Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with the job you need the battery to do: keep selected circuits running during an outage, store solar electricity for use later, reduce electricity costs under your utility’s rate plan, or combine those goals. Then compare written, installed proposals against the same requirements for capacity, power, backup coverage, compatibility, costs, warranty, and local approvals. A battery’s advertised capacity alone cannot tell you whether it will run your home or make financial sense.
Decide what you need the battery to do
Home batteries are often proposed for three different purposes. They can be configured to support more than one, but a quote should say which functions it includes and what equipment and installation work are needed to provide them.
- Outage backup: The battery supplies selected household loads when grid power is unavailable. Ask which circuits will remain powered and what can operate at the same time.
- Solar shifting: The battery stores some electricity generated by rooftop solar so it can be used later, such as after sunset. Storage does not produce additional energy, and some energy is lost as electricity is converted into and retrieved from storage.
- Bill management: The battery may help shift when you draw electricity from the grid under a time-based rate or demand-charge tariff. Whether that is valuable depends on your utility’s tariff, export compensation, and the system’s operation.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) identifies outage backup, using solar after sunset, and utility rate arrangements as relevant considerations. Ask the installer to explain the proposed operating strategy in terms of your actual goal, rather than relying on a general claim that a system can “save money” or “power the home.”
Compare energy capacity and power separately
Energy capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), describes how much electricity a battery can store. Power, measured in kilowatts (kW), describes how much electricity it can deliver at a particular time. A system can have enough stored energy for a long period but still be unable to run several high-demand appliances together if its power output is too low.

For every proposal, ask for the usable capacity and the continuous and surge power ratings of the complete proposed configuration. Have the installer identify which figures apply after any equipment or configuration limits, not just the headline specification of a battery component. Then compare those figures with the loads and runtime you actually want to cover. DOE explains the distinction between storage capacity and power in its guidance on solar energy storage.
For backup, give the installer a list of priority loads and ask for an estimate of which can run simultaneously and for how long under the assumptions stated in the quote. For solar shifting or bill management, ask how much energy the system is expected to store and return under the proposed operating settings. Do not treat stored energy as fully recoverable: conversion and retrieval losses affect the electricity available for use.
Use one scorecard for every proposal
Ask each installer to fill out the same comparison points in writing. If a proposal omits an item, request clarification rather than assuming it is included.

| What to compare | What the proposal should specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity and power | Usable capacity in kWh; continuous and surge power in kW; the complete configuration those figures describe | These determine how much energy can be stored and which loads can draw power at once. |
| Backup coverage | Backed-up circuits, loads that can run simultaneously, and estimated runtime for your stated priorities | A battery proposal does not by itself establish that the whole home will have backup. |
| Solar and electrical compatibility | Compatibility with your existing or planned inverter and electrical system; any panel or other electrical work; grid-interconnection arrangements | The installer and utility need to confirm how the proposed equipment will work with the home and grid. |
| Operating value | Assumptions for storage and retrieval losses, local electricity rates, export compensation, and any demand charges | Savings depend on the tariff and operating assumptions, not capacity alone. |
| Installation and approvals | Permits, inspections, utility approvals, electrical work, commissioning, and who is responsible for each | Clarifies the full project scope and who will see it through. |
| Warranty and service | Warranty duration and its terms for throughput or cycles, retained capacity, labor, replacement, monitoring, support, and transferability | Warranty coverage varies; the actual written terms matter more than a general warranty claim. |
| Total cost and incentives | A written installed price, included and excluded work, and any incentive assumptions tied to your address and installation date | Lets you compare the full proposed project and avoid treating unverified incentives as guaranteed savings. |
Use your electricity bills and the assumptions in each quote when evaluating operating value. Generic payback promises are not a substitute for a calculation based on your tariff, solar export compensation, expected system operation, and installed cost.

“Backup for the home” is not a complete description of what a system will do in an outage. The proposal should identify the circuits or loads included, explain what can operate at the same time, and estimate runtime for your stated priorities. The actual result depends on the selected system and how it is installed.
Before comparing quotes, decide which loads matter most to your household and share that list with each installer. Ask the installer to show how the proposed power output and usable energy relate to those loads, and to state the assumptions behind its runtime estimate. If two proposals cover different circuits or use different assumptions, their estimated runtimes are not directly comparable.

Verify solar, electrical, and utility compatibility
Ask the installer to document how the proposed battery will connect to your existing or planned solar and electrical equipment, including the inverter and any required electrical work. Also ask how the system will interact with the grid and what metering or interconnection arrangements apply. Broad guidance cannot certify compatibility for an individual battery, inverter, home, or utility; those details need confirmation for your installation.
Involve the utility early. DOE recommends doing so because metering arrangements and possible incentives vary by location. Ask who will handle the utility application and approvals, what information the utility requires, and whether the quoted project includes that work.

Review the full installed scope and local requirements
Compare complete installed proposals rather than equipment prices alone. Ask who will install and commission the system, who will obtain permits and arrange inspections, and who is responsible for utility interconnection approval. The quote should also describe required electrical work and the equipment and services included.

Building, electrical, and fire-code requirements depend on the location and installation. Have the qualified installer and the relevant local authority confirm applicable requirements, including any placement instructions or clearances, before work begins. Get those instructions in writing. DOE’s homebuilder guidance advises reviewing local codes and involving the utility early; its solar installation guidance also points buyers toward qualified professionals rather than untrained construction workers for installation work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Read the warranty and service terms, not just the headline
There is no single standard warranty term established for all home battery systems. Read the warranty for the specific equipment and installation in your proposal, and ask the seller or installer to explain any terms you cannot interpret. Check whether it states limits or conditions for throughput or cycles, retained capacity, labor, replacement, monitoring and technical support, and whether coverage transfers to a later homeowner.
Ask who you contact if the system stops working and whether the proposal includes ongoing monitoring or service. A warranty that covers equipment but not other project costs may not mean the same thing as one that includes labor or replacement work, so compare the written coverage rather than the warranty label.

Verify incentives before using them in the budget
Do not include an incentive in your expected net cost until you have confirmed that it applies to your address, equipment, and installation date with a current official source. Check IRS information as well as state, local, and utility programs, and confirm the rules before signing.
The ENERGY STAR Residential Clean Energy Tax Credit page reviewed for this guide describes a 30% credit for qualifying property placed in service after December 31, 2021, and before January 1, 2026. It also states a minimum battery capacity of 3 kWh. That published service window has passed as of October 4, 2026, so the page does not establish federal credit eligibility for a system placed in service during 2026. No current IRS guidance confirming replacement or extended federal eligibility is cited here. Treat any 2026 federal-credit claim as unverified unless current IRS guidance confirms it.
Make the final comparison on written, local details
Once proposals use the same goals and assumptions, compare the full installed scope, backup design, electrical compatibility, operating assumptions, warranty, and verified costs. Ask the installer to revise or explain any quote that leaves a key point unclear, especially what the system can power, what approvals and work are included, or how a claimed saving or incentive was calculated. General guidance cannot determine the right system size, local price, tariff economics, or code requirements for a particular home; those depend on the household, utility, equipment, and jurisdiction.
