Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe right construction labor management app connects field time to payroll and project financials. It should capture each worker’s hours, attach them to the correct job and cost code, apply pay rules, route exceptions for approval, and deliver reliable labor data to payroll, accounting, and job-cost reports. Evaluate those complete workflows with your own projects and payroll scenarios—not by counting feature names.
Start with the labor workflow, not the feature list
Construction labor software is valuable only when data survives the trip from a jobsite to the back office without losing context. A punch that records “eight hours” but omits the project, phase, cost code, or pay type can produce a correct-looking paycheck and an unusable job-cost report.

Map your current process before booking demonstrations. Identify who records time, who corrects it, who approves it, how payroll receives it, and where labor costs are reported. Then ask every vendor to demonstrate the same path:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- A worker clocks in at a real jobsite.
- The worker changes jobs, phases, tasks, or pay types during the day.
- A punch is missed or entered incorrectly.
- A supervisor reviews and approves the correction.
- Payroll applies overtime, deductions, taxes, benefits, union rules, or prevailing-wage requirements.
- Approved allocations reach the accounting or ERP system.
- The project manager sees labor cost against the correct job and cost code.
If an app cannot show this chain with your terminology and sample data, an impressive feature page will not compensate for the gap.

Time capture that matches how crews actually work
Provide more than one clock-in method
Construction teams may work at a fixed site, move between locations, share devices, or spend part of the day away from a desk. Look for a combination of mobile entry, supervisor entry, and a tablet or kiosk option when a shared device is more practical than individual phones. Workyard, for example, describes mobile, tablet, and kiosk clock-in experiences; that does not establish compatibility with a particular tablet model.
Before purchasing shared hardware, confirm the vendor’s supported operating systems and kiosk mode, your policy for shared credentials, power and mounting arrangements, connectivity at each site, and who supports the device when it fails. A kiosk is useful only if the site can keep it available and workers can identify themselves accurately.
Test location controls without assuming they solve attendance
Geofencing and GPS can help verify that a punch was made near the assigned site. They should be configurable for your operating model rather than treated as an automatic fraud solution. Ask whether a worker can be assigned to several nearby sites, how location exceptions are presented, and what happens when a supervisor must correct a legitimate out-of-area punch.
Recommended Free Tools
Make job context mandatory where it matters
Every time entry should be associated with the fields your estimators and project accountants use: job, phase or cost code, task, and pay type. Decide which fields are required at clock-in, which can be selected when work changes, and which are added by a supervisor. Miter describes approved allocations carrying job, cost code, and pay type through payroll and ERP workflows; use that as a test case, not as proof that every configuration will fit your chart of accounts.
Design for corrections and exceptions
Missed punches, double punches, early departures, job transfers, and incorrect cost codes are normal events. The app should let a worker explain a correction, let a manager approve or reject it, and preserve an audit history showing who changed what and when. Ask to see notifications, escalation rules, approval cutoffs, and the treatment of an unapproved timesheet at payroll close.
Also ask about connectivity and offline behavior. The available product descriptions do not establish how each system records time without a connection, when it synchronizes, or how conflicts are resolved. Require a live demonstration at a site with weak service or obtain the behavior in writing.

Payroll, prevailing wage, and union rules
Separate feature labels from legal coverage
Public work and union projects can require far more than ordinary hourly payroll. ADP and Sage describe certified-payroll and labor-compliance capabilities, while ADP also highlights union requirements and reporting. Those statements do not prove coverage for every state, locality, agency form, wage determination, or contract.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Give the vendor a representative contract and ask which rules are configured by the employer, which are supplied as maintained content, and which require manual review. Have payroll or compliance staff verify the result before relying on it.
Verify the rules that change your gross pay
- Overtime thresholds and daily versus weekly calculations.
- Meal and rest break premiums or penalties.
- Prevailing-wage rates, fringe benefits, and certified-payroll output.
- Union wage schedules, benefit contributions, classifications, and work assignments.
- Multiple states or local tax jurisdictions.
- Deductions, reimbursements, travel time, and per-diem treatment.
- Pay-period cutoffs, retroactive rate changes, and approval locks.
Ask for the exact report format your agency, general contractor, union, or auditor accepts. “Supports compliance” is not a substitute for an approved filing or a tested payroll calculation.
Scheduling and workforce operations
Match people to work, qualifications, and availability
A labor app should help managers assign crews based on job needs, skills, licenses, and credentials—not simply place names on a calendar. Confirm whether a scheduler can see availability, identify expired credentials, account for multiple jobs in one day, and notify workers when an assignment changes.
Give workers a usable self-service experience
Workers may need to see assignments, acknowledge changes, request time off, review hours, or respond to a correction request from a phone or shared device. Check language options, accessibility, notification methods, and whether a worker can use the app without exposing another employee’s information on a shared kiosk.
Keep HR scope distinct from timekeeping
If you need onboarding, employee records, benefits administration, recruiting, or credential management, assess those modules separately. A strong clock and payroll workflow does not automatically mean the product is a complete human-resources system.

