If a swing bridge is closed, do not guess the route or assume every traveler faces the same restriction. Identify the bridge, read the latest notice from its operator or road authority, check the rule for your travel mode, and follow the detour and traffic controls posted at the site. A closure may apply only during specified hours, may allow walking or cycling while stopping vehicles, or may include a transit exemption. Recheck the notice shortly before departure because staged work, weather and delayed completion can change the arrangement.
Start with the bridge operator’s current notice
The title of a closure notice matters. A swing bridge can be shut for a maintenance shift, a weekend component replacement, a navigation season restriction or a longer construction stage. An old map, navigation-app route or social-media post may describe a plan that has already changed.

- Identify the exact bridge and approach. Record the bridge name, road number, town, crossing point and the direction in which you are travelling. Several bridges in one area may have similar names.
- Find the responsible authority. Check the bridge operator, transport department, road authority or local government website and its latest dated notice. Look for the closure start and end times, affected approaches, reopening estimate and contact or status channel.
- Read the mode-specific wording. Notices may separate motor vehicles, buses, pedestrians, cyclists, mobility-device users and marine traffic. Do not infer permission for one mode from permission for another.
- Use the signed route at the time of travel. Temporary signs, cones, flaggers and police or work-zone directions take priority over an earlier map or an app suggestion.
- Recheck before leaving. Confirm that the closure window, detour and transit arrangements are still current, then allow extra time for a longer route or queues.
If the notice does not name a detour, do not invent one. Ask the responsible authority or follow the route marked on site. Exact directions cannot be verified without the bridge’s location and current operating information.
Confirm exactly when and where the closure applies
Check the date and hours
A maintenance closure may cover only certain hours on one day, a defined weekend or separate dates in a calendar. For example, the Seattle Department of Transportation’s notice updated October 9, 2026, scheduled the Spokane Street Swing Bridge closure to drivers from 7 a.m. Saturday, October 24, until 4 a.m. Monday, October 26, 2026. That schedule applies to that bridge and notice, not to swing bridges generally.

North Yorkshire Council’s 2026 Whitby information likewise lists traffic closures by individual dates and times. A calendar entry is not proof that another crossing, or even a later date at the same crossing, has the same hours. Check for a newer update before setting out.
Check the physical limits
Some notices close the bridge deck but leave an approach road open; others close a wider corridor, intersection or sidewalk. Read whether the restriction starts at the bridge, at a nearby junction or at a work-zone gate. A route that reaches the closed approach may require turning around, even if the bridge itself is visible.
Treat reopening estimates as provisional
Maintenance can run late because of weather, inspections, equipment problems or the need to make the site safe. A published end time is a plan, not a guarantee that the bridge will be open the moment the clock reaches it. Continue to follow the authority’s live update and the signs at the crossing.

Check whether your travel mode is permitted
| Travel mode | What to verify | Why it can differ |
|---|---|---|
| Motor vehicle | Whether the deck is closed for all drivers, only certain vehicle classes or a stated time window. | Maintenance may require a clear lane, load restriction or full vehicle exclusion. |
| Bus or other transit | Whether buses are exempt, diverted, short-turned or using a temporary stop. | Transit agencies may have a coordinated operating plan that does not apply to private cars. |
| Pedestrian | Whether a sidewalk or walkway remains open and whether a work stage temporarily closes it. | Workers may need to occupy the sidewalk or remove a safe barrier. |
| Bicycle or mobility device | Whether riding, rolling or walking is allowed, and whether the accessible path remains continuous. | A bridge can permit non-motorized crossing while restricting vehicles, then close the path during a specific task. |
| Marine traffic | Opening restrictions, navigation-season hours and emergency exceptions stated by the operator. | A swing bridge serves both land and water users, with separate operating rules. |
Seattle’s Spokane Street notice illustrates this distinction: drivers were scheduled to be unable to cross during the October 24–26, 2026 maintenance window, while people could bike, roll or walk across. That permission is specific to the Seattle notice and should not be generalized to another bridge.
WSDOT’s Skagit project information describes pedestrian, bicycle and mobility-device access as maintained except when work requires a sidewalk closure. The exception means an apparently open route can still be stopped for a particular work operation; verify the current condition and any temporary accessible path.
Follow the official detour, not a guessed shortcut
Read signs in sequence
Start at the first advance sign, not at the barricade. Follow the marked direction through each junction and watch for lane-control signals, temporary speed limits, flaggers and signs identifying local access. If a sign conflicts with an old printed notice, obey the current sign and report the discrepancy to the responsible authority when safe.

