There is no single certification checklist for data center construction. Employers repeatedly look for safety awareness, communication, coordination across trades, accurate documentation and role-specific technical knowledge. OSHA 10 or 30, NFPA 70E, trade licenses and commissioning or project credentials may matter for particular jobs, but they are not universal requirements. The right qualifications depend on the job family, the employer and, for licensed trades, the jurisdiction.

What skills do data center construction employers look for?

Data centers combine building construction with complex electrical, mechanical, life-safety and technology systems. Construction teams must coordinate work across trades while protecting people and equipment, documenting quality, and preparing systems for testing and turnover. The balance varies by position: a construction manager may oversee schedules and inspections, while an electrical safety specialist focuses on hazards, energy isolation and electrical drawings.

Construction management and field oversight

Construction management postings emphasize planning, schedule awareness, field inspections, quality control, safety oversight and contractor coordination. Managers may oversee work from construction through commissioning and turnover, so they need to follow issues through resolution rather than treat installation as the endpoint.

For a Chicago construction manager role, NTT also lists familiarity with Primavera P6, digital quality documentation, communication, and knowledge of civil and structural work, mechanical and electrical systems, building envelopes and fire protection. These are qualifications from one employer’s posting, not a standard checklist for every data center project. NTT Global Data Centers careers

Electrical knowledge and safe work coordination

Electrical-focused jobs can require knowledge of power distribution, the ability to read single-line diagrams and electrical drawings, and familiarity with hazard controls and energy isolation. Lockout/tagout coordination and clear communication during high-risk work are particularly relevant to energy marshal and electrical superintendent positions.

That skill set is not limited to knowing equipment names. Employers may expect candidates to interpret drawings or arc-flash studies, coordinate safe work, and communicate risks to crews and project teams. The exact depth depends on whether the job is oversight, installation or commissioning.

Commissioning and documentation

Commissioning work involves tracking and documenting tests, coordinating teams, and validating systems. Data center commissioning may include transformers, switchgear, UPS equipment, static transfer switches, power distribution equipment, chillers and cooling loops, as well as security, networks and life-safety systems.

Useful evidence of readiness includes experience maintaining test records, following issues to closeout and coordinating with the people responsible for different systems. Documentation matters because testing and turnover depend on reliable records, not just a system that appears to be running.

Transferable skills for active construction sites

Across the sampled roles, employers also repeat a practical set of working skills:

Which certifications and licenses apply to each job family?

Employer postings distinguish required qualifications from preferred ones, and those distinctions matter. The examples below describe specific postings; they should not be read as universal industry requirements. Job listings can change or close, so check the live posting before applying.

Job family and example employer Experience or education stated Credentials and technical qualifications stated
Construction manager / owner’s representative — NTT Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience; 5–7+ years of progressive construction QA/QC experience; mission-critical or data center experience OSHA 10/30 preferred; ICC, ACI or ASNT listed as possible additional credentials; Primavera P6 familiarity
Energy marshal / electrical safety — Brasfield & Gorrie Five or more years of relevant mission-critical construction, electrical safety oversight or data center commissioning experience Current NFPA 70E, OSHA 30-Hour and First Aid/CPR/AED credentials; ability to interpret one-line drawings and arc-flash studies; NFPA CESCP or journeyman/master electrician license preferred
Utility power construction management — Decima International 10+ years in construction management, including 5+ years with utility infrastructure, high-voltage systems, power generation or related electrical infrastructure Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E, NEC, NESC and IEEE standards; Certified Construction Manager (CCM) listed among qualifications
Commissioning engineer — QTS Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience; three or more years in data center engineering, commissioning, project management or equivalent Commissioning of building systems and critical electrical and cooling equipment
Electrical superintendent — Align Electrical installation experience Distribution systems, drawing interpretation, crew supervision, subcontractor coordination and commissioning readiness; journeyman or master electrician license and OSHA 30 preferred
Project manager — Bureau Veritas Work spanning preconstruction through commissioning and turnover PMP, LEED AP, and mission-critical or commissioning certifications preferred
Critical facilities technician — EMCOR Role-specific facilities work Oklahoma or reciprocal journeyman electrician or HVAC mechanical license, plus OSHA 10 and NFPA 70E certification during employment

The comparison illustrates why the question “What certifications do I need?” needs a job title and location to answer. An energy marshal posting names current safety credentials and accepts several kinds of relevant experience; a construction manager posting emphasizes QA/QC experience and lists OSHA 10/30 as preferred; a facilities technician example specifies a license and credentials during employment. These are different combinations, not a ladder where one certificate automatically qualifies someone for the next role.

Safety credentials: OSHA 10/30 and NFPA 70E

OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 appear in some of the sampled postings, but they are not listed as requirements for every role. The job description may specify a course level, whether the credential must be current, and whether it is needed before hire or during employment. Read the wording carefully rather than assuming that one course satisfies every employer’s requirement.

NFPA 70E appears especially in electrical safety and energy-control contexts. It is listed as a current credential for the Brasfield & Gorrie energy marshal role and as a working-knowledge area for Decima International’s utility power construction management role. These examples do not establish NFPA 70E as a blanket requirement for construction workers who are not performing or overseeing electrical safety work.

Trade licenses depend on the work and location

Journeyman or master electrician qualifications appear in some electrical and critical-facilities postings, not across all construction roles. The EMCOR example calls for an Oklahoma or reciprocal journeyman electrician or HVAC mechanical license. That language is tied to a particular role and jurisdiction; licensing requirements and reciprocity depend on the applicable state or local authority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a job involves licensed electrical or mechanical work, check the jurisdiction’s rules and the employer’s stated license level before applying. Do not assume a credential accepted in one location automatically qualifies you elsewhere. A posting that accepts a reciprocal license is not proof that every jurisdiction recognizes the same license or reciprocity arrangement.

