Check the landing manager’s current notice before you travel, then verify the conditions and signs when you arrive. A ramp may remain open even when a dock, float, parking area, boarding point, or approach is closed. Use only the components and routes explicitly open to the public; if the status or safe route is unclear, contact the managing authority and choose another confirmed launch if needed.
Check the landing’s current status before departure
Find out who manages the landing—such as a town, county, state agency, marina, or other operator—and consult that authority’s current alerts, closure notices, and facility information. Construction schedules and access restrictions can change, so a notice you saw earlier may no longer describe conditions on the day of your trip. Recheck shortly before leaving, especially if the project is ongoing or the facility’s status has been described as temporary.

Look for a notice about the specific landing rather than assuming that a general statement about a project applies to every facility nearby. Check the date and the exact location named in the notice, and note whether it describes a full closure, a partial restriction, or a change to one component. A notice saying that a dock is unavailable does not by itself answer whether the ramp is open; equally, a ramp listed as open does not establish that the dock or moorings can be used.
Hawaii’s boating agency posts facility-specific notices that distinguish between access conditions: one facility may have an open ramp while moorings are unusable, while a separate ramp may be closed until further notice. Those examples illustrate why status needs to be checked for the particular site and component; they do not establish current access at any other landing. Hawaii DOBOR facility notices

If the authority does not publish a clear status, contact the office or operator responsible for the landing. Ask what is open now, which route is permitted, and whether any posted limits affect your intended use. If you cannot identify the manager from the notice, use the contact information provided by the facility or the relevant local or state agency rather than relying on an unofficial assumption.
Confirm each part of the facility separately
“Open” can refer to one part of a landing, not the whole facility. Check the status of the ramp, dock or float, boarding area, parking, and approach route individually. A ramp may be usable while a dock is closed, or a closure may cover the ramp and the rest of the landing. Also consider what you actually need to do: launching or retrieving at an open ramp is different from tying up, boarding, or using a dock or float.
- Ramp: Is launching and retrieval permitted, or is the ramp itself closed or restricted? Confirm that the open status applies to the activity and time you intend to use it.
- Dock or float: Is it available for temporary tie-up, boarding, or other use? Do not assume it is usable because the ramp is open, or because a notice mentions the landing generally.
- Boarding area: Is there an open, marked place to board or disembark, or has access been rerouted? Do not substitute an unmarked construction-side area for an authorized boarding point.
- Parking: Is parking available for your vehicle and trailer, and does any construction restriction affect the route to it? An open ramp may not solve the access problem if the necessary parking area is closed.
- Approach route: Can you reach the open component without entering a work zone or crossing a closed area? A component’s open status does not authorize travel through a restricted route.
A July 29, 2025, Beaufort County notice provides a dated example of a broader closure: Buckingham Boat Landing, its ramp, and its floating dock were temporarily closed for repairs for safety and construction purposes. That announcement describes the status at the time it was issued, not the landing’s status today. It demonstrates why readers should check whether a closure covers just one feature or the entire facility. Beaufort County’s July 29, 2025 closure notice

Read signs and stay outside the work zone
When you arrive, read all signs before driving onto the ramp or approaching the dock. A current online notice is useful, but it does not replace instructions posted at the site. Follow posted directions, marked detours, barriers, and staff instructions. Treat construction equipment, barricades, and warning signs as boundaries—not as obstacles to move or routes to bypass. Do not enter a closed work area, even if a nearby part of the facility appears open.
Construction may bring moving equipment and changing site conditions. California’s 2021 boat-launch design guidance identifies construction activity and large equipment used to modify, expand, or repair facility components as situations that may call for safety signs. That is a reason to take site warnings seriously, not a guarantee that every hazard will have a separate sign. Do not treat the absence of a particular sign as permission to enter an area that is otherwise barred or appears to be a work zone. California boat-launch design guidelines (2021)
If equipment is moving near the ramp, the approach is blocked, or the only apparent route crosses a barrier, do not proceed on the assumption that access is safe. Stop outside the affected area and ask the facility manager for directions. If you cannot confirm a safe, authorized route, use another launch whose access has been confirmed. A schedule or expectation that construction will be finished is not a substitute for checking actual conditions at the time of your visit.

