What to Check Before Installing Precast Concrete Panels

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before any precast panel is lifted, reconcile the approved panel drawings and erection plan with actual site conditions. Confirm panel identity, weight and dimensions; support elevations and connection locations; required concrete strength; approved rigging and lifting inserts; crane access and position; temporary bracing; erection sequence; and inspection responsibilities. Record every discrepancy and obtain resolution from the responsible engineer and project team before proceeding.

Start with an approved information package

Precast erection is controlled by the project’s engineered documents, not by a generic installation sequence. Assemble the current, approved versions before delivery and check that the crew, crane operator, riggers and inspectors are working from the same revision.

Documents to have at the job site

  • Panel design and shop drawings, including panel marks, dimensions, weight, finishes and embedded items.
  • The erection plan and sequence, showing the starting point, crane positions, delivery order, lifting configuration and temporary support.
  • Lifting and rigging details identifying each approved insert, lifting eye, sling arrangement, angle and capacity condition.
  • Temporary-bracing and support design, including brace locations, connections, required anchors and construction-load assumptions.
  • Permanent connection details for welds, bolts, dowels, grout, bearing pads and any cast-in hardware.
  • Joint details covering structural continuity, sealants, waterproofing, fire resistance and insulation continuity.
  • Relevant manufacturer instructions, engineer compliance certificates, inspection forms and applicable workplace-safety requirements.

WorkSafe Victoria’s Checklist for onsite erection of concrete panels (published 1 March 2006 and reviewed 27 July 2022) specifically calls for design documentation, lifting requirements, engineer compliance certificates, temporary bracing and structural inspections. WorkSafe New Zealand’s Safe work with precast concrete checklist similarly identifies panel weight and dimensions, lifting-anchor and brace locations, rigging, support design and erection sequence.

Assign responsibilities before the first delivery

Name the people responsible for erection planning, lift direction, rigging checks, temporary-brace installation, structural inspection, field changes and final acceptance. Clarify who may stop the operation and who can authorize a deviation. A delivery driver or installation crew should not be expected to decide whether an unexpected opening, missing insert or incorrect bearing can be accepted.

Responsibility What must be clear
Erection planner Current drawings, sequence, crane set-up, delivery order and temporary works.
Engineer of record or responsible engineer Design assumptions, bracing and connection requirements, tolerances and approval of field changes.
Lift director and rigging crew Panel identification, rigging arrangement, exclusion zone, communications and lift signals.
Inspector Hold points, records, acceptance criteria and inspection timing during erection.
Site manager Access, traffic control, weather monitoring, storage, emergency arrangements and stop-work authority.

Survey access, crane position and the receiving structure

Do not assume the site still matches the drawings. A survey before delivery should establish the geometry that determines whether a panel can be safely unloaded, lifted and supported.

Check delivery and crane access

  • Confirm the delivery route, turning radii, overhead clearances, bridge or pavement limits and any restrictions on delivery hours.
  • Set out the crane position, outrigger or track locations, working radius and tail-swing area. Verify ground bearing capacity and any need for mats or engineered support.
  • Provide a clear, level unloading and temporary-storage area that keeps panels stable and does not block emergency routes.
  • Identify overhead power lines, neighbouring structures, excavations, trenches, scaffolding, temporary works and other obstructions.
  • Establish a controlled exclusion zone for the suspended load and a safe route for workers to reach connection points.

Measure the supports and interfaces

Survey bearing elevations, ledges, corbels, anchor bolts, dowels, sleeves, starter bars and connection plates. Compare the measured locations with the approved installation drawings and the project’s specified tolerances. ACI’s Guide for Precast Concrete Wall Panels (ACI PRC-533-11, reapproved 2021) discusses installation tolerances and interfacing considerations. ACI’s precast tolerance document, ITG-7-09, addresses dimensional and erection tolerances; project-specific requirements still need to be written into the contract documents.

Resolve a mismatch before the panel arrives at the hook. Shimming, cutting, drilling or moving an anchor may alter load paths, fire performance or waterproofing. Treat any such change as an engineered revision, not a field convenience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify and inspect every panel before lifting

Use the panel mark on the delivery ticket and drawing to verify that the correct unit is being handled. A panel that looks similar may have a different weight, opening arrangement, centre of gravity or lifting pattern.

