Start with the thermostat mode and setpoint, visible power, filter, and unobstructed supply and return registers. If those checks do not restore normal operation—or a breaker trips again, a loop or pump makes unusual noise, or a fault code remains—stop and call a geothermal service professional. A ground-source system includes an underground loop, circulation equipment, an indoor heat pump, controls, and the building’s air-distribution system, so safe homeowner checks cannot diagnose every failure.
How a geothermal heat pump moves heat
A geothermal, or ground-source, heat pump exchanges heat with the ground rather than relying on the outdoor condenser coil found on many air-source systems. In winter, fluid circulating through an underground heat-collector loop absorbs heat from the ground. The indoor heat-pump unit transfers that heat into the building. In summer, the process reverses: heat is removed from the building and deposited in the ground.

- An underground loop and its fluid.
- A circulation pump and associated piping.
- The indoor heat-pump cabinet and its controls.
- A thermostat or zone controls.
- Ductwork, registers, returns, or another indoor distribution system.
A problem in any one section can feel like a heating or cooling failure. Do not assume that looking for a conventional outdoor air-source condenser will identify the problem; many geothermal installations do not have one.

First, define the symptom
Before changing settings or switching breakers, note exactly what you observe. Is the thermostat display blank, does the system run without moving air, or does air move but fail to reach the requested temperature? Is one zone affected while others work? Record the thermostat mode and setpoint, whether the blower runs, any displayed fault code, unusual sounds, and when the problem began. These observations help a contractor distinguish a control, airflow, distribution, loop, or equipment issue without asking you to open electrical or refrigerant compartments.
| What you observe | Safe checks | When to stop |
|---|---|---|
| No operation or a blank thermostat | Confirm the display is on, the mode is correct, the setpoint calls for heating or cooling, and the affected zone is selected. Check for an obvious power loss. | If power is present but the display or equipment remains dead, arrange service rather than opening the unit. |
| Airflow is weak or absent | Inspect the filter and make sure supply registers and return grilles are open and unobstructed. | If airflow remains poor after those checks, a technician should diagnose the blower, ductwork, controls, or other components. |
| Air moves but the space is not heating or cooling adequately | Verify mode and setpoint, then observe whether the issue affects all zones or only one. | Do not adjust loop flow, refrigerant, or internal electrical parts yourself; call a geothermal professional. |
| Noise, water, or repeated electrical trips | Note the sound or visible condition and turn the system off if operation appears unsafe. | Repeated breaker trips, gurgling loop piping, grinding from a circulation pump, persistent fault codes, or water around equipment require service. |
Safe homeowner checks, in order
1. Confirm the thermostat is actually calling
- Check that the thermostat display is illuminated. A blank display can indicate a depleted battery, loss of power, or a control problem.
- Select the intended mode: heat for winter operation, cool for summer operation, or the manufacturer’s specified automatic mode.
- Set the target temperature on the correct side of the current room temperature. A heating call requires a setpoint above room temperature; a cooling call requires one below it.
- In a multi-zone installation, select the affected zone and compare it with a zone that is working, if available.
- Allow the system’s normal start delay to pass. Geothermal equipment can use controls that delay compressor or blower operation; do not repeatedly change modes while waiting.
Use the installed owner’s manual for any model-specific reset procedure. A manual for a different model or loop configuration may give unsafe or irrelevant instructions.
2. Check visible power without opening the equipment
Look for an obvious household power interruption and check the equipment breaker or disconnect only as the installation and owner’s manual permit. If a breaker is tripped, one reset may be reasonable after confirming there is no visible damage, burning odor, or water near electrical equipment. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips again. Recurring trips can involve the heat pump, circulation pump, wiring, or another electrical fault and need a qualified contractor.
Never remove access panels, reach into a cabinet, bypass a safety switch, or handle wiring to restore operation. Geothermal units contain electrical components even when the thermostat appears off.
3. Inspect and replace the air filter correctly
A dirty or blocked filter can reduce airflow and contribute to poor heating or cooling. Turn the system off according to the owner’s instructions, locate the filter, and inspect it for dust loading, collapse, moisture, or an incorrect fit.

Replace it only with the size and type shown on the existing filter label or specified in the matching owner’s manual. Filter dimensions and ratings are equipment-specific; do not guess a “universal” size or install a filter that cannot seat properly. Do not operate the system without a filter unless the equipment manufacturer explicitly instructs that procedure. A replacement filter is the only routine physical item needed for this check, and no particular brand is required.

