Before relying on a temporary accessible route, confirm that it is open now, connects the specific entrance, platform and direction you need, and works for your access needs along its entire length. Check the transit agency’s current station, elevator and construction notices; verify hours and service changes; and contact staff if any part of the route is unclear. Recheck close to departure because work-zone and station conditions can change.
Check the agency’s current notice first
Use the operating transit agency’s station notice, elevator status, service alerts and construction updates—not a general station map or an old screenshot. Look for the notice’s effective dates and latest update. SEPTA says its elevator status information is updated daily, while BART publishes station-specific outage information and alerts.
A closure may affect only one entrance, platform, travel direction or time window. A notice that says an elevator is out does not, by itself, tell you whether the rest of your trip is accessible or what alternative is available.
Verify that the route connects the places you need
Trace the trip from your actual starting point to your destination: street or entrance, concourse, platform, direction of travel and the train or route you intend to use. Confirm that the temporary path serves each connection. Do not assume that a station described generally as accessible has an accessible route to every platform or entrance during construction.

Read the station-specific details, including operating hours, closure dates, platform changes and announcements. GO Transit’s Danforth GO notice, for example, distinguishes platform access and the side of the community, gives overnight hours for a pedestrian-tunnel closure, and tells riders to listen for platform changes. Its notice also says the only step-free access between the station and the south-side community is not a recommended accessibility route. These details demonstrate why a general “step-free” description may not be enough to establish that a route suits your trip.
Assess the whole path, not just the elevator or ramp
Consider every segment of a work-zone detour, including the approach, temporary walkway, crossings and station connection. ODOT describes a Temporary Pedestrian Accessible Route as a required part of a Traffic Control Plan; the level of plan detail depends on project complexity and pedestrian volume. The route needs to be understandable and usable as a continuous path, not merely marked on a plan.

- Changes in level: Check for slopes, steps, abrupt level changes or other features that could interrupt your route.
- Crossings: Identify street or vehicle crossings and whether the route provides a clear, usable way through them.
- Barriers and route markings: Consider whether barriers or channelizing devices make the route detectable and help keep people out of the work area.
- Communication: Printed signs and markings on the ground may not communicate a detour to someone who is blind or has low vision. Ask the agency or staff for information in a format you can use.
The U.S. Access Board’s guidance discusses firm, stable, slip-resistant surfaces and communication for people with visual disabilities as features of temporary alternate routes. These are route-design considerations, not proof that a particular detour is suitable for every rider.
Understand the general accessibility requirement
The Access Board’s Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) state: “Where a pedestrian circulation path or transit stop is temporarily closed by construction, maintenance operations, or similar conditions, an alternate pedestrian access route or transit stop shall be provided in accordance with R204.” R204 describes requirements for alternate pedestrian access routes and transit stops. It also provides a limited exception where site conditions or existing physical constraints make establishing or maintaining a compliant route technically infeasible; in that circumstance, another means of access for pedestrians with disabilities is permitted.

This is general guidance, not a legal determination about a particular station or project. Applicability and implementation depend on the route, jurisdiction and project. The existence of a requirement does not establish that a specific route is open, clearly communicated or usable for your individual trip.
Compare alternatives by the trip they actually provide
If the agency lists more than one option, compare each one against your origin, destination and access needs rather than choosing by a label such as “alternate route.” Check:

Alternatives are station- and disruption-specific. BART says station staff may help riders find another way or refer them to bus or paratransit; other agencies may list a neighboring station, connecting bus or different path. Availability and eligibility vary, so confirm the option for your journey rather than assuming it exists.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ask staff or the agency when a segment is unclear
Give staff a concrete description: where you are starting, where you need to go, which direction or platform you need, and what access need the route must accommodate. Ask whether the full route is open and usable now, including its crossings and station connections, and what alternative or assistance is available if it is not.

- ⚠NOTES :Please pay careful attention to the height and length of ramp chart and if in doubt go to the next longer ramp length (do not try to go shorter). Due to the vertical side walls at the edge of the wheelchair ladder, an inappropriate distance or tilt angle may affect the opening and closing of the door if you use it on the threshold. If using it next to a sliding door, ensure sufficient space is available next to the threshold for the ramp extension plate; otherwise, the extension plate will obstruct the sliding door track, rendering the sliding door unusable.

BART directs riders who cannot enter or exit because an elevator is out to contact the Station Agent; riders who learn of an outage in advance are directed to call the Transit Information Center. Its elevator information also describes station-specific accessible alternatives and pathways. Follow the current instructions from the agency serving your station.
Make the final check close to departure
Before leaving, recheck the agency’s live station and elevator information and any construction or service alert. Confirm changes to hours, platforms, entrances or the listed alternative. If the notice does not answer whether the complete route fits your trip, contact the agency or station staff before relying on it.