Compare alternatives using practical criteria
- Permission: Is the route authorized for your vehicle, bus, bicycle, mobility device or walking trip?
- Accessibility: Does it have a continuous sidewalk, suitable surface, crossing points and safe gradients?
- Time and distance: How much additional travel should you allow? Do not rely on an unverified app estimate during roadworks.
- Operating window: Is the alternative open at your departure and return times, or does it have its own restrictions?
- Authority: Is it a signed, official detour or merely a route generated by navigation software?
- Transit changes: Has a stop, turnaround or schedule moved?
Understand changeovers
During a staged project, the authorized route can change after a temporary arrangement ends. Bermuda’s September 30, 2026 government notice is a useful example. It told travelers to continue using the existing route and posted signs until the Ministry confirmed the changeover. The planned longer-term arrangement then used Southside Road, Kindley Field Park and Gate Number One, with a mini-roundabout, a bus turnaround and a moved St. David’s bus stop. The Ministry expected the changeover in early October, weather permitting, and said it would confirm the date. Those directions are for St. David’s/St. George’s, Bermuda only; check the latest Bermuda notice before using them.

Seattle, Washington: a vehicle closure with non-motorized access
The Seattle Department of Transportation’s Spokane Street Swing Bridge Rehabilitation Program notice, updated October 9, 2026, gave a precise window for replacement of center-lock components: 7 a.m. Saturday, October 24, to 4 a.m. Monday, October 26. During that window, people could walk or bike/roll across, but drivers could not. A driver should therefore use the signed vehicle detour rather than assume the open walkway permits a car, while a person walking or rolling should still check for any on-site work control.
St. David’s and St. George’s, Bermuda: a route and bus-stop change
The Government of Bermuda notice issued September 30, 2026, described construction of a new swing bridge and a planned detour through Southside Road, Kindley Field Park and Gate Number One. It also described a mini-roundabout, a bus turnaround and a relocated St. David’s bus stop. The minister urged motorists to follow signage and allow for adjustment. Because the notice made the changeover conditional on weather and a later Ministry confirmation, travelers should not treat the published plan as permanently active.

Mount Vernon, Washington: separate road and active-travel arrangements
WSDOT information for the Skagit project describes eastbound SR 536 traffic using a signed route via northbound Avon Allen Road, eastbound SR 20 and southbound I-5. It also discusses separate pedestrian, cycling and mobility-device access, subject to work needs. A search-result excerpt described a later full closure for passenger and freight traffic, but the project page was not fully available for verification in the cited material. Confirm the live WSDOT page and roadside signs before attempting this route; do not present the excerpt as a current detour.
Wasauksing Island, Ontario: status channels and operating restrictions
Indigenous Services Canada’s Wasauksing Swing Bridge information identifies the operator’s status channels and restrictions during the 2026 navigation season. It states that the bridge will not open to navigation in a land-based emergency and provides a bridge-status telephone contact and VHF channel. Those operating rules concern that bridge’s land and water traffic; they do not establish a road detour for another location. Use the published contact and channel when checking Wasauksing status, rather than assuming a general swing-bridge rule.

Whitby, England: a bus exemption
North Yorkshire Council’s 2026 Whitby closure calendar lists traffic closures by date and time and exempts buses. A private vehicle, taxi, cyclist or pedestrian may therefore have a different instruction from a bus passenger. Check the current calendar and the signs at the approach, especially if your trip spans more than one listed closure period.

Plan for accessibility and safe movement through the work zone
An open route is not automatically an accessible route. Check whether the notice addresses wheelchair users, mobility scooters, temporary ramps, surface changes, width, lighting and crossing assistance. If a sidewalk is closed, look for an authority-provided accessible diversion rather than entering the carriageway beside active machinery. Contact the operator or local road authority before travel if the notice does not explain how an accessible path is maintained.
Do not cross a bridge that is barricaded, moving, being inspected or controlled by workers, even if another person appears to be proceeding. Never move cones or barriers. For an emergency, call local emergency services and follow their instructions; a maintenance closure is not an invitation to use an unstable or restricted deck.
Recheck just before departure and prepare for delay
- Save the authority’s latest notice and note its publication or update time.
- Check weather and any stated work-stage change, but rely on the authority for the legal route.
- Allow additional time without inventing a fixed delay estimate; the sources do not establish a typical duration for swing-bridge maintenance.
- Tell anyone collecting you, meeting you or receiving a delivery about the detour, access point or relocated stop.
- Have a fallback meeting point on the open side of the crossing if the route changes while you are travelling.
Bermuda’s notice explicitly warned of delays and a pending confirmation of the new arrangement. That is why a route checked days earlier may be inadequate on the day itself.
When the bridge is not named
No single detour, reopening time or access exemption can be supplied for an unspecified swing bridge. The correct answer depends on its country, road or waterway, operator, work stage, closure hours and your mode of travel. Provide the bridge name or nearest settlement when seeking help, then use that authority’s current notice. Canada’s Wasauksing page, Seattle’s Spokane Street notice and North Yorkshire’s Whitby calendar demonstrate how different the operating information can be from one crossing to another.
Navigation software can help you visualize an alternative after the authority has authorized it, but it cannot replace a closure notice. Apps may lag behind a staged change, route a vehicle onto a restricted approach or omit a moved bus stop. Treat them as a planning aid and give priority to current signs and official instructions.
