If your toll tag is not detected, follow the plaza’s signs and staff instructions, keep moving safely, and do not reverse or stop in a live lane. Once you are clear, check whether the toll posted and use the toll operator’s official payment process if it did not. Procedures differ by location and lane, so do not assume another operator’s rules apply.
What to do at the plaza
- Follow the lane signs and staff directions. Do not reverse or stop in a live lane. Lane procedures vary: New Jersey E-ZPass says to pay the full cash toll and ask for a receipt after a no-read message in a staffed E-ZPass lane. In an E-ZPass-only lane, it says, “If you receive this message in an E-ZPass only lane, DO NOT STOP.” Those directions apply to the specified New Jersey lanes, not every toll plaza. - Check that you are in a compatible lane. Some systems require a lane equipped for their tags. India’s NHAI says FASTag users must use marked FASTag lanes, and the MMRDA Atal Setu FAQ likewise directs drivers to designated FASTag lanes. Follow the signs at your facility. NHAI FASTag FAQ; MMRDA Atal Setu FAQ.
- If the lane or equipment appears to have failed, follow the operator’s instructions. Policies can differ even between facilities using the same broad payment method. NHAI’s FAQ says a valid, functional FASTag with sufficient balance may be allowed through free when ETC equipment is not working; MMRDA’s Atal Setu FAQ instead says to pay cash and call its listed helpline. Do not treat either policy as universal.
After you are safely past the plaza
Check whether the toll was charged
Sign in to your tag account or use the issuer’s official app and review recent transactions. The Illinois Tollway advises that the best way to verify an I-PASS is active is to sign in online or in its official app and review transactions. A missed signal does not necessarily mean the toll was not recorded.
Check your account and vehicle details
- Confirm the tag is active and the account is not suspended.
- Check that a prepaid balance or payment method is valid and has sufficient funds.
- Make sure the correct vehicle and license plate are linked to the account.
- Confirm the tag is installed as directed and is programmed for the vehicle type.
NSW Government identifies an undetected tag, an inactive or suspended account, insufficient funds, and a plate not linked to the account as reasons a toll demand can still be issued. NSW Government toll notice guidance.
Pay through the operator if no transaction appears
Use the toll road or plaza operator’s official missed-payment route and meet its deadline. Methods and time limits vary. For example, Illinois Tollway guidance allows Pay By Plate for up to 14 days after travel; that is an Illinois-specific window, not a general toll rule. Keep any receipt from a cash payment and note the date, location, lane, and vehicle details. See Illinois Tollway Pay By Plate.

Why a toll tag may not be detected
- Incorrect placement or installation: The tag may not be mounted as its issuer specifies.
- Wrong lane: The lane may not support that toll system’s tag.
- Account or payment problem: The account may be inactive, suspended, or short of funds.
- Vehicle details or programming: The plate may not be linked to the account, or the tag may not be programmed for the vehicle type.
- Interference from another tag: TxDOT warns that multiple toll tags in one vehicle can interfere with one another.
- Reader or plaza equipment problem: The facility’s equipment may not be working correctly.
A single no-read does not establish that the tag is broken. Check the lane, account, vehicle details, and installation before seeking a replacement.
If the problem happens again
- Check the issuer’s installation instructions and make sure the tag is mounted in the correct location.
- Verify the vehicle class or type programmed to the account, along with the plate and payment details.
- Contact the tag issuer for diagnostics and ask whether the tag needs testing or replacement.
- Report apparent plaza equipment failures to the toll operator, which controls the facility’s payment and complaint procedures.
For TxTag/EZ TAG account and installation questions, TxDOT directs customers to HCTRA. Its guidance also warns about interference from multiple tags. TxDOT toll road guidance. Replacement tags are system-specific and may need registration or activation; do not assume a generic transponder will work.

Who to contact and what to verify
The toll operator handles the facility, lane instructions, equipment reports, and local missed-payment process. The tag issuer handles account status, tag installation, diagnostics, and replacement. Use the official site for the region where you travelled to confirm the applicable lane rules, payment deadline, contact details, and replacement procedure. Guidance from New Jersey, Texas, New South Wales, India, and Illinois illustrates why there is no single procedure for every plaza.
