are especially wet and rough.

No footwear guarantees that you will not slip. At waterfalls, mist and algae can make rocks slick even when the rest of the trail feels dry. Keep your steps deliberate, use stable surfaces, and avoid testing traction on exposed edges.

Layers for elevation and wind

Start with a comfortable base layer, carry an insulating layer, and keep rain and wind protection where you can reach it quickly. Avoid cotton as your only layer if the forecast is cool or wet; damp fabric can leave you chilled during a pause. Pack a dry spare layer in a waterproof liner if you are prone to getting wet.

Check the forecast for the higher-elevation Parkway rather than using only a town forecast from lower elevations. The NPS Blue Ridge Parkway weather guidance explains why conditions can change along the route. Recheck it shortly before departure, not just the night before.

Water, food, and personal essentials

How much water to carry

NPS Trail Safety guidance states: “Take adequate water—minimum 2 quarts per person per day.” This is general guidance, not an individualized hydration prescription. Heat, humidity, pace, body size, medical conditions, and time spent on a waterfall spur can change your needs. Carry the minimum as a starting point and bring more when conditions or your group warrant it. Read the full Blue Ridge Parkway Trail Safety guidance.

Use bottles or a reservoir you can drink from while walking. Pack a small reserve rather than planning to refill from an unverified stream. Keep water separate from electronics and spare clothing in case a bottle leaks.

Food and medication

Bring a meal or substantial snacks for the time you expect to be out, plus a little extra for a slow descent or an unplanned wait. Pack prescription medicines in a waterproof container and include any allergy medication or personal emergency items your group may need.

First aid and light

A compact kit should handle blisters, minor cuts, and scrapes. Add a headlamp or flashlight even for a midday start; a wrong turn, injury, or delayed return can extend the hike. Test the light before leaving and carry spare batteries when the outing may run late.

Waterfall safety changes the packing plan

The waterfall sections are where a short outing becomes more technical. Approaches can be steep or rocky, and spray can leave rock coated with slippery mist or algae. The NPS pages advise against climbing on or near waterfall rocks, recommend caution on riverbanks, and warn never to play in the stream above a waterfall. Read the route-specific warnings on the Graveyard Fields page and Second Falls page.

  • Keep both hands available on steep or uneven sections; stow trekking poles or other loose items before scrambling around a viewpoint.
  • Stay on durable surfaces and behind natural or posted boundaries rather than stepping onto wet slabs for a photograph.
  • Do not enter the water above a drop, jump from rocks, or approach an edge that requires a balance test.
  • Carry your rain shell where it can be put on before you are soaked by a shower or spray.
  • Allow a slower pace on the return, when wet footwear and tired legs increase the chance of a misstep.

Navigation and time management

A trail map is available at the overlook parking area. The NPS notes that informal social trails can confuse visitors, so familiarize yourself with the loop before walking away from the trailhead. Mark your intended waterfall spur and turnaround point on the map or in an offline navigation app.

  1. Choose the route. Decide whether you are hiking the 1.2-mile loop alone or adding a waterfall spur. Use the Second Falls page’s 1.3-mile figure only for the loop that page describes; do not treat it as the distance for every spur combination.
  2. Set a time limit. Include time for a careful descent, photos, snack breaks, and the climb back. Turn around while you still have daylight and water in reserve.
  3. Share the plan. Tell a contact your route, vehicle description, and expected return. Update them if you change from the loop to a waterfall.
  4. Keep navigation simple. Follow the established trail, use the map at junctions, and avoid making an informal path into your route.
  5. Reassess conditions. Mud, heavy rain, rising water, or a crowded viewpoint can justify skipping the spur and completing the loop instead.

Parking, road status, and the pre-drive check

Parking may be difficult at busy times. Do not park in restricted roadside areas: the NPS warns that vehicles left in prohibited places risk a steep embankment. If the lot is full, choose another Parkway hike rather than blocking a road or stopping on an unsafe shoulder.

Use the NPS Blue Ridge Parkway Road Status and Closures page before departure. A road-status result can change after you check it; the segment by the overlook was listed as open at one research-time check, but that was only a snapshot. Verify the status again on the day you travel, and look for weather-related changes along your approach.

Pack differently for the loop and the spur

Decision Loop only Loop plus waterfall
Distance planning Plan around the NPS 1.2-mile easy loop. Use the loop distance for your chosen page, then add the spur mileage and return travel.
Footing Expect possible mud, ruts, and uneven ground. Add steep, rocky, wet, and slippery sections near water.
Time A shorter outing, but still allow for navigation and weather delays. Allow extra time for careful movement, viewpoints, and the climb back.
Clothing Carry adjustable layers and rain protection. Keep the shell immediately accessible because spray and exposure can increase discomfort.
Safety margin Keep water, light, and first aid in the pack even for a short walk. Carry the same essentials with more food, water, and daylight margin.

Common packing mistakes and fixes

Relying on a foothill forecast

Problem: You leave in warm sunshine and reach a cooler, windier Parkway overlook. Fix: Check the Parkway-specific forecast and bring a shell plus an insulating layer.

Treating “easy” as “paved”

Problem: Lightweight casual shoes become uncomfortable in ruts and mud. Fix: Wear supportive shoes with a secure fit and pack dry socks.

Bringing too little water because the loop is short

Problem: A waterfall spur, wrong turn, or delay extends the outing. Fix: Start with the NPS minimum guidance and carry enough reserve for your conditions and group.

Using a phone as the only safety tool

Problem: A low battery or poor signal leaves you without light or navigation. Fix: Carry a headlamp or flashlight and a paper or offline map.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Parking wherever space appears

Problem: A roadside spot may be restricted or dangerously close to an embankment. Fix: Park legally or select another hike when the lot is full.

Wearing traction confidence into the waterfall area

Problem: Mist and algae make rocks slick despite good tread. Fix: Slow down, stay off waterfall rocks, and skip the approach if safe footing is not available.

A simple final check before you leave the car

  1. Put on the shoes you intend to hike in and verify that laces, socks, and fit are comfortable.
  2. Fill and secure your water containers; confirm the light turns on.
  3. Place the map, rain shell, first aid, and phone where you can reach them without unpacking everything.
  4. Check the sky and wind at the overlook, not only the forecast you saw at home.
  5. Identify the legal parking area, the loop direction, and the point where you will decide whether to add the waterfall spur.
  6. Start only if the road, weather, daylight, and group condition support the plan.
