If your domestic piped natural gas (PNG) connection is delayed, or gas service stops, first decide whether there is an immediate safety risk. A suspected leak or danger to people or property requires an immediate call to the gas provider’s emergency helpline or official emergency channel. A routine outage or installation delay starts with the provider’s customer-care and complaint process. Keep the complaint reference, dates, payment or application records, and written replies so you can escalate an unresolved case through the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) process.

This guidance applies to domestic PNG customers in India. Emergency numbers, providers and escalation routes vary by district, so confirm the entity serving your exact address in PNGRB’s official contact directory and on the provider’s current official website.

Classify the problem before you call

The correct channel and urgency depend on what has happened. Do not treat a possible leak like an ordinary service ticket, and do not assume a delayed new connection has the same deadline as an outage.

Situation First action What to record Published timing or standard
Suspected leakage or immediate danger Contact the provider’s emergency helpline or official emergency channel immediately. Time, address, consumer number if available, and instructions received. PNGRB’s FAQ lists 24 hours for safety/leakage complaint resolution, but this does not replace immediate emergency contact.
Routine service interruption Check an official outage notice, then register a complaint with customer care for the service area. Complaint reference, time service stopped, affected address, and whether nearby homes are also affected. PNGRB’s FAQ lists seven working days for PNG/LPG service issues. Network rules call for restoration as soon as reasonably possible after an emergency, not a guaranteed household restoration hour.
Delayed new connection Contact the provider with the application or consumer reference and ask what step is pending. Application date, payment receipt, clearances, site-visit details, provider replies and estimated date. The cited quality-of-service schedule requires prompt connectivity when necessary safety and statutory clearances are in place, but does not set one nationwide numeric deadline for every household.

When a smell or suspected leak is involved

Leave the routine complaint route and use the provider’s emergency channel immediately if you suspect gas leakage or another condition that could threaten life, safety or public property. PNGRB’s grievance form specifically directs consumers in such circumstances to contact the concerned entity through its emergency helpline number or official website. A portal complaint is not an emergency response service.

  • Flexible Probe: The 17-inch gooseneck allows easy access to hard-to-reach areas like pipelines, storage tanks, gas fireplaces, and basements, ideal for both indoor and outdoor leak detection. During use, point the probe toward the suspected leak source and move as close as 1–5 cm

  • What You Get: 1×PT520A Gas Leak Detector, 3×AAA Batteries, 1×Protective Case, and 1×User Manual. Allow 30 seconds of warm-up in clean air before starting detection

Do not wait for a seven-working-day service target, a callback from customer care or the result of a portal submission. Do not tamper with provider equipment. Follow the instructions of the provider and local emergency authorities, and give them the exact location and the nature of the danger.

When the gas simply stops

If there is no sign of an emergency, check whether the provider has posted an official outage notice for your area and contact the customer-care channel listed for that service location. Tell the agent whether only your home is affected or whether nearby customers appear to be without gas. Describe the symptoms without asserting an unsupported cause; for example, say that all PNG appliances stopped working after a stated time rather than claiming that a regulator or pipeline has failed.

When a new connection has not arrived

Use the application or consumer reference to ask the provider which step is outstanding. The delay may involve site access, a required safety or statutory clearance, payment confirmation, a scheduled inspection, construction work or another customer-side dependency. Ask for each pending action, who must complete it, and the date the provider currently estimates for connection.

What to do in an immediate safety emergency

  1. Move away from the danger if you can do so safely. Do not remain near a suspected leak while trying to complete a routine online form or gather documents.
  2. Call the correct emergency channel. Use PNGRB’s official directory or the provider’s official website to identify the emergency number for your state, district or geographical area. Numbers are location-dependent.
  3. Give precise information. State the service address, consumer or connection number if known, what you noticed, when it began and whether people or property may be at risk.
  4. Follow the responder’s instructions. Do not attempt unauthorised repairs or interfere with network equipment. If the provider or local emergency authority gives evacuation or access instructions, follow them.
  5. Record the call. Note the time, number used, reference number and any promised follow-up. This record is useful if a later service complaint is needed, but it should never delay the emergency call.

PNGRB’s network regulation identifies suspected gas leakage and risks to safe network operation as emergency circumstances in which the authorised entity may take emergency action. The provider may therefore need to isolate equipment or take other network-level steps before normal service resumes.

How to report and manage an ordinary outage

1. Check the service area and immediate facts

Confirm that the gas interruption is not limited to one appliance or an issue already covered by a provider notice. If you cannot safely determine the cause, report the interruption rather than experimenting with equipment. Record when service stopped, which appliances are affected and whether neighbouring customers report the same problem.

