What to Do if Road Construction Makes You Late for Work

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If road construction is delaying your commute, contact your supervisor or the workplace contact required by your attendance procedure as soon as it is safe to do so. Briefly explain that roadwork caused the delay, give your best arrival estimate, and update it if conditions change. Keep driving safely: obey work-zone signs and posted speeds, avoid risky lane changes or shortcuts, and never use a phone while driving. Whether the missed time is excused, paid, made up, or recorded another way depends on your employer’s policy, your contract, and the law where you work.

What to do right now

Your priorities are safety, prompt notice, and an accurate update. Use this sequence whether you are sitting in a queue, approaching a lane closure, or have already been told that a detour will add time.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Stop phone activity while driving. If you are moving, do not type or call. Pull over legally, wait until traffic is stopped in a safe location, or use a lawful hands-free method that does not distract you. California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) work-zone guidance says to “Avoid using mobile phones while driving in work zones.”
  2. Contact the required workplace person or channel. Follow your employer’s attendance procedure—such as a supervisor’s phone number, scheduling system, or designated absence line. Acas guidance says, “If someone cannot get to work or is delayed, they should contact their employer as soon as they can.”
  3. Give a realistic estimate. State when you now expect to arrive, not when you hope to arrive. If the queue moves or another closure appears, send a revised estimate through the same approved channel.
  4. Identify an urgent handoff. If you are carrying keys, opening a site, meeting a crew, receiving a delivery, or covering a safety-critical task, mention that in the message so your manager can arrange coverage.
  5. Follow the signed route safely. Use the marked detour or directions from traffic authorities. Do not cross barriers, drive on a shoulder, make an illegal turn, or improvise a shortcut to recover a few minutes.

A concise message you can send

“Road construction has slowed traffic on my route. I’m currently expecting to arrive around 8:45 a.m. I’ll update you if that changes. Please let me know if you need me to handle anything urgent remotely or arrange coverage.”

This wording is a practical template, not a promise that your employer must excuse the delay, pay for the missed time, or approve remote work.

How to drive safely through the work zone

Arriving a few minutes sooner is never worth a crash or an injury. Caltrans advises motorists to “Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.” Its work-zone guidance also emphasizes obeying posted speed limits, watching for workers, allowing ample following distance, avoiding unnecessary lane changes, and merging when directed.

  • Reduce speed to the posted work-zone limit. Conditions can change quickly where lanes narrow, pavement levels differ, or workers and equipment enter the roadway.
  • Leave extra space. A longer gap gives you time to react to sudden braking, cones, trucks, or a stopped vehicle.
  • Merge as directed. Follow signs, cones, arrow boards, flaggers, and police instructions instead of forcing into a lane or blocking a merge.
  • Ignore unsafe “time-saving” ideas. Do not use a closed lane, shoulder, median, private driveway, or unmarked path to bypass the queue.
  • Keep attention on traffic. Put the phone away, even if you want to check your manager’s reply or a map. Check updates only before departure or when safely stopped.

U.S. work zones recorded about 96,000 crashes, about 37,000 injuries, and 891 fatal injuries in 2022, according to CDC/NIOSH figures published in 2024. Those are U.S. counts for 2022, not current-year totals and not a prediction of the risk on your particular route.

What to tell your supervisor

A useful lateness notice answers three questions: what happened, when you will arrive, and whether work needs an immediate adjustment. Keep the explanation factual rather than blaming the road agency or promising a time you cannot meet.

Include Example Why it helps
Cause “A signed lane closure for road construction has stopped traffic.” Explains the delay without a long story.
Current estimate “I expect to arrive about 8:45 a.m.” Lets the supervisor adjust staffing and meetings.
Update commitment “I’ll message again if the estimate changes.” Creates a clear next communication point.
Coverage issue “I have the site keys; should I arrange for someone else to open?” Flags an operational or safety handoff early.

If your workplace requires a call rather than a text, call from a safe stopped location. If you cannot reach the supervisor, use the backup contact or absence system named in the policy and keep a record of when you tried.

Check the employer’s attendance and timekeeping rules

Road disruption can be a genuine cause of lateness, but it does not automatically determine how your employer treats the missed time. Acas advises checking the applicable policy and contract. Rules differ by country, state or province, collective agreement, job classification, and workplace.

Question What to check
Who must be contacted? Supervisor, dispatcher, site manager, scheduling app, or absence line.
When must notice be given? As soon as practical, before the shift, or within a stated time window.
How is lateness recorded? Time clock adjustment, attendance code, timesheet note, or manager entry.
Is the missed time paid? Policy, contract, wage law, and any collective agreement may control; do not assume either payment or nonpayment.
Can time be made up? Ask for written approval before extending a shift, changing breaks, or working another day.
Is remote work possible? It depends on your duties, equipment, security requirements, and explicit employer approval.

On arrival, clock in or report your arrival exactly as required. Ask which timekeeping code to use and whether any adjustment is approved. Do not alter a timesheet or stay late without authorization simply to erase the record of the delay.

Acas employment guidance is written for the United Kingdom. It can illustrate good communication practice, but it does not decide the law or payroll treatment for workers elsewhere. In every location, your own policy, contract, and applicable employment rules control the outcome.

