1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFollow the detour signs and any access restrictions, drive carefully on residential streets, and report specific hazards or access problems to the project contact or transportation agency responsible for the work. If the traffic problem continues, ask that agency whether it can review conditions on the affected streets. Detour rules and reporting channels vary by location, so the signs and project notice for the worksite are the starting point.
It helps to separate an immediate project problem—such as an unclear sign or blocked driveway—from a longer-term neighborhood traffic concern. The first calls for a specific report to the project or road agency; the second may require a traffic-data review or local traffic-management process. Neither guarantees a route change, but clear details help the responsible authority understand what is happening.

Follow the signed route, even when it is inconvenient
A roadwork detour is a traffic-control plan, not a suggestion to find the shortest way around a closure. Follow temporary signs, directional instructions, and restrictions such as “local access.” Do not drive past a closure or improvise a shortcut that conflicts with the posted route. Living nearby does not automatically create an exception to a restriction.
Drivers whose destination is within a work zone may be treated differently from drivers passing through it. Wisconsin DOT distinguishes local traffic by destination and advises minimizing local trips through the work zone when access is necessary. Check the instructions for the specific project and use its designated route; do not assume that the Wisconsin guidance establishes a rule for every state or city. That distinction is practical: a resident, customer, or delivery driver who needs to reach a destination inside the affected area may have a permitted route, while a driver merely cutting through may be considered through traffic. The exact definitions and restrictions depend on the project. A “local access” sign does not mean every nearby street is open to every driver, and a familiar route is not necessarily the route approved for the work zone.
Before setting out, read the detour signs and any project notice rather than relying on an old map, memory, or another driver’s route. If signs give different instructions at successive points, do not guess which restriction to ignore. Contact the listed project representative or road agency and explain where the instructions conflict. The agency can clarify the intended route or assess a sign that appears missing or confusing.
When you need access to a home or business
Look for signs or project notices explaining how residents, customers, deliveries, or other local traffic should reach the area. If the route is unclear, contact the project representative listed on a sign or notice before entering a restricted street. Access arrangements depend on the worksite and local plan.

That is Seattle-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every driveway or business will remain reachable throughout every project. The same manual calls for maintaining access for emergency vehicles, fire hydrants, and alarm boxes along a closed route. Those are Seattle manual provisions, not a universal promise that every street will have the same arrangements. Seattle Department of Transportation’s Traffic Control Manual
If a driveway is blocked or the posted route does not appear to provide access to a destination, give the project contact the exact address or location and describe the barrier. Ask what access route is intended and whether the condition can be checked. Do not move a barrier or enter a closed segment on the assumption that access must be allowed; the agency or project team needs to clarify what is safe and authorized for that site.
Drive as though the street is still a neighborhood street
Detoured traffic can bring unfamiliar drivers and larger vehicles onto streets where people walk, cycle, park, and reach their homes. Reduce speed, leave room for people crossing or cycling, and be alert at intersections, driveways, and parked cars. Avoid following another driver through a restriction simply because that driver appears to know the area.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Watch especially for people stepping out from between parked vehicles, cyclists approaching an intersection, and vehicles turning into or out of driveways. Residential streets may have limited sight lines and activity close to the roadway; unfamiliar traffic should not treat them as a faster substitute for the signed route. If you are driving a delivery or service vehicle, use the project’s access instructions rather than assuming that a larger vehicle can safely use every neighborhood street.

A Portland Bureau of Transportation FAQ for the 2021 SW Capitol Highway project explained that exceptions to its directional detour could create collision risks involving opposing traffic, buses, trucks, and work vehicles. That example concerned one project and does not describe an active route today, but it illustrates why making up an alternate access path can be dangerous. Portland’s SW Capitol Highway Detour FAQ
For residents, a useful immediate response is to note the location and conditions that seem unsafe—not to confront drivers or attempt to direct traffic yourself. If you observe repeated near-conflicts, speeding, or pedestrians having difficulty crossing, record the street, time, and direction of travel for the report. A specific, factual description is more useful to an agency than a general characterization of the street as dangerous.
Report a hazard or an access problem with useful details
For an unsafe condition, confusing sign, blocked driveway, or other immediate project-related problem, use the phone number or contact listed on the project signs or notice. If no project contact is available, report the issue to the transportation or public works agency responsible for the road. In New York City, NYC DOT directs construction hazard reports to NYC311; other places have their own reporting systems and agency contacts. NYC DOT also says project signs in most cases provide construction duration and contact details, so check nearby signs and notices before searching for a reporting route. - What happened: for example, a sign that is missing or hard to understand, recurring speeding, a near-conflict with a pedestrian or cyclist, a blocked driveway, or an emergency-access concern.
- Whether the issue happened once or keeps recurring, and any relevant pattern, such as particular times or conditions.
Describe what you saw rather than relying only on a general statement that traffic is bad. For example, say that vehicles repeatedly turned the wrong way at a named intersection, or that a driveway at a specific location was blocked at a given time. If the concern involves a sidewalk or roadway construction site that is hazardous or unsightly, ask the local agency which channel handles that report; NYC’s example uses NYC311 for construction hazards, but other cities may route reports differently.