Item to verify How to verify it Why it matters
Panel mark and orientation Match the casting mark, delivery record and erection drawing; identify the face and top. Prevents installing the wrong unit or reversing finishes, openings and connections.
Dimensions and weight Compare the approved schedule with delivery information and investigate visible deviations. Determines crane capacity, rigging forces, storage stability and support fit.
Embedded items Locate lifting inserts, brace inserts, plates, sleeves, anchors and dowels against the drawing. Missing or misplaced hardware can make the designed lift or connection invalid.
Concrete condition Check for cracks, spalls, exposed reinforcement, damaged edges, corrosion or blocked inserts. Damage can reduce lifting or connection capacity and may require an engineer’s assessment.
Finish and openings Inspect architectural faces, reveals, penetrations, cast-in frames and joint edges. Protects tolerances and avoids discovering an unacceptable defect after placement.

Quarantine a panel with an unexplained defect or an unreadable identification mark. Photograph the condition, record the location and notify the responsible engineer and project manager. Do not lift first and document later.

Verify concrete strength, rigging and the crane plan

The panel must have reached the minimum concrete strength specified by the approved lifting design before it is lifted. The required strength may differ from the strength needed for final service, so use the lift-design requirement and the project’s test or release documentation rather than a visual judgment.

Pre-lift planning sequence

  1. Confirm the panel’s release record shows the required concrete strength and that the correct panel mark is recorded.
  2. Check the panel weight, centre of gravity, lift-point spacing and intended rotation against the rigging drawing.
  3. Verify crane rated capacity at the planned radius, including the rigging weight, dynamic effects required by the design and any capacity reduction from site conditions.
  4. Set the crane on the approved position and confirm ground support, level, outrigger deployment and clearance from edges or excavations.
  5. Stage the certified slings, shackles, spreader beams, lifting eyes and tag lines specified for that panel. Inspect them before use.
  6. Confirm the delivery order and lifting sequence leave a safe route to place and brace each unit without creating an unstable partial structure.
  7. Hold a lift briefing covering signals, radio channel, exclusion zone, weather limits, emergency lowering and the authority to stop.

YourHome’s Australian Government guidance on precast concrete advises planning crane positions, erection sequence and bracing layout in advance, and confirms that adequate concrete strength should be achieved before lifting. Specialist erection contractors and specialized lifting equipment are essential for this work.

Check lifting hardware and temporary bracing

Use only the inserts, lifting eyes, brace inserts, braces and connections shown in the approved design and permitted by their manufacturer instructions. Certified proprietary lifting eyes are not interchangeable merely because they fit an opening; capacity depends on the specific insert, orientation, concrete strength and loading condition.

Hardware inspection

  • Verify each insert and lifting eye is the specified type, fully embedded, undamaged and free of concrete that prevents full engagement.
  • Check threads, pins, welds, shackles, slings and spreader components for wear, deformation, corrosion or missing identification.
  • Confirm brace inserts and anchor points are present at the designed locations and have not been covered, bent or damaged during transport.
  • Install lifting eyes and connectors exactly as directed; do not substitute hardware or alter angles without written engineering approval.

Bracing readiness

Have every temporary brace, anchor, fastener, tool and access platform on site before the panel is lifted. The bracing design must account for the panel geometry, construction loads and wind specified by the project. A brace that is available somewhere on the site but cannot be installed immediately is not a safe temporary support system.

Inspect brace alignment, anchor installation and connection tightness after the panel is set. Keep the temporary support in place until the permanent connections identified by the erection plan are complete and accepted. Removing a brace because a panel “looks stable” is not an engineering decision.

Control placement, connections and joints

Set the first panel and establish the layout

Confirm the starting point, gridline, panel orientation, top and bottom marks, bearing pads and connection references before the lift. Mark the receiving structure so the crew can verify position without relying on a single measurement. Use the specified shims, packers or bearing materials and keep them within the approved tolerance and load path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once the panel is landed, check plumb, line, level, bearing length and connection locations. Do not force a panel against an obstruction or draw it into position by overstressing a brace, insert or connection.

Complete permanent connections in the specified order

Follow the erection sequence for welds, bolts, dowels, grout, bearing restraints and joint reinforcement. Confirm that each connection has the required access for inspection and that curing or tightening requirements are met. Under California’s specific rule in Title 8, section 1714, support must prevent falling, overturning or collapse until the permanent connections required by the plan are complete. Other jurisdictions may impose different wording or requirements; apply the rule adopted for the project location.

