If your dryer is spinning but not heating up, first make sure you selected a heated cycle. Then check the likely external cause for your dryer type: an electric dryer’s circuit protection and power supply, or a gas dryer’s gas connection and shutoff valve. A turning drum does not prove the heater is receiving power, and the symptom alone cannot identify a failed part.
Start with the cycle setting
Check the control panel and owner’s manual to confirm the selected cycle is designed to heat. Air Only and Air/Fluff settings tumble clothes without adding heat, as Whirlpool explains in its gas-dryer troubleshooting guidance.
If your manual provides a quick test, follow that model-specific procedure. For example, Whirlpool describes running an empty gas dryer on a heated timed cycle for five minutes and then checking for warmth. That timing is Whirlpool guidance, not a universal test for every dryer.
Identify the dryer type before checking the supply
Electric and gas dryers use different heat sources, so their first supply checks are not interchangeable. Whirlpool notes that an electric dryer can keep tumbling even if the circuit serving its heating element is interrupted; a gas dryer can tumble without heat if its gas shutoff valve is closed.

If it is an electric dryer
Check the relevant breaker or fuse only as the manual directs. Whirlpool’s electric-dryer guidance explains that the motor and heating element use separate circuit paths, which is why the drum may turn while the dryer produces no heat.
If the breaker trips again, you are unsure whether the dryer has the required supply, or electrical testing is needed, stop troubleshooting and call a qualified electrician or appliance technician. Do not work on energized wiring.

If it is a gas dryer
Check that the gas supply is connected and the shutoff valve is open. Whirlpool’s gas-dryer instructions identify a closed valve as one reason a dryer may tumble without heating.
If the valve is open and a heated cycle still produces no warmth, contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider. Do not open or adjust gas components yourself.

Check lint and exhaust airflow when relevant
Clean the lint screen and inspect the exhaust path according to the owner’s manual, especially if drying has slowed, the dryer seems to overheat, or a thermal fuse has failed before. Restricted airflow can impair drying and may contribute to overheating, but a vent blockage is not established as the cause of every no-heat problem. Whirlpool distinguishes vent-related poor drying from other causes of no heat in its dryer troubleshooting guide.
Frigidaire Appliance Parts advises checking venting when replacing a blown thermal fuse because restricted exhaust can be relevant to fuse failure. A vent-cleaning brush or kit can help with maintenance, but it will not fix an electrical supply problem, a gas-supply issue, or a failed internal component.

When an internal fault may be involved
If the cycle and supply checks do not resolve the problem, an internal component may need diagnosis. Manufacturer guidance identifies a heating element or thermal fuse as possible causes; Bosch also lists a timer motor. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis or a verified ranking of the most frequent failures. The dryer’s brand and full model number, along with model-appropriate tests, are needed to identify the correct component.
A thermal fuse is a safety device. Replacing one without checking for an underlying airflow problem may leave a condition that contributed to overheating. Internal diagnosis or replacement can require disassembly; Whirlpool recommends professional help for heating-element or fuse work when basic troubleshooting has not fixed the issue. Do not buy a replacement part based on the symptom alone
Do not order a heating element or thermal fuse just because the drum spins without heat. First record the dryer’s brand and full model number, then have the suspected component diagnosed using procedures appropriate to that model. Part numbers and fit vary among dryers.