If there is an immediate emergency, use the appropriate emergency service rather than treating a routine project-reporting channel as an emergency line. For a non-emergency project concern, keep the report focused on observable conditions and ask whether it has been sent to the project team or road authority. Do not assume that the first report automatically changes the detour; reporting records the condition and gives the responsible agency a chance to evaluate it.
Ask for a review if neighborhood impacts persist
If the detour continues to create a recurring traffic or safety concern, ask the responsible transportation agency whether it can evaluate the detour or neighborhood conditions. A request for review is not a promise that the route will change: the process, eligibility, and possible responses depend on the road owner and local program.
It can help to distinguish a problem with how the work zone is signed or operated from a broader concern about traffic on a neighborhood street. A missing sign, confusing directional instruction, or loss of access is a project-specific issue to report promptly to the contact on the notice. Persistent speeding, recurring pedestrian conflicts, or traffic repeatedly using a local street as a cut-through may be better framed as a neighborhood traffic concern for the agency’s review process. Some concerns may involve both, so report the immediate condition first and ask where to direct the continuing concern.
What an agency review may involve
Some local programs collect and evaluate traffic data before deciding whether a response is warranted. Raleigh’s Neighborhood Traffic Management program describes that approach. In Virginia, VDOT’s guide describes a resident- or community-initiated traffic-calming request for VDOT-maintained neighborhood roads, developed with local county or town staff. These are examples of local processes, not a single nationwide procedure.
When making a request, identify the streets affected, the times or conditions when the problem occurs, and the specific impacts you have observed. Ask which agency owns or maintains the road and what information it needs to consider a review. A city, county, state transportation department, and project contractor may have different responsibilities, so verifying the road authority helps route the request correctly. City of Raleigh Neighborhood Traffic Management · VDOT Traffic Calming Guide for Neighborhood Streets
Keep the information concrete and consistent: locations, dates, times, directions, recurring speeds or near-conflicts, pedestrian or cyclist concerns, blocked access, and emergency-access concerns. If the issue is intermittent, explain when it tends to happen rather than presenting one observation as constant. The sources do not establish a universal amount of data residents must collect or a standard response time; follow the local program’s requirements and ask what evidence it uses.

When you contact the agency, ask what the next step is: whether it will review the project’s detour, evaluate neighborhood traffic data, or refer the concern to another road owner. Local programs may have eligibility rules or require participation by residents, community associations, or local staff. A request may lead to further assessment rather than an immediate physical change.

Why a quick traffic-calming fix may not be simple
Speed-management or traffic-calming measures require agency assessment. A change that slows or redirects vehicles on one street can affect emergency response or shift traffic to nearby streets. The Federal Highway Administration’s traffic-calming guidance discusses documenting conditions, considering emergency response, and involving affected property owners; its community guide also notes potential effects on nearby streets and emergency access.
That is why a proposed solution should be considered across the affected area, not only at one location. Relevant questions include whether pedestrians and cyclists are safer, whether residents and businesses can still reach their destinations, whether emergency vehicles can get through, whether the detour is understandable, and whether traffic would simply move to another neighborhood street. FHWA Module 2: Traffic Calming Basics · FHWA A Resident’s Guide for Creating Safer Communities
A treatment that appears helpful at one block could create a different issue nearby, so agencies consider the broader street network and emergency access rather than only the location named in a complaint. Residents can make the review more useful by identifying both the affected block and any nearby streets onto which traffic appears to be shifting. The agency—not an individual resident—must assess whether a proposed measure fits the road and the wider area.
Do not put traffic-control equipment in the roadway yourself
Do not install or move signs, cones, barriers, or traffic-calming devices on a public street to redirect drivers. Traffic-control planning and roadway measures belong in the responsible agency’s or project’s process. Report the location and concern so the project team or road authority can assess it and determine whether an authorized change is needed.
Even a well-intentioned homemade direction can conflict with the signed detour, confuse drivers, or create a new hazard. The reviewed guidance supports reporting conditions and asking the responsible authority to assess them; it does not recommend residents deploy traffic-control equipment. Use official reporting channels rather than trying to enforce restrictions or design a substitute route yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I report a roadwork detour that is sending traffic onto neighborhood streets?
Use the contact listed on the project sign or notice for a project-specific hazard, unclear sign, or access problem. If no project contact is available, report it to the transportation or public works agency responsible for the road. Give the exact street or intersection, date and time, direction of travel, and what happened. Reporting channels vary by location; NYC DOT, for example, directs construction hazard reports to NYC311.
What should I do if I cannot tell whether I am allowed to enter a street marked for local access?
Do not assume that living nearby creates an exception or drive past a restriction to find out. Check the project notice and signs, then contact the project representative or responsible agency to ask which route is intended for your destination. Local-access rules depend on the specific worksite.
How can I find out when construction work will be completed?
Check the project signs or notice for duration information and contact details. NYC DOT says project signs provide duration and contact details in most cases. If the information is not posted or is unclear, contact the project representative or responsible transportation agency; dates and reporting routes are project- and location-specific.
What if traffic problems continue after I report them?
Ask the local transportation agency whether it can review the detour or neighborhood traffic conditions and what information it needs. Some programs collect and evaluate traffic data; procedures and eligibility differ by locality. Include recurring times, locations, directions, pedestrian or cyclist concerns, access problems, and emergency-access concerns.
Can I put out cones or signs to slow or redirect detoured traffic?
No. Do not install or move signs, cones, barriers, or traffic-calming devices in the roadway yourself. Report the condition to the project or road agency and let the responsible authority decide whether an authorized change is appropriate.
The Bottom Line
Use the signed detour and its access rules; do not improvise a shortcut or assume local residence creates an exception. Drive cautiously, report concrete hazards and access problems to the project contact or responsible road agency, and ask about a traffic review if neighborhood impacts persist. Local signs, plans, and agency procedures determine what happens next.
