Stop the task, make the machine and surrounding area safe, and follow the operator’s manual and your site procedure. Then call the rental provider for model-specific charging or recovery instructions. Do not connect an arbitrary charger, outlet, jump-start, or bypass. The correct response depends on the machine model, battery, approved charger, available site power, and whether anyone is in danger.
If an operator is elevated, trapped, or otherwise exposed to immediate risk, activate the site emergency and rescue plan first and summon qualified assistance. Do not improvise a recovery manoeuvre simply because the battery is low.

Immediate response when the battery is empty
- Pause the work. Stop attachments and travel, lower loads only if the operator’s manual and site procedure allow it, apply the parking brake, and isolate the work area from vehicles, pedestrians and falling-object hazards. Do not push, tow, roll or otherwise move a depleted machine unless the manual, rental provider or a competent recovery person authorizes that method.
- Check people before equipment. If somebody is at height, pinned, in a traffic lane, near an excavation or exposed to another hazard, use the site emergency/rescue procedure and contact qualified assistance. For a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), the rescue plan takes priority over charging. The appropriate sequence varies by machine and site; there is no universal battery-depletion rescue procedure.
- Read the machine’s instructions. Use the operator’s manual, decals and site rules to identify the approved shutdown, isolation and charging steps. Record any warning, fault code, battery percentage, audible alarm or loss of function before switching anything off that the manual says should remain on.
- Call the rental provider. Give the machine make and model or asset number, exact site location, displayed state of charge or fault, what functions still operate, and whether anyone is in an unsafe position. Ask for the manufacturer-based charging or recovery procedure and whether the provider can dispatch a technician, supply charging support or arrange replacement equipment.
- Confirm commercial terms. Ask who supplies the charger or power system, whether a call-out or delivery fee applies, how downtime is handled, and what the rental agreement says about damage, delay and replacement.
If the battery, cable, connector, charger or electrical supply looks damaged, wet, overheated, contaminated or otherwise unsafe, keep it out of service. UK Health and Safety Executive guidance says unsafe work equipment should be removed from use and checked by a competent person; its detailed electrical advice is UK guidance and must be applied alongside the requirements in your own jurisdiction.

- Battery and charger condition, including visible damage, heat, smell, liquid, damaged pins or a tripped supply.
- Whether anyone is elevated, trapped, injured or in a location that requires immediate rescue.
- The next planned use, shift deadline and whether another machine can cover the task.
Ask the provider to confirm the exact charger type, connector, input voltage and current, permitted power source, charging location, isolation requirements and expected charging time for that model. Also ask whether on-site mobile charging, a spare battery, a technician or replacement unit is available. Availability, response times and fees cannot be assumed from one rental company or contract to another.
Why a regular outlet or spare charger may be unsafe
A plug that fits is not proof of compatibility. Safe charging requires agreement between the machine’s battery-management system, the charger’s output, the connector and the electrical supply. The manual or provider must establish all of these points:
- Input: the voltage, frequency, phase, current and earthing arrangement the charger accepts.
- Output: the charger’s voltage, current, charging profile and communication with the battery-management system.
- Connector: the correct plug, pin arrangement, interlock and cable rating.
- Battery: the chemistry, capacity, temperature limits and any lockout caused by a fault or deep discharge.
- Machine instructions: where to park, isolate, ventilate, protect from weather and place warning signs while charging.
Do not jump-start an electric machine, bridge a battery-management system, substitute a generic charger, use an extension arrangement that the manual forbids, or energize a damaged lead. IPAF’s Toolbox Talk The Safe Use of Charging Leads states: “Charging batteries on electrified Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) should be carried out in line with the manufacturer’s instructions, which can be found in the operators’ manual.” IPAF warns that incorrect charging can increase fire or explosion risk.

Charging approaches available on a jobsite
United Rentals’ charging guide, published January 7, 2025, describes several approaches. Its figures are guide-level estimates, not a promise for a particular rental unit.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
| Approach | What the guide describes | Use only after confirming |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1, 120 V | Smaller equipment may charge overnight from a 120-volt supply. | The machine’s approved onboard or external charger, circuit capacity and site electrical rules. |
| Level 2, 220/240 V | Most battery-electric construction equipment can reach a full charge in roughly 5–10 hours. | Required voltage, current, connector, charger rating and whether the shift leaves enough time. |
| Level 2 or Level 3 opportunity charging | A brief top-up may take about 10–30 minutes, depending on equipment and battery acceptance. | Whether the battery and charger permit partial charging and whether the provider approves the location and sequence. |
| Level 3 DC fast charging | High-power DC charging is presented as an option for compatible equipment when rapid turnaround is needed. | Exact DC voltage, maximum battery input, cooling requirements and a suitable supply. |
| Mobile DC charging | A mobile charging unit can be brought to a machine where fixed power is inadequate or unavailable. | Provider availability, access for the charging vehicle, placement, cable reach, grounding and contract cost. |
| Standalone battery system | A separate battery can supply charging power without a direct grid connection. | Output compatibility, capacity, weather protection, lifting and transport arrangements, and provider approval. |
The machine charges no faster than the rate its battery accepts. A high-output charger therefore does not guarantee a faster charge if the battery-management system limits input. Conversely, a low-capacity charger can extend the wait even when the battery could accept more.
Choose a recovery or charging option by five checks
1. Match the machine and charger
Start with the asset number and manual, not the outlet nearest the work area. The rental provider should identify the approved charger and lead, confirm whether the charger is onboard or external, and state any battery-temperature or fault reset requirements.
2. Confirm site power
Establish whether the supply is grid-connected, its voltage and current, the circuit’s available capacity, and whether the distribution board, residual-current protection and earthing are suitable. A generator, temporary board or long cable run may change the permitted charging arrangement.

