What should I check before buying a used compact track loader? Start with the machine’s identity and records, then inspect the undercarriage, structure, hydraulics, controls and safety equipment before carrying out a controlled operating test. The purchase makes sense only when the documented maintenance, measured wear and observed performance support the price and the work you need it to do.

Arrange a cold start in a clear, level area, use the exact model’s operation and maintenance manual, and bring a qualified technician when you cannot confidently judge undercarriage wear, hydraulic performance, structural repairs or fault codes.

1. Prepare before you visit

A few questions before travelling can prevent a wasted inspection. Ask the seller for the make, model, year, serial number, configuration, reported operating hours and every attachment included in the sale. Request service and repair records, fluid-analysis reports and a list of active or recent service codes.

Ask the seller not to warm the machine before you arrive. A cold start gives you useful evidence about starting, warning lights, smoke, leaks and unusual noise. Agree on a safe, level area where the loader can travel, turn, lift, tilt and operate an attachment without people entering the work zone.

Obtain the correct operation and maintenance manual before the inspection. It contains the machine-specific fluid checks, track-tension procedure, inspection points and component-wear specifications. Do not substitute measurements or procedures from another model.

  • Bring a flashlight, camera and notebook so you can document each finding.
  • Wear safety footwear, eye protection and clothing suitable for walking around a dirty machine.
  • Take a competent operator if you are not familiar with compact track loader controls.
  • Do not plan to crawl under raised loader arms; use the manufacturer’s approved support and lockout procedures.

2. Confirm identity, configuration and history

Match the machine to the paperwork

Locate the manufacturer’s serial-number plate and compare it with the bill of sale, service records and any listing information. Check that the model and configuration match what you need. Important differences can include rated capacity, hydraulic-flow option, cab package, counterweight, undercarriage type and control pattern.

Record the hour-meter reading, but do not treat hours as a condition guarantee. Hours can be misreported, meters can be replaced and two machines with the same reading may have had very different duty cycles. A loader used for abrasive demolition, for example, may show more wear than one used for light landscaping at the same hours.

Read the maintenance and repair trail

Look for dated entries that identify the work performed, parts replaced, fluids used and hour reading at each service. Strong records show regular servicing as well as the cause and resolution of major repairs. Missing records do not prove neglect, but they increase uncertainty and should affect the price you are willing to pay.

Ask specifically about track and undercarriage replacements, hydraulic-pump or final-drive work, overheating, electrical faults, structural welding and attachment damage. Request available fluid-analysis results and ask whether any warning or service codes remain active. Caterpillar’s used-machine inspection process reviews configuration, additions, service and repair history, fluid samples and service codes before its walkaround and operating tests; that sequence is a useful model for a private purchase, even though its certified-used standards apply to its own program.

Investigate ownership and use

Ask how the loader was used, where it worked and why it is being sold. Repeated operation in mud, demolition debris, rock or salt can accelerate wear. A credible seller should be able to explain unusual repairs, replaced panels or a recent component change. Treat a freshly pressure-washed machine, mismatched parts or newly painted areas as prompts for questions and closer inspection, not as proof of a defect by themselves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Make a systematic walkaround

Walk around the machine in one direction and photograph anything that needs follow-up before you start it. Look for fresh cleaning around a leak, wet dirt, oil tracks, missing fasteners, bent sheet metal, cracked welds, mismatched paint and components that appear much newer than their neighbours.

Check that guards, covers, access doors and steps are present and secure. Inspect the battery area, wiring, lights, mirrors and windows for damage or unsafe modifications. Confirm that the cab is complete enough for the work and climate in which you intend to operate.

Do not diagnose a machine from one visual symptom. A damp fitting may be residual oil, while a clean area may hide a leak that was recently washed. Mark each concern, then verify it during fluid checks and the operating test.

4. Give the undercarriage the most time

The tracks and undercarriage are exposed to abrasive material and often determine whether a seemingly cheap loader is economical. Clear enough packed soil and debris to see the track system. Inspect both sides rather than assuming they have worn equally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the rubber tracks or track pads

  • Look for cuts, cracks, missing chunks, exposed reinforcement and separation at the lugs or joints.
  • Check for damaged, bent or missing pads and for metal-to-metal contact where it should not occur.
  • Compare left and right track wear and look for a pattern that suggests misalignment or a drive problem.
  • Inspect the inside of the tracks and the area around the tensioning components for leaks and packed debris.

Caterpillar’s compact-track-loader guidance identifies damaged or bent pads, cuts, cracks, leaks, debris and uneven wear as visual inspection points. Bobcat likewise recommends checking for excessive or uneven wear and damaged or missing components.

Examine pins, bushings, sprockets, rollers and idlers

Look at the sprocket teeth for hooking or sharp wear, and check rollers and idlers for damage, seized movement or leakage. Examine pins and bushings for abnormal looseness and wear. A missing chunk of rubber or a bent pad is obvious; wear inside the track system may require a closer examination and measurement.

