You must be on it to use the protected title “architect” in business or practice. However, UK law does not reserve every architectural or building-design service to registered architects: an unregistered person may provide those services, but must not present themselves as an architect.
What the Architects Register is
The Architects Registration Board (ARB) maintains the statutory register created under the Architects Act 1997. It is the definitive public record of people who are legally registered to practise under the protected title “architect” in the UK. ARB describes it as “the definitive record of all UK architects.”

The register has a practical purpose for clients, employers, public bodies and anyone checking a professional’s status. A search can confirm whether a named individual is currently registered. Every registered architect has a unique registration number, which the person can provide if a name search is inconclusive or several people have similar names.

Registration status is a legal fact about the use of a professional title. It is not, on its own, a rating of design quality, a guarantee that a project will be successful, or proof that a person is suitable for a particular building job.

Who must be on the register?
Anyone using “architect” in business or practice
The title “architect” is protected by law in the UK. A person must be registered before using that title in business or professional practice. This covers how someone describes themselves to clients, on a website, in proposals, on drawings, in company material and in other commercial communications.
The legal protection applies to the title itself, not just to a job title on an employment contract. A business name, trading description or marketing wording that leads people to believe an unregistered individual is an architect can create a title-misuse concern. The safest approach is to verify registration before using the title in any client-facing material.
Related descriptions are not automatically protected
Words such as “architectural consultant,” “architectural assistant,” “architectural designer” and “building designer” are not protected in the same way as the single title “architect.” Their use does not prove that the person is registered, and it should not be treated as an alternative way to confirm professional status. Ask directly whether the individual is on the ARB register and request the registration number where appropriate.
Companies and teams
The register records individual people. A practice may employ several architects, designers, technicians and project managers, but registration belongs to the named person. If a company advertises architectural work, identify which individual will take professional responsibility and check that person’s status rather than relying only on the firm’s name.

Does registration control who can provide architectural services?
No general UK rule prevents an unregistered person from providing architectural services. Someone who is not on the register may prepare design concepts, produce drawings, advise on materials or coordinate parts of a building project, provided they do not use the protected title “architect” in business or practice.
This distinction matters when you choose a professional. “Not registered” does not automatically mean “unable to help” or “providing an illegal service.” It means the person cannot lawfully hold themselves out as an architect. You still need to establish what they are qualified and insured to do, which approvals they can handle, and where another professional’s involvement is required.
Why check a person before hiring them?
ARB recommends checking registration before appointing someone, even when the person came through a recommendation. Registered architects are subject to ARB’s professional standards and are expected to hold appropriate insurance. Those protections can be important if the appointment involves design responsibility, contract administration, regulatory submissions or coordination with other consultants.

How to check the Architects Register
Use ARB’s public register search before signing an appointment or authorising work that will be presented under the title “architect.” Follow this process:
- Collect the person’s exact details. Ask for their full name as it appears on professional documents, their practice name and, if available, their ARB registration number.
- Search the ARB register. Enter the name in the official search tool and review matching entries rather than selecting the first similar result.
- Match identity information. Compare the result with the person’s email signature, proposal, address, practice details and other information they supplied. A common name can produce more than one possible match.
- Check current status. Confirm that the entry shows the person as registered at the time you are making the appointment. Save a dated record of the result for your project file.
- Ask for the registration number if necessary. A genuine registered architect can provide this unique number on request. Use it to resolve uncertainty where names, initials or business details differ.
- Assess the appointment separately. Once status is confirmed, review experience, scope, fees, insurance and responsibilities. A register entry does not select the right professional for you.
What if you cannot find the person?
An unsuccessful name search is a reason to investigate, not proof that title misuse has occurred. Check spelling, middle names, former names and the individual’s registration number. Ask the person to clarify which name they use on the register and to provide current registration details.
If the identity still cannot be confirmed, do not describe the person as an architect in your own documents or marketing. Ask ARB for guidance using its title-misuse process. ARB states that anyone can raise a concern where they suspect that the protected title is being misused. Keep copies of advertisements, proposals or drawings that prompted your concern, together with dates and the person’s stated identity.