Protect the performance of joints

Joint details are not cosmetic gaps. Verify the specified joint width, backing materials, sealants, grout, fire stopping, insulation and reinforcement. The installed joint must preserve the design’s structural integrity, waterproofing, fire rating and insulation continuity. Keep joint faces clean and dry when the specified sealant or grout requires those conditions, and record concealed work before it is closed.

Use clear stop-work triggers

The following conditions require the lift or installation to pause until the responsible person resolves them:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The panel mark, dimensions, weight or orientation do not match the approved drawing.
  • Concrete strength documentation is missing, incomplete or below the lifting requirement.
  • A lifting insert, eye, brace insert, anchor or permanent connection is missing, damaged or in the wrong location.
  • Rigging, crane capacity, ground support or the planned radius differs from the approved lift plan.
  • Required temporary braces, anchors, tools or access are unavailable.
  • Surveyed supports, bolts, dowels, openings or elevations fall outside the project tolerance or conflict with the panel.
  • Wind, lightning, visibility, traffic or another site condition exceeds the project’s operating limits.
  • An unexpected crack, spall, obstruction or movement appears during lifting or placement.
  • A field modification is proposed without documented approval from the responsible engineer.

When work stops, secure the panel and crane in the safest condition available, establish an exclusion zone, document the issue with measurements and photographs, and route the decision through the designated engineer and project team. Never conceal a discrepancy by grinding, torch-cutting, drilling or welding until the revised detail is approved.

Understand the governing jurisdiction before work starts

Safety and erection requirements depend on the project’s location, adopted building code, workplace rules and contract documents. California Code of Regulations, Title 8, section 1714 is one jurisdiction-specific example. It requires an erection plan prepared by or under a currently registered California civil engineer, availability of that plan at the site, inspections during erection, responsible-engineer direction for bracing and field modifications, and support until permanent connections are complete. It also sets minimum capacity factors for lifting inserts and hardware. Those factors must not be transplanted to another jurisdiction or project without confirming the applicable law and design basis.

California section 1714(a)(1) states: “The erection plan and procedure shall be available at the job site.” Treat that as a California requirement, not a universal statement of law. Obtain the current local requirements and ensure the crew knows which documents constitute the controlling plan.

Compare alternatives by engineering criteria, not product labels

Projects sometimes evaluate different lifting systems, brace arrangements, connection details or technical references. Compare them against the approved design and site constraints rather than choosing a generic “best” product.

Decision area Criteria to compare
Lifting and bracing systems Compatibility with panel weight and geometry, lift-point capacity, concrete-strength requirement, brace layout, construction loads, wind, crane arrangement and manufacturer instructions.
Connections and joints Structural capacity, erection sequence, tolerance accommodation, weather and fire performance, insulation continuity, inspection access, repairability and future maintenance or deconstruction.
Technical references Jurisdiction and adopted edition, whether the document addresses design, tolerances, installation or safety, and whether it is guidance or a binding project requirement.

ACI PRC-533-11 is a technical guide covering design, tolerances, materials, fabrication, installation, quality requirements and testing. It can inform planning, but the contract documents, engineer’s design and local law control the work. WorkSafe Victoria and WorkSafe New Zealand checklists are practical safety aids; they do not replace the project-specific erection plan.

Keep records through erection and handover

Record panel release documentation, delivery condition, pre-lift inspections, crane and rigging checks, brace inspections, survey results, connection completion and engineer approvals. Note weather or other conditions that affected the sequence. Photograph concealed inserts, bearing conditions, fire stopping and joint materials before closing them.

At handover, verify that all temporary braces scheduled for removal have been released by the responsible engineer, permanent connections are complete and inspected, joints meet the specified performance, and outstanding defects or approved deviations are documented. A complete record gives the owner evidence of what was installed and gives future maintenance teams the information needed to understand the panel system.

Final pre-installation gate

Proceed only when the approved drawings and erection plan match the surveyed site, every panel and lifting component is identified and serviceable, the required concrete strength is documented, the crane and rigging are suitable, temporary bracing is ready, the sequence is understood, and inspection and stop-work responsibilities are assigned. If any of those conditions is unresolved, delay the lift and obtain an engineered decision rather than improvising at the hook.