If the machine is needed again in an hour, a normal full charge may not fit the schedule. Ask whether an approved opportunity charge, a mobile unit or replacement equipment is the safer way to protect production.

4. Check the charging hardware and logistics
Find out whether an onboard charger, mobile charger or standalone battery is available, where it can be positioned, how it will be protected from traffic and weather, and who is authorized to connect it.
5. Confirm support and cost
Get the provider’s dispatch estimate, delivery or call-out charges, replacement terms and responsibility for supervision in writing or in the rental record. There is no universal ranking of grid, mobile or standalone charging; the best choice is the one compatible with the machine and safe for the site’s schedule and power system.
How long will the machine run?
United Rentals’ 2025 guide says equipment manufacturers typically estimate about 4–6 hours of daily use. That is an attributed typical estimate, not guaranteed operating time. Heavy-duty applications, high travel or lifting demand, cab heating or cooling and cold ambient temperatures can discharge a battery faster.
An electric machine may show fewer active operating hours in an eight-hour shift because it does not idle like a diesel machine. Treat breaks, crew changes and shift boundaries as charging opportunities when the manual permits. Record the state of charge at the start and end of each task, and tell the provider when the machine’s actual runtime differs sharply from the expected pattern.

Plan the next shift
- Assign a charging location before the machine arrives, with barriers against traffic and unauthorized access.
- Schedule charging during breaks or between shifts rather than waiting for a complete shutdown.
- Allow for lower performance in cold weather and for energy used by heating, cooling, lighting and auxiliary systems.
- Keep a contingency plan: another compatible machine, a provider contact and a documented rescue arrangement for MEWPs.
Model-specific behavior cannot be generalized
Manitou MEWP reserve mode
Manitou describes a reserve mode on certain MEWPs that can release residual power for basic movement to a charging point or transport truck. Its instructions require a specific access code and limit activation to authorized emergency use. This is not permission to move any depleted MEWP. Ask the rental provider whether the exact asset has the feature, who may activate it and what route or load restrictions apply.
Volvo CE electric construction vehicles
Volvo CE’s FAQ discusses topping up electric construction vehicles during breaks and charging from a mid-level state rather than draining the battery completely. That is Volvo’s manufacturer-specific advice, not a universal rule for every rental battery or chemistry. Follow the instructions for the machine in front of you.
MEWP emergency and battery controls
For elevated equipment, the site rescue plan should identify how to reach an operator after loss of drive power, who controls the ground controls, how emergency services are contacted and how the area is isolated. IPAF’s battery guidance covers safe use, charging, storage, inspection, maintenance and disposal across battery types. Use it as supplementary safety guidance, while the machine manual and local regulations remain controlling for the asset and site.
Before charging, inspect the equipment and supply for damage and confirm that users are trained. HSE guidance emphasizes risk assessment, checking that equipment and electrical supply are suitable and in good condition, and ensuring competent use. Stop charging immediately if there is smoke, unusual heat, a strong odour, arcing or a fault indication; evacuate or call emergency services according to the site plan rather than opening or repairing the battery yourself.

Troubleshooting without improvising
The machine will not accept charge
Keep it isolated and photograph the display and connector without touching damaged parts. The provider may need to clear a fault, check an interlock or dispatch a technician. Do not repeatedly unplug and reconnect a faulted system unless the manual specifically directs that action.
There is no suitable power at the work area
Do not run an unapproved lead from a distant outlet. Ask about an approved charging point, mobile DC unit, standalone battery or replacement machine, and have the provider confirm transport and grounding arrangements.
The battery or cable is damaged or hot
Stop use, keep people clear, follow the site’s electrical and fire procedure, and obtain competent inspection. Do not cool, open, tape, splice or otherwise repair a high-voltage battery or charging lead in the field.
An operator is stranded at height
Activate the documented rescue procedure and call qualified assistance. Charging is not the first intervention, and a depleted battery does not justify bypassing interlocks or moving the platform without authorization.
Quick Recap
Prevention checklist for supervisors
- At handover, record the machine identity, battery state, charger, connector and provider emergency number.
- Read the charging section of the operator’s manual with the assigned operator.
- Verify the planned charging location, supply rating, weather protection, barriers and fire response arrangements.
- Include battery state and charging breaks in the daily briefing and lift-plan or traffic-management review where relevant.
- Check actual runtime against the work sequence, especially for cold weather, heating, cooling and heavy-duty cycles.
- Keep the MEWP rescue plan current and ensure ground personnel know their role.
- Report recurring short runtime, unexplained faults or damaged leads before the next shift rather than accepting a marginal machine.