Eligibility depends on a person’s qualifications and practical experience. A degree with “architecture” in its name does not, by itself, establish that the holder can register. ARB’s current route-specific guidance determines which qualifications and examinations apply to an individual.
The typical UK education and experience route
The UK Regulated Professions Register describes a common route as a sequence of study, supervised experience and professional examination. It is a typical pathway, not a universal rule for every applicant.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Stage | Typical requirement described for the UK route | What to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Part 1 | Three-year architecture degree | The qualification must meet the relevant recognition or accreditation requirements. |
| Practical experience after Part 1 | One year of appropriate experience | Experience must be suitable for the registration route, not simply any job in construction. |
| Part 2 | Two-year architecture degree or master’s degree | The exact qualification and its recognition status matter. |
| Further practical experience | Another year of appropriate experience | The typical description totals at least 24 months of appropriate practical experience. |
| Part 3 | Professional Practice Examination | This tests professional practice and completes the commonly described three-part route. |
The typical description requires all three qualifications and at least 24 months of appropriate practical experience. Individual cases can differ because ARB’s education and training framework, recognition decisions and examination routes determine what an applicant must provide.

UK, EU and other qualifications
GOV.UK states that applicants may register with UK or EU professional qualifications. Some overseas or other non-recognised qualifications require an ARB examination instead of, or in addition to, evidence from the applicant’s original education system.
ARB also states that a qualification accredited when it was completed may continue to be used for a registration application. That does not remove the need to meet the other route requirements. Overseas applicants should follow ARB’s current guidance for their qualification, professional experience, translations, identity documents and fees rather than relying on a general description of the UK route.
What is the penalty for using the title without registration?
GOV.UK says a person could be fined up to £2,500 per offence for using the name “architect” without being registered. This is the government’s stated maximum guidance, not a statement of the fine imposed in every case and not a prediction of what a particular investigation will produce.
The restriction concerns the protected title. It should not be expanded into a claim that every unregistered design service is unlawful. If you believe someone is using the title improperly, preserve the evidence and contact ARB for advice instead of attempting to determine the legal outcome yourself.
Registered architect or another designer: how to decide
Your choice should follow the project’s risk, complexity and statutory requirements. Registration is a threshold check when someone proposes to work under the title “architect”; it is not the only decision criterion.
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the professional do? | Design, planning, building-regulations information, tendering, contract administration and site inspections are different services. |
| Who takes responsibility for each submission? | Clarifies who prepares, signs, coordinates and responds to information requests. |
| Have they handled similar projects? | Relevant experience can reduce avoidable design, approval and construction problems. |
| How are fees calculated? | A fixed fee, percentage, hourly rate or staged fee carries different cost and change-control implications. |
| What insurance is in place? | Confirms how professional errors or omissions are addressed and what exclusions may apply. |
| Who else is needed? | Structural, fire, energy, surveying, heritage or other specialists may be required regardless of registration status. |
For a small alteration, an architectural designer or technician may be suitable for defined drawing work. A complex extension, new building, listed property or high-risk construction project may call for a registered architect and a wider consultant team. Make that decision from the written scope and project risks, not from a job label alone.
Practical checklist for a construction client
- Ask every person who uses “architect” for their ARB registration number.
- Search the official register and match the result to the individual’s identity.
- Record the date and outcome of the check.
- List each service required from concept through completion.
- Identify responsibility for planning, building regulations, specifications and site matters.
- Request evidence of relevant experience and appropriate insurance.
- Agree fees, exclusions, expenses, stages and change procedures in writing.
- Use neutral descriptions such as “architectural designer” only where they accurately describe an unregistered person’s role.
- Contact ARB if a person appears to be using the protected title without registration.
Key distinction to remember
The register answers one precise question: is this individual legally registered to use the title “architect” in UK business or practice? It does not prohibit all architectural services by others, and it does not replace a careful appointment. Verify status, then choose the person whose skills, scope, insurance and responsibilities fit your project.