Resolve conflicting or unclear information
If an online notice says the landing is open but an on-site sign closes the ramp, dock, or route you need, follow the posted restriction and ask the managing authority to clarify. Conversely, the absence of a closure notice does not establish that a construction area is safe or open to the public. Current instructions from the authority and conditions at the site both matter. If a sign and an online notice appear inconsistent, do not choose whichever is more convenient; pause outside the affected area until you have clear instructions.
- Stop before entering the restricted or uncertain area.
- Read the signs and identify exactly which component or route is affected.
- Contact the authority responsible for the landing and describe the sign or condition you found.
- Proceed only if the authority confirms an open route that complies with on-site controls.
- If access remains uncertain, choose another launch after confirming that it suits your vessel and trailer.
Do not infer public access from the fact that construction is taking place or that permits have been issued. Permit requirements concern authorization for work; they do not tell a visitor whether a ramp or dock is open today. Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources notes that work affecting public waters may require additional federal, state, and local approvals. New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection identifies location-dependent regulated areas and permits for projects involving boat ramps and lifts. These are jurisdiction-specific examples of project requirements, not a visitor-access rule for every state. For your trip, rely on access instructions from the facility authority and on the controls at the site. Minnesota DNR permit guidance and New Jersey DEP boat-ramp and lift guidance
Know which closure rules apply where you boat
Closure-notice requirements vary by jurisdiction. Massachusetts provides one specific example: under 320 CMR 2.00, when the state determines that a public access facility must be temporarily closed or its use limited for necessary construction, maintenance, or repair, the regulation requires the Director to place signage at the facility and post information online within 24 hours. The regulation states: “Within 24 hours of making such a determination, the Director shall place signage at the applicable public access facility and post information on the Office of Fishing and Boating Access website that informs the public of such temporary closure or limits on the use of the facility.” This is a Massachusetts requirement; it should not be treated as a nationwide deadline or assurance that every landing in another jurisdiction will have an online notice. Use the local managing authority’s instructions for the landing you plan to visit. If information is missing or unclear, ask the authority directly rather than relying on a rule from another state. Even where a jurisdiction has a notice procedure, the practical decision remains site-specific: confirm which components and routes are available and observe the posted controls when you arrive.

When construction blocks the access you need, compare confirmed alternatives by what is actually usable and whether the location works for your trip. Do not assume the nearest landing is an appropriate substitute just because it appears on a map or has a ramp. Before redirecting, verify:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Which components are open at the alternative: ramp, dock or float, boarding area, parking, and approach.
- Whether the ramp and parking can accommodate your vessel, trailer, and tow vehicle.
- Any posted operating limits or construction restrictions that affect your planned arrival.
- How much additional travel the alternative requires.
Check the alternative’s current status with its own managing authority, and assess the access you need there in the same component-by-component way. An alternative is only useful if the relevant parts are open and its posted conditions fit your intended use. The evidence available here does not establish a particular nearby alternative, so do not assume one is open or suitable without checking its own current status.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a boat ramp if the dock is closed for construction?
Possibly, but do not assume that the ramp and dock have the same status. Check the managing authority’s current notice for each component, then follow signs and barriers at the site. Use the ramp only if it is explicitly available and you can reach it by an authorized route.
Does an open ramp mean the whole landing is open?
No. The ramp, dock or float, boarding area, parking, and approach route can have different restrictions. Hawaii DOBOR notices illustrate that a ramp can remain open while moorings are unusable, while a separate ramp can be closed. Confirm the parts you need individually.
What should I do if the website says open but a sign says closed?
Do not enter the restricted area. Follow the on-site sign, stop outside the affected area, and contact the facility authority to clarify the current status and permitted route. If access remains unclear, use another launch after confirming its status.
Does a construction permit mean the public landing is open?
No. Permits authorize or regulate work and may involve other federal, state, or local approvals; they do not establish whether public access is open today. Follow the facility manager’s current access instructions and the site’s posted controls.
Is there a standard deadline for posting a construction closure notice?
Not one established for every jurisdiction by the evidence here. Massachusetts 320 CMR 2.00 requires facility signage and online information within 24 hours in the specified state circumstances. That requirement is Massachusetts-specific, so check the rules and current notices from the authority responsible for your landing.
The Bottom Line
Before you travel, confirm the landing’s current status with its manager. At the site, use only the components and routes explicitly open, obey signs and barriers, and stay out of construction areas. If access is unclear or unsafe, stop and ask the authority—or use another confirmed launch.
