Why does my fridge run constantly? Sometimes that is normal: variable-speed models can run for long periods at changing speeds. First check whether the refrigerator and freezer are actually cooling, then check doors, settings, recent changes and airflow. Follow your model’s manual for recovery times; arrange qualified service if temperatures will not stabilize or cooling is poor.
First check whether it is cooling
Compare the actual compartment temperatures with the appliance’s displayed or set temperatures. A refrigerator thermometer can help; follow the owner’s manual for the target temperatures and where to place the thermometer. A compressor that runs for a long time, by itself, does not prove that something is broken.
Some inverter or variable-speed refrigerators are designed to run continuously at varying speeds as cooling demand changes. Frigidaire says of one such design that it is “designed to run 100% of the time” except during defrost; Zanussi likewise notes that electronically controlled inverter compressors may run continuously at varying speeds. Allow time for recovery after a recent change
Long run times can follow a new installation, relocation, service, power interruption, or a large food and drink load. The appliance may need time to cool the contents and return to its normal temperature. Manufacturer time estimates differ, so use the guidance for your model rather than treating any figure as a universal deadline.

Check your owner’s manual for the model-specific recovery guidance. If the appliance still cannot reach or maintain its target temperatures after that period, move on to the checks below and consider service.
Check the simple causes that increase cooling demand
Doors and gaskets
Make sure drawers, bins and food packages are not stopping a door from closing fully. Inspect accessible gasket surfaces for dirt, visible wear or damage. A door left ajar or a seal that does not close properly allows cold air to escape and warm air to enter, which can keep the refrigerator running longer. A quick home check is not a definitive diagnosis of gasket condition.

Temperature settings and use
Check that the controls have not been set colder than necessary and consider whether frequent door openings or a recent large food load could explain the extra run time. Suggested settings vary by brand and model: Frigidaire lists 37°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer, while Zanussi recommends 4°C and -18°C. Location and airflow
Heat makes cooling harder. Check whether the refrigerator is near an oven or another heat source, whether a base grille is blocked, and whether the installation has the clearances specified in its guide. A garage or other unheated space can also fall outside the appliance’s permitted operating conditions. Check the model’s installation guide for its climate range and required spacing; these details are not the same for every refrigerator.

Clean condenser coils only when the manual allows it
Coil location and access differ by model. If the owner’s manual permits homeowner cleaning, follow its instructions and unplug the refrigerator before doing that maintenance. Use only an appropriate soft-bristle or condenser-coil brush if the manual allows it; do not remove sealed or protective panels. Frigidaire Appliance Parts suggests cleaning every 6–12 months, but that interval is repair-reference guidance, not a universal schedule. The appliance manual takes precedence. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician if the refrigerator is not cooling properly, makes unusually loud compressor noise, develops heavy frost, or continues running without stabilizing after the recovery period in its manual and the basic checks above. Possible internal causes include sensors, fans, dampers, defrost components, control boards, or the sealed system, but run time alone cannot identify which part—if any—has failed. Do not remove panels, handle refrigerant, or electrically test components as routine troubleshooting.