2. Register a complaint with the provider

Use the customer-care number, app, website or other designated channel for your exact service area. Provide the consumer ID, address, contact number and a short factual description. Ask for the complaint reference and the expected next update. Save confirmation messages, screenshots and emails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Understand the different time statements

PNGRB’s consumer FAQ, on its current page accessed in 2026, lists seven working days for PNG/LPG service issues. That is a published complaint-resolution timeline, not an independently measured average and not a promise that every incident will be physically repaired within seven calendar days.

For a network emergency, PNGRB’s regulation says the authorised entity must take steps to restore normal operations “as soon as reasonably possible after an emergency.” The same regulation places domestic PNG customers first in the restoration priority order, followed by essential services such as hospitals, clinics and milk supplies, then CNG customers and other users. This is a network-level priority rule, not an appointment time or an individual household guarantee.

How to pursue a delayed new PNG connection

Check your own prerequisites first

Review the application terms and any communications for requirements such as site access, identity or address information, payment, safety work and statutory clearances. The cited PNGRB quality-of-service schedule makes prompt connectivity conditional on the customer having the necessary safety and statutory clearances. If one is missing, ask exactly what document or approval is required and how to submit it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request a written status, not a general promise

Send the provider your application number and ask for four specific answers:

  • Which application or construction step is pending?
  • Is the provider waiting for you, a regulator, a contractor, a site visit or network work?
  • What action must each party take next?
  • What date does the provider currently estimate for connection?

Ask for the reply by email, SMS or another traceable channel. If a site visit is required, request the appointment window and keep proof that access was available.

Do not assume a universal deadline

The cited quality-of-service provision says connectivity should be provided promptly when the required clearances are in place, but the quoted material does not establish one numerical completion period for every domestic household in India. A provider’s local terms may include additional conditions or customer dependencies. Use those terms together with the provider’s written status when deciding whether the delay is unresolved.

Escalating a complaint through PNGRB

PNGRB’s grievance process is generally a second-stage route. Start with the concerned gas company or service provider and retain evidence that you did so. The PNGRB registration form states that a consumer may lodge a grievance when the provider has not responded within 30 days of the initial complaint or when the response is unsatisfactory, subject to the form’s eligibility prompts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Complete the provider stage. Submit the complaint through the provider’s designated mechanism and keep the reference number, submission date and all replies.
  2. Check eligibility on the current PNGRB form. The portal wording and required fields can change, so follow the live instructions rather than relying on an old screenshot or a remembered deadline.
  3. Prepare the record. Include your name and contact details, service address or consumer number, provider name, PNG category, the initial complaint number and date, a concise chronology, the provider’s response or lack of response, and relevant documents.
  4. Submit and track the reference. PNGRB’s FAQ says submitted grievances are routed to the concerned entity and can be tracked with the generated reference. If you remain dissatisfied, use the portal’s stated escalation option to PNGRB.

The 30-day figure is an eligibility condition described by the grievance registration page after the initial provider complaint; it is not the same as the seven-working-day service-issue timeline in the FAQ. Keep those stages separate in your records.

Describe facts that the recipient can verify. “No gas at the meter since 8:30 a.m.; neighbouring homes also affected” is more useful than an unverified diagnosis. For a connection delay, identify the promised or estimated date and the prerequisite you believe has already been completed.

Temporary cooking while service is unavailable

A portable induction cooktop can be a temporary cooking option where electricity is available and you have compatible cookware. This is a practical workaround, not a regulatory remedy or a requirement, and it will not suit every household. Check electrical capacity, ventilation and the appliance instructions, and never let a temporary cooking arrangement distract from reporting a suspected gas emergency.

Common mistakes that slow resolution

  • Using a routine form for an emergency: contact the provider’s emergency channel immediately when life, safety or public property may be at risk.
  • Calling the wrong service area: verify the district and authorised entity in PNGRB’s current directory.
  • Opening duplicate tickets: keep one primary complaint reference and add updates to it where possible.
  • Confusing different deadlines: seven working days, 24 hours and 30 days refer to different FAQ or portal conditions; none is a universal promise for every physical repair or installation.
  • Assuming “promptly” means a fixed number of days: the cited connection standard is conditional and does not state one nationwide household deadline.
  • Discarding records after a phone call: retain references, dates and written responses in case escalation becomes necessary.

Finding the right local contact

PNGRB publishes emergency and customer-care contacts by state, district or geographical area and authorised entity. Use the entry matching the exact address where the PNG service is installed or requested, then cross-check the number on the provider’s current official contact page. A number for another city or another authorised entity may not dispatch help to your home.

Because contact details and portal wording can change, verify them when you need them. For an emergency, use the current official emergency channel rather than waiting for a directory entry copied into an old article to be confirmed.