Integrations that preserve labor-cost accuracy
Define the systems of record first
Write down which system owns employees, jobs, cost codes, pay rates, payroll, accounting, and project management. Then identify the direction of every data flow. A native integration, a partner connector, and a custom export have different implementation and support risks.
Trace the full data set
During a demonstration, follow these fields from entry to report:
- Employee identity and classification.
- Job, phase, task, and cost code.
- Regular, overtime, double-time, holiday, or other pay type.
- Base rate, premiums, fringe benefits, taxes, and deductions.
- Approval status, correction history, and pay-period date.
- Fully burdened labor cost in the job-cost report.
Ask how the system handles a changed cost code, a duplicate employee, a deleted job, a rejected payroll batch, or a rate corrected after approval. Miter positions its product around field data flowing to payroll and ERP workflows; Sage describes accounting integrations. Treat both as prompts for verification with your own systems, not as an independent interoperability guarantee.

Clarify error ownership
Find out whether failed records appear in a queue, who receives the alert, whether a correction can be re-sent safely, and how duplicate records are prevented. A manual spreadsheet workaround may hide errors until month-end and undermine the app’s job-cost purpose.
Field usability, devices, and connectivity
Have actual crew members test the app, not only administrators. A useful pilot should cover a first-time user, a bilingual crew, a supervisor approving from a phone, and a worker moving between two jobs. Measure how many taps are required, whether the correct job appears first, and whether workers can recover from a mistaken selection.
Confirm:
- Supported mobile operating systems and minimum versions.
- Device-management requirements for company phones or shared tablets.
- Offline entry, synchronization timing, and conflict handling.
- GPS, battery, and data-use implications.
- Language, accessibility, and notification settings.
- Data retention, export, deletion, and access controls.
- Support hours and escalation during payroll close.
The product descriptions available for this comparison do not establish universal offline support, operating-system coverage, security certifications, or retention terms. Obtain those details from each vendor’s current contract and technical documentation.

Implementation and total cost
Comparable current pricing was not established for the products described here, so request a quote using your actual employee count, number of jobsites, payroll frequency, jurisdictions, union complexity, integrations, and expected support needs. A per-user figure alone can conceal important costs.
Include these items in the total-cost model:
- Implementation and data migration.
- Integration setup, maintenance, and custom work.
- Shared tablets, mounts, chargers, or connectivity plans.
- Training for workers, supervisors, payroll, and accounting.
- Premium support, additional environments, and reporting.
- Internal administration and ongoing rule maintenance.
Ask for a written implementation plan with milestones: configuration, employee and job import, payroll mapping, pilot, parallel payroll, acceptance testing, and go-live support. Run at least one pay period in parallel when the labor data is financially material.

| Field fit | Does it work for your devices, languages, accessibility needs, and connectivity? | Hands-on pilot at a representative site |
| Implementation and cost | Are deployment effort, support, hardware, and recurring charges understood? | Written scope, timeline, service terms, and quote |
Run a scripted vendor demonstration
Give every finalist the same scenario and prohibit a slide-only presentation. Include a worker assigned to two projects, a job transfer at midday, a prevailing-wage or union classification where applicable, a missed punch, a supervisor correction, and a payroll export. Require the vendor to show the audit trail and the resulting job-cost report.
- Import or create the employee, job, phase, cost code, rate, and classification.
- Clock in using the intended field method.
- Transfer to another job or cost code.
- Enter a missed punch and a reason.
- Approve or reject the correction as a supervisor.
- Apply your overtime, break, union, or prevailing-wage rule.
- Lock the pay period and produce payroll output.
- Send the allocation to the accounting or ERP workflow.
- Open the job-cost report and verify regular, premium, and burdened labor.
- Intentionally create an invalid or duplicate record and observe recovery.
Record what required configuration, manual intervention, or vendor support. A workflow that works only with a consultant present may be unsuitable for routine operations.

Assuming compliance from a badge
Certified payroll, prevailing wage, and union support vary by jurisdiction and contract. Verify the exact forms, rates, classifications, benefits, and update responsibilities.
Ignoring exception volume
Even accurate workers make mistakes. If correction queues, approvals, and audit history are awkward, payroll staff will revert to spreadsheets and email.
Buying hardware before confirming the software
Shared tablets and kiosks can fit some sites, but device support, power, connectivity, user identification, and kiosk security must be confirmed first.

Make the final decision
Select the app that produces the most trustworthy labor record with the least daily friction for your crews and payroll team. Require written answers for unresolved items, especially jurisdiction-specific compliance, offline behavior, supported devices, data retention, security, integration ownership, and support during payroll close.
Before signing, define measurable acceptance criteria: percentage of punches carrying valid job and cost codes, correction turnaround, payroll export accuracy, job-cost reconciliation, schedule-notification delivery, and response time for critical support issues. Re-test those criteria after implementation and whenever a major configuration or integration changes.