Check track tension correctly

Use the exact procedure in the machine’s manual. There is no universal compact-track-loader tension measurement that can safely be applied to every model. The correct procedure may specify where to measure sag, how to position the machine and how much track deflection is acceptable.

Do not tighten a track simply to make it look better. Excessive tension can increase stress on bearings, rollers, idlers and final drives; insufficient tension can contribute to derailment or poor tracking. If the seller will not permit the specified check, record track tension as unverified.

Measure remaining life when it affects the price

Visual inspection cannot establish an accurate percentage of remaining undercarriage life. If wear materially affects your offer, request measurements of the applicable components. Caterpillar notes that detailed checks may use calipers, a measuring tape and depth gauges, with the readings interpreted against model-specific specifications by the manual or a dealer.

A digital caliper can be useful for a measurement listed in the manual, but it is not a complete undercarriage inspection. Ask for a written report showing each measured component, the applicable specification, the reading and the estimated remaining life. Do not accept a generic “good tracks” statement without supporting measurements.

5. Check engine, fluids, cooling and hydraulics

Fluid and leak inspection

Follow the manual for the machine’s safe position, temperature and shutdown time before checking levels. Inspect engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant and fuel for the condition described by the manufacturer. Look around the engine, hydraulic lines, cylinders, couplers, travel motors and final drives for wetness or accumulated residue.

Examine hoses and hard lines for abrasion, cuts, bulges, exposed reinforcement, damaged fittings and signs of rubbing. Bobcat’s maintenance checklist includes hydraulic hoses and tubelines, engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant and cooling-system cleanout; use those as inspection categories, then apply the exact model’s requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the cooling system

Check the radiator and cooler area for blocked debris, bent fins and evidence that material has been allowed to accumulate. Follow the manual before removing guards or working near hot components. A machine that overheats during a short test may have a blocked cooler, a cooling-system fault or a deeper engine problem; it needs diagnosis rather than a guess based on the gauge alone.

Observe hydraulic behaviour

During the operating test, exercise lift, tilt, travel and auxiliary functions through their normal range. Listen for unusual whine or knocking and watch for jerky movement, hesitation, drift, warning lights or inconsistent speed. Check whether a function slows markedly when another function is used, and note whether the behaviour changes as the machine warms.

Manufacturer inspection programs include operational tests, but they do not publish one universal pass/fail hydraulic-pressure value for every compact track loader. If performance is questionable, a qualified technician should perform the pressure or pump tests specified for that model.

6. Inspect the frame, loader arms and attachment interface

Structure and workgroup

Inspect the main frame, loader arms, cross-members, pivot points, cylinders and cylinder mounts. Look for cracks, deformation, elongated pin holes, looseness, leaking seals and evidence of welding or reinforcement. A repair may be acceptable when it was engineered and documented; an unexplained weld in a highly loaded area deserves professional evaluation.

Bobcat’s multi-point inspection covers the frame, lift arms, attachment system and workgroup. Use the same scope on any make: inspect both sides, compare symmetry and look behind guards where practical.

Quick-attach plate and couplers

Check the attachment plate for bending, cracked welds, worn locking wedges and missing hardware. Confirm that the lock indicators show the engaged position and that the attachment cannot separate when the machine is operated according to the manual. Inspect hydraulic couplers for damage, contamination and leaks. If an attachment is included, examine its cutting edge, teeth, hoses, cylinders and mounting points as part of the deal.

Configuration and job fit

Verify that the loader’s rated capacity, hydraulic-flow option, access dimensions and control arrangement suit your intended attachments and site. Confirm these specifications from the exact machine documentation, not from a similar model year. A loader can be mechanically sound yet unsuitable if it cannot safely power the attachment, fit through an access opening or meet the lift requirement.

7. Check the cab, controls and safety equipment

Enter the cab only when the machine is secure and the seller has explained the controls. Check the seat, restraint, windows, door or cab enclosure, mirrors, lights, horn, backup alarm and visibility. Test gauges, switches, warning indicators and control interlocks.

Caterpillar’s certified-used criteria call for functioning panel controls and gauges and a ROPS that is not welded, drilled or damaged. Do not accept an altered, cracked or heavily damaged ROPS. Do not drill or weld it to mount accessories without manufacturer approval.

Start the machine and confirm that warning indicators illuminate as expected during the self-check and then go out when the relevant systems are operating normally. Record any lamp that stays on, flashes intermittently or has been deliberately covered. Check that the restraint and operator-presence or control-lockout systems work according to the manual.

8. Carry out a safe operational test

Only a competent operator should run the loader. Keep bystanders outside the work area, maintain a clear escape route and follow the operator manual. Never reach under raised arms or enter a zone where an attachment or load could move unexpectedly.

