Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore buying a smart home device, check that it solves a specific household need, works with your existing platform and network, gives you acceptable privacy controls, and has a credible plan for security updates. Then confirm the exact model’s installation needs, service dependencies, warranty, and return terms. Compatibility labels and general product claims are not substitutes for checking how that model will work in your house.
Start with the job the device needs to do
Write down the task you want handled—such as controlling lights, adjusting a thermostat, monitoring an entry, or automating an appliance—and which features matter. A device can be technically compatible yet fail to meet the need if a key function requires a subscription, cloud connection, or separate controller.
Discuss the purchase with the people who live in the home. Cameras, microphones, and occupancy sensors can affect privacy in intimate spaces, so consider where the device will go and whether everyone is comfortable with it. NIST recommends checking recent privacy or security complaints, available controls, and configuration options before buying. Its cybersecurity researcher Julie M. Haney puts the buyer’s task simply: “If you’re looking to buy a device, consider a few questions.” (NIST’s smart-home safety guidance.)
Check compatibility with your current setup
Before comparing models, identify your existing smart-home platform, hub or controller, and wireless network. Then verify that the exact model supports the platform and the functions you want—not merely that it uses a familiar logo or protocol.

What Matter certification does—and does not—tell you
Matter certification is a useful interoperability signal for certified products in supported categories. It is not a guarantee that every feature works with every platform. Compatibility can depend on the device category, controller, platform, and any required bridge. Check the model’s listing and manufacturer support details for the specific functions you plan to use. The Connectivity Standards Alliance Matter overview describes the standard; the Matter FAQ addresses common compatibility questions.
Matter uses Bluetooth Low Energy during setup and Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet for device connections. Some Matter-only products require an internet-connected controller for control when you are away from home. Older Zigbee or Z-Wave devices can work with a Matter setup through compatible bridges; they do not gain native Zigbee interoperability without one. Do not assume you need a new hub or router: first check what your existing equipment supports and what the particular device requires.
Verify the features you will actually use
Look beyond basic on/off or status control. Confirm whether the platform supports the automations, alerts, remote access, or other functions important to you, and whether any require an account, bridge, internet connection, or paid service. If local control matters, confirm that the exact model and your chosen platform provide it.

Read the privacy and data controls before placing the device
Find out what information the device collects—such as audio, video, usage patterns, or household activity—where it is stored, and how long it is retained. Check whether you can disable sharing, remote access, or other collection you do not want, and whether those controls are easy to find and understand. NIST’s buyer guidance recommends researching available privacy controls and configuration options.

For a camera, check whether account information, live feeds, and archived footage are encrypted. Think about the camera’s placement and who might be captured before enabling remote viewing. The FTC’s camera security advice specifically highlights encryption and placement as considerations for buyers.
Look for authentication, updates, and a stated support period
Check whether the account supports strong authentication, whether the device can install updates automatically, and how the manufacturer handles security fixes. Look for a clear support period or end-of-support policy rather than assuming updates will continue indefinitely. NIST recommends enabling automatic updates when available and retiring or replacing devices that no longer receive them. Its IR 8425 consumer IoT cybersecurity profile describes capabilities commonly needed in consumer IoT products; it is a framework, not a guarantee about any individual item.

In the United States, the FCC Cyber Trust Mark is a voluntary program. Where a product carries the mark, its QR code is intended to link to product-specific cybersecurity information, including update practices and the support period. Check the FCC Cyber Trust Mark information and registry rather than assuming the label is present or that a device without it has a particular security status.
Consider your network and ongoing maintenance
A smart device also depends on the security and upkeep of the network it joins. The FTC advises users to change router default passwords, enable encryption, and check for router and device updates. NIST suggests considering a separate network for smart-home devices if the router supports that option. These are reasons to review your existing setup, not automatic reasons to buy a new router.
- Disable device features you do not use.
- Keep the router and connected devices updated.
- Disconnect devices that are no longer in use, especially older products that no longer receive security updates.

Confirm installation, service, warranty, and return details
Before ordering, check the exact product listing and manufacturer support page for requirements that can affect a house project or later ownership:
- Whether installation requires wiring, a specific power source, or professional work.
- Whether the device depends on a subscription, account, cloud service, or internet connection, and which features stop working if service ends.
- Whether warranty coverage transfers to a new owner and what support remains available.
- How returns work if the device does not fit your home or existing setup.
These details vary by model and listing, so verify them for the product you intend to buy. The FTC specifically recommends checking warranties and support policies when inheriting connected devices; see its smart-home privacy guidance.

How common are smart-home devices?
NIST’s December 2025 SP 1343 reports a Parks Associates estimate that in 2024, 45% of U.S. households with internet had at least one smart-home device, while 18% had six or more. These are Parks Associates estimates as reported by NIST, not figures independently verified from the original Parks Associates report here. The numbers describe U.S. internet-connected households, not every household or a measure of whether a device is suitable for a particular home. See NIST SP 1343.