Project, commissioning and construction credentials

Credentials such as CCM, PMP, LEED AP, ICC, ACI, ASNT and NFPA CESCP appear in particular postings, often as possible additional or preferred qualifications. Their presence signals that a credential may strengthen an application for a related specialty, but the postings do not establish that any one of them is necessary for all data center construction work.

For example, a project or construction-management candidate may see PMP, CCM or LEED AP in a posting, while a commissioning candidate should pay close attention to the stated experience commissioning building systems and critical electrical and cooling equipment. A safety credential, a trade license and a project credential address different qualifications; do not treat them as interchangeable.

How much experience do these jobs ask for?

The examples span different career levels and specialties, so there is no single experience threshold. The listed numbers are employer requirements in individual postings, not statistics about the workforce or guarantees of the minimum needed to enter the field.

  • Construction management: NTT’s example asks for 5–7+ years of progressive construction QA/QC experience and mission-critical or data center experience.
  • Electrical safety oversight: Brasfield & Gorrie asks for five or more years of relevant mission-critical construction, electrical safety oversight or data center commissioning experience.
  • Utility power construction management: Decima International asks for 10+ years in construction management, including 5+ years in utility infrastructure, high-voltage systems, power generation or related electrical infrastructure.
  • Commissioning engineering: QTS asks for three or more years in data center engineering, commissioning, project management or equivalent, alongside a relevant degree or equivalent professional experience.

Some postings accept equivalent education or professional experience, and adjacent work in commercial, industrial, utility or mission-critical infrastructure may be relevant. Present that experience accurately: describe the systems, responsibilities and project conditions you have worked with rather than claiming data center experience you do not have. If the posting asks for equivalent experience, make the connection explicit—for instance, identify relevant power infrastructure, QA/QC, commissioning, or project coordination work that matches its duties.

How to choose which credentials to pursue

  1. Pick a job family first. Decide whether you are targeting general construction management, a building trade, electrical safety, commissioning, project management or facilities work. The examples show that the qualifications differ substantially.
  2. Read the target posting for required versus preferred wording. A credential marked preferred is not the same as a stated requirement. Note the exact license, course level and any requirement to hold the credential before hire or obtain it during employment.
  3. Confirm safety-training details. If the posting mentions OSHA 10/30 or NFPA 70E, verify which course or credential is expected, whether current status matters, and when it must be completed.
  4. Check licensing in the work jurisdiction. For electrical or HVAC work, verify the relevant licensing and reciprocity rules with the applicable authority. Do not rely on the wording of a posting in a different state as proof of eligibility.
  5. Map adjacent experience to the role. Commercial, industrial, utility and other mission-critical projects may provide relevant experience where the employer accepts it. Explain your actual scope—such as distribution systems, inspections, safety oversight or commissioning tests—without overstating the project type.
  6. Show field-ready evidence. Use application materials and interviews to give specific examples of safe work planning, drawing interpretation, inspection or testing records, trade coordination and clear reporting. Choose examples that match the responsibilities in the posting.

Before enrolling in training or pursuing an optional credential, compare its cost and timing with the wording of current openings you actually want. The research supports no single mandatory credential route: some postings prefer a credential, some require it, and the EMCOR example allows specified OSHA 10 and NFPA 70E credentials to be obtained during employment. Confirm the exact expectation with the employer rather than assuming you need every credential listed across unrelated roles.

What employers’ postings do—and do not—establish

These examples show meaningful variation between employers and roles; they do not establish a universal entry-level route or a single industry-wide list of mandatory certifications. The postings sampled lean toward experienced and specialized positions, so their experience thresholds should not be treated as a definition of every way to begin a construction career.

Requirements can also change when a posting is revised or a position closes. For a specific application, rely on the live employer listing for the role and verify licensing with the authority for the job’s location. This is especially important when the posting specifies a particular license, reciprocal status or credential timing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What certifications do I need to work in data center construction?

There is no universal list. OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E, trade licenses and commissioning or project credentials appear in particular job postings. Start with the job family and live employer posting, then check which credentials are required, preferred, current, jurisdiction-specific, or allowed during employment.

Is OSHA 30 required for every data center construction job?

No. OSHA 30 is preferred in some sampled postings and specified for particular roles, but it is not a blanket requirement across the examples. Check the posting for the course level, whether current status is required, and when the employer expects it.

Do I need NFPA 70E certification for a data center construction job?

Not necessarily. NFPA 70E is especially relevant in electrical safety and energy-control contexts. The sampled postings list it as a current credential for an energy marshal and as a working-knowledge area for utility power construction management; they do not make it a universal requirement for all construction workers.

Can experience outside data centers count?

Some postings accept equivalent experience or relevant work in commercial, industrial, utility or other mission-critical infrastructure. Describe the actual systems and responsibilities you handled—such as power infrastructure, inspections, safety oversight or commissioning—and do not claim data center experience you do not have.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need an electrician or HVAC license?

Only when the role and jurisdiction call for one. Journeyman or master licenses appear in some electrical and facilities postings, including an EMCOR example requiring an Oklahoma or reciprocal electrician or HVAC mechanical license. Verify the required level and reciprocity rules with the relevant authority for the job location.

The Bottom Line

There is no one-size-fits-all credential for data center construction. Match your experience and training to the specific job family, distinguish required from preferred qualifications, and verify safety, licensing and timing requirements in the live posting and relevant jurisdiction.