  1. Cold start: Before starting, note the ambient conditions and confirm the machine has not been warmed. Observe cranking, start time, smoke, warning indicators, leaks and unusual noise.
  2. Stationary control check: With the attachment in a safe position, move each control gradually and confirm predictable response, neutral return and smooth cylinder movement.
  3. Travel: Drive forward and reverse on level ground, then make gradual turns in both directions. Note pulling, hesitation, unusual noise, loss of power or a track that behaves differently from the other.
  4. Loader cycle: Raise and lower the arms, tilt the attachment through its normal range and hold position long enough to observe drift or leaks. Do not exceed the machine’s safe operating limits.
  5. Auxiliary hydraulics: If fitted, connect an appropriate attachment or use the manufacturer’s approved test procedure. Check engagement, flow response and coupler sealing.
  6. Attachment function: Operate the included attachment only in a clear area and within its rated use. Listen for abnormal vibration and check that locks remain engaged.
  7. Warm recheck: After the machine reaches normal operating temperature, repeat travel and hydraulic functions. Some faults appear only after warming.
  8. Shutdown inspection: Park safely, shut down as directed and look for fresh leaks, new warning codes, hot spots or changed fluid levels. If the seller cannot demonstrate a system, treat it as untested and price that risk accordingly.

9. Compare two or more candidates consistently

Use the same inspection sequence and record evidence for every machine. A lower asking price is not automatically better if it comes with undocumented maintenance, advanced undercarriage wear or untested hydraulics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision area Evidence to record Why it matters
Undercarriage Visual condition, track tension procedure completed, component measurements and model-specific interpretation Wear can create a large near-term repair exposure and affect tracking and stability.
Maintenance history Service intervals, major repairs, fluid analyses and unresolved codes Complete records reduce uncertainty about what has been maintained and what remains open.
Functional condition Cold start, travel, turning, lift, tilt, auxiliary hydraulics and attachment operation Operating behaviour reveals faults that a static walkaround cannot.
Structure and safety Frame, arms, pivots, coupler, cab, controls, interlocks and ROPS condition Structural or safety defects can make a machine unsuitable regardless of price.
Job fit Rated capacity, hydraulic flow, dimensions and attachment compatibility from the exact specifications A sound machine still fails the purchase if it cannot perform the intended work safely.
Total cost to ready Price, transport, immediate repairs, worn tracks or components, attachment work and required service The relevant comparison is the cost of putting the machine into your operation, not the listing price alone.

There is no dependable universal statistic for used compact-track-loader failure rates, typical undercarriage life or repair cost. Obtain quotes for the actual machine and its measured condition instead of applying a generic allowance.

10. Know when to hire a technician

Pay for a qualified dealer or independent heavy-equipment inspection when hours are substantial or undocumented, service codes are unexplained, leaks are present, structural repairs are visible, undercarriage wear is uneven or advanced, operation is abnormal or you lack inspection experience.

Request a written report with photographs, serial-number confirmation, service-code review, undercarriage measurements and a clear list of urgent, soon-needed and monitor-only findings. For hydraulic concerns, ask whether the technician can perform the model-appropriate pressure or pump tests.

Bobcat’s Certified Pre-Owned process is one manufacturer example: it describes a BobCHECK inspection, hydraulic-pump testing, technician documentation and company review. Those eligibility rules and program terms are specific to that manufacturer and can change, so verify them with a dealer rather than treating the program as an industry standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Use maintenance intervals as context, not a buying shortcut

A Bobcat maintenance checklist published December 4, 2019 lists, for the standard conditions in that checklist, engine oil and filter service every 12 months or 250 hours, reduced to 100 hours in severe conditions; fuel-filter service every 12 months or 500 hours; hydraulic or hydrostatic filter and reservoir service at 1,000 hours; and coolant replacement every two years. These are checklist recommendations, not universal purchase benchmarks. The exact model manual controls.

When records show that intervals were missed, ask what was done later and obtain a technician’s opinion on the resulting risk. When records show regular service but the machine fails the operating test, current condition takes precedence over paperwork.

12. Decide: buy, renegotiate or walk away

Proceed when evidence is coherent

Proceed when the serial number and configuration are clear, records are credible, the structure and ROPS are sound, undercarriage wear is measured or acceptably documented, controls and safety systems work, and the loader completes a normal operating cycle without unexplained symptoms. Keep a reserve for routine ownership costs even when the inspection is positive.

Renegotiate when the risk is measurable

Renegotiate when findings are repairable and the cost can be supported by written estimates: for example, documented track wear, a known hose replacement or an attachment that needs service. Base the adjustment on actual quotes, transport and downtime, not a percentage guessed from the hour-meter reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Walk away when safety or condition cannot be established

Walk away when the seller will not provide machine identity, blocks a cold start or safe operational test, hides active codes, or refuses access needed to inspect serious leaks, structural damage or undercarriage wear. An apparently low price does not compensate for an unknown ROPS condition, compromised frame or hydraulic fault that cannot be diagnosed before purchase.

The final question is simple: can you explain, with records and observed evidence, what you are buying, what it can safely do and what it will cost to make ready? If not, pause the transaction and obtain the missing inspection or professional report before committing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