Confirm that supply registers are open and that return grilles are not covered. Move furniture, rugs, curtains, storage boxes, and other objects that block registers or returns. Check every register in the affected zone, not just the one closest to the thermostat. Closed or obstructed openings can make one room uncomfortable while the heat pump itself is operating.
If some rooms receive air and others do not, note the pattern for the contractor. Uneven distribution can involve dampers, ductwork, zone controls, or a localized obstruction that a homeowner cannot safely diagnose from the register face.
5. Check the equipment’s visible status
Without removing panels, look for a manufacturer status light, a displayed code, or an indicator that the unit is in a scheduled setback, lockout, or service state. Write down the exact code and its timing. Do not clear a code repeatedly before recording it; the history can help the technician.
Observe whether the system starts, whether air moves at the registers, and whether the problem is limited to heating, cooling, or both. A system that delivers airflow but cannot meet the setpoint points to a different diagnostic path from one that never starts.

When the basic checks do not solve it
Stop homeowner troubleshooting and arrange geothermal service when any of the following occurs:
- Heating or cooling remains inadequate after verifying thermostat settings, power, filter condition, and clear registers and returns.
- A heat-pump or circulation-pump breaker trips again after a reset.
- Loop piping produces gurgling or other new water-flow sounds.
- A circulation pump makes grinding or harsh mechanical noise.
- A fault code persists, returns immediately, or is accompanied by a shutdown.
- You see water around equipment, damaged wiring, burning odor, smoke, or other signs of an electrical or mechanical hazard.
Turn the system off if continued operation could worsen damage or create a safety risk. Keep people away from exposed water near electrical components and do not attempt to open the cabinet.

Loop flow and fluid condition
A geothermal loop must circulate the correct fluid at the required flow. Diagnosing flow restrictions, trapped air, pump performance, pressure, or antifreeze concentration requires instruments and knowledge of the installed loop. Gurgling can signal a circulation or air problem, but the sound alone does not identify the repair.
Refrigerant circuit and heat exchange
The indoor heat-pump unit uses a refrigerant circuit to move heat between the loop side and the building side. Refrigerant charge, leaks, metering devices, and heat exchangers are not homeowner adjustments. Opening that circuit or adding refrigerant without proper diagnosis can damage equipment and create safety and environmental hazards.

Contactors, capacitors, sensors, control boards, safety switches, and zone controls can all affect operation. A recurring breaker trip or persistent code needs electrical testing by a qualified person, not repeated resets or improvised bypasses.

Ducts and distribution equipment
Even a healthy heat pump cannot condition rooms effectively if ducts leak, dampers are mispositioned, returns are undersized, or a zone control fails. A contractor can test airflow and inspect distribution components without asking you to dismantle the equipment.
Preparing for the service visit
Give the contractor a concise record:
- The date and conditions when the problem started.
- Whether the fault is heating, cooling, or both.
- Thermostat mode, setpoint, and affected zone.
- Whether the blower runs and where airflow is weak.
- Filter condition, replacement date, size, and type shown on the label.
- Any breaker trips, fault codes, water, or unusual sounds.
- Whether another zone or operating mode still works.
Have the equipment model information and the correct owner’s manual available. Tell the technician about any recent electrical work, plumbing work, landscaping near the loop field, renovations affecting ducts, or changes to thermostat or zoning controls. Do not perform a reset or maintenance procedure from a manual unless it matches the installed equipment and its safety directions.
Maintenance that helps prevent repeat problems
The U.S. Department of Energy advises annual service by a trained technician to maintain peak geothermal heat-pump performance. Annual service can address system-specific checks that are outside a homeowner inspection, while homeowners can continue to monitor thermostat operation, replace filters on the schedule and specification supplied for their equipment, and keep registers and returns clear.

Finding qualified help
For system assessment, design questions, or help locating an installer or designer, the Department of Energy directs homeowners to a geothermal designer or local professional engineer and identifies directories maintained by the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association and GEO. These directories are starting points, not a guarantee of a contractor’s availability, licensing, or suitability for your particular loop. Confirm that the professional is licensed where required, insured, experienced with ground-source systems, and able to service your loop type and controls.
A practical decision path
- Thermostat: Confirm display, mode, setpoint, schedule, and zone.
- Power: Check for an obvious outage or tripped breaker; reset no more than once and never repeatedly.
- Airflow: Inspect the correctly specified filter and clear every supply and return opening.
- Observe: Record operation, airflow, codes, sounds, water, and which zones are affected.
- Escalate: If performance is still poor or any warning sign appears, switch off unsafe equipment and call a geothermal service professional.
This sequence keeps the useful homeowner checks limited to settings, visible power, filtration, and airflow while leaving loop, refrigerant, electrical, and control-board work to trained personnel.