Use official traffic information before and during the trip

Work-zone information is route-specific. Before leaving, check the road or transport department for your area, its traveler-information service, construction notices, traffic map, and any official detour. If you are already driving, wait until it is safe to check. A navigation estimate can change rapidly when a queue grows, a lane closes, or an incident blocks the planned alternative.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) explains that work-zone traffic management is intended to minimize delays while protecting motorists and workers, completing the project, and maintaining access for residents and businesses. Agencies assess effects using measures such as travel time, queue length, delay, and incidents. That planning does not guarantee a particular arrival time, so use the latest local information and leave a buffer.

Choosing an alternate route

  • Use a route that is open and authorized. Follow a signed detour or current official direction; do not rely on an old social-media post or a road that may also be under construction.
  • Compare the whole trip. A route that is shorter on a map may have a lower speed limit, a temporary signal, a school zone, or a second work site.
  • Consider your job’s needs. A route that avoids a queue may not work for a vehicle with height, weight, hazardous-material, or access restrictions.
  • Tell work if the estimate changes materially. A new arrival time is more useful than silence while your original estimate becomes impossible.

When the disruption is predictable or recurring

If a project will affect your route for days or weeks, address it before the next shift rather than sending a new emergency message each morning. Acas recommends early alternative arrangements for known disruption and discussion about ways to limit the effect on work.

  1. Confirm the pattern. Note the affected dates, typical queue, official closure hours, and the extra travel time you are actually seeing.
  2. Ask for a specific, temporary option. Examples include an earlier or later start, a different approved work location, remote administrative work, or a documented shift swap.
  3. Explain operational limits. State which duties require you on site, which can be done remotely, and who would cover opening, inspections, deliveries, or customer appointments.
  4. Get approval in writing. Confirm the start and end dates, timekeeping method, pay treatment, and notice requirements for days when conditions are worse.
  5. Review the arrangement. End or change it when the road authority changes the closure, and tell the manager promptly if the agreed schedule no longer solves the problem.

For widespread disruption, Acas says employers should have a policy covering contact arrangements, alternative work locations or methods, and pay treatment. A policy can make expectations clear, but it still does not create a universal entitlement to remote work or paid travel time.

How road agencies manage the delay

FHWA’s 2024 Work Zone Safety and Mobility Rule was published in the Federal Register on November 1, 2024, and took effect on December 2, 2024. It applies to Federal-aid highway projects and requires systematic management of work-zone safety and mobility impacts. The rule helps explain why agencies measure queues, delay, travel time, and incidents and plan access for nearby residents and businesses. It does not give an employee permission to arrive late, guarantee a detour, or determine payroll.

Common mistakes and better choices

Mistake Better choice
Waiting until you arrive to mention the delay. Notify the required contact as soon as you can do so safely.
Sending “traffic is bad” with no estimate. Name the construction delay and provide a realistic arrival time.
Typing while inching through the work zone. Pull over legally or wait until you are safely parked.
Speeding or making a last-second lane change. Obey the work-zone limit and merge where directed.
Assuming a late arrival is automatically excused or paid. Check the policy and ask how to record the missed time.
Repeatedly improvising a new schedule. Request a documented temporary arrangement for a recurring closure.

Decision guide for the next five minutes

  • You are moving in the work zone: Put the phone away, maintain space, and follow signs. Communicate only after stopping safely.
  • You are stopped safely: Send the approved notice with your best estimate and any urgent coverage issue.
  • The official detour is open: Follow it if it is suitable for your vehicle and job, then update the estimate if necessary.
  • No safe route is clear: Stay on the authorized road, tell work the delay is extending, and ask whether a remote or coverage solution is approved.
  • The same closure keeps affecting shifts: Arrange a conversation about a temporary schedule or work-location change before the next commute.

After you arrive

Complete the workplace’s normal arrival and timekeeping steps. Confirm that the supervisor received your earlier message, record the actual arrival time if required, and ask how the missed minutes should be coded. If a manager approved a different start time, remote task, or coverage plan, keep that approval with your attendance record. A brief factual record of the closure, your notice time, and the instructions you received can help resolve a later payroll or attendance question without turning the incident into an argument.

What this means for construction workers and site teams

Construction schedules often depend on a specific person opening a gate, receiving a load, operating equipment, or completing a safety check. If that is your role, say so in the first message and identify a trained replacement if one exists. Do not ask an unqualified person to perform a safety-critical task just to keep the schedule moving. Supervisors can use the early notice to resequence work, delay a delivery, or establish a safe handoff.

If you supervise a crew, make the expected contact method visible, provide a backup contact, and explain how road-related lateness is recorded. For a known project closure, communicate approved start-time changes and detours in advance rather than relying on employees to guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my employer legally excuse road-construction lateness?

There is no universal answer. Excusing the delay, paying the missed time, allowing make-up hours, or approving remote work depends on the jurisdiction, your contract, workplace policy, collective agreement, and employer decision. Follow the required notice process and ask how the time should be recorded.

Should I call my boss while I am stopped in construction traffic?

Only if you are stopped safely and the call is lawful and non-distracting. Otherwise wait until you can pull over or use an approved hands-free method. Caltrans advises avoiding mobile-phone use while driving in work zones.

What if the roadwork will delay me every day?

Raise the recurring problem before the next shift. Bring the official closure information and request a specific, approved temporary schedule, work location, remote-duty arrangement, or coverage plan. Confirm dates, timekeeping, and pay treatment in writing.

Do the 2022 U.S. work-zone crash figures apply to my commute?

They are national U.S. figures—about 96,000 crashes, 37,000 injuries, and 891 fatal injuries in 2022—and do not predict conditions on an individual route. Use current local road-authority information for your trip.
