If construction dust gets into your home, stop the dusty work if possible, keep people and pets away from the affected area, and check whether the work may have disturbed lead paint or asbestos before cleaning. For ordinary settled dust, use a HEPA-filtered vacuum on suitable surfaces, then damp-wipe and wet-mop from high surfaces down. Don’t dry-sweep or vigorously dust: that can put particles back into the air.
First, stop dust from spreading
Ask the contractor to pause dusty work until the source is contained. Close doors to affected rooms where practical, and keep children, pregnant people, pets, and others away while dust is airborne. EPA recommends isolating remodeling work with barriers and durable sheeting, and planning ventilation so pollutants are not carried into other rooms. For very dusty work, such as demolition, a simple flap barrier may not provide enough isolation; discuss a stronger containment plan with the contractor. See the EPA’s remodeling indoor-air guidance.

If dust-generating work is underway, nearby HVAC registers can be sealed to limit dust entering the system. If the system ran during dusty work or dust reached registers, changing the filter alone may not resolve the problem. Ask the contractor to assess the source and containment, and follow the equipment manufacturer’s directions for routine filter changes. Check for lead or asbestos before ordinary cleanup
Paint disturbed in a pre-1978 home
Homes built before 1978 may contain lead paint. Scraping, sanding, cutting, or otherwise disturbing painted surfaces can create hazardous lead dust, which is especially concerning for children. EPA advises treating paint in pre-1978 housing as potentially lead-containing unless an inspection shows otherwise. If that describes the work, keep occupants out and contact a qualified lead professional rather than treating a routine household cleanup as sufficient.

For covered renovation work in pre-1978 target housing and child-occupied facilities, EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule generally requires contractors to be lead-safe certified. EPA says the rule generally does not apply to homeowners renovating their own homes, with exceptions including renting all or part of the home, operating a child-care center there, or renovating for resale. Check current state and local requirements. Suspected asbestos-containing material
If work may have disturbed asbestos-containing material, do not sweep, vacuum, or disturb it further. Contact an asbestos professional or your local health department for advice. EPA’s asbestos guidance advises against disturbing suspected material and recommends professional help when work would disturb it. The appearance of dust alone cannot establish whether it contains asbestos.

Clean ordinary settled dust
Use these steps only when there is no reason to suspect lead, asbestos, or another hazardous substance in the dust. EPA’s lead-safe DIY cleanup guidance recommends HEPA vacuuming, wet wiping, and wet mopping; its indoor particulate guidance also recommends damp-cloth dusting and describes how HEPA filtration can help reduce particles escaping back into a room.
- Let airborne dust settle and limit access. Don’t clean while dusty work is still creating particles or while people are moving through the area.
- HEPA-vacuum suitable surfaces. Work carefully over floors, ledges, and other surfaces the vacuum is designed to clean. For carpets and furniture, vacuum slowly and carefully; vacuuming can stir dust, so people with asthma or allergies should leave the area while it is being done.
- Damp-wipe hard surfaces from high to low. Use a damp cloth rather than dry dusting, rinsing or replacing it as it collects residue. Clean higher surfaces before lower ones so loosened dust does not fall onto finished areas.
- Wet-mop hard floors. After cleaning surfaces above them, mop floors with clean water and suitable supplies. Avoid dry sweeping.
- Clean soft furnishings as appropriate. Vacuum upholstery carefully or launder washable textiles according to their care instructions. Repeat cleaning if settled dust remains.
These steps address ordinary settled dust; they do not certify that the air or surfaces are hazard-free. If lead is a concern after renovation, EPA says a certified lead dust sampling technician, lead inspector, or risk assessor can perform post-renovation testing. Match the response to the situation

Prevent dust during the next phase of work
Agree on containment with the contractor before work resumes. EPA recommends barriers and durable protective sheeting, sealing nearby registers during dust-generating activities, and ventilation that removes pollutants without carrying them into the rest of the home. Depending on the work, exhaust ventilation from the work area can help keep pollutants from migrating; the setup needs to suit the job rather than create a new airflow hazard. If anyone in the home develops concerning symptoms, or the material involved is uncertain and may be hazardous, seek advice from an appropriate qualified local professional or health authority.
