Never run a portable generator indoors, in a garage, or near doors, windows, or vents. Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide (CO), an invisible, odorless gas that can cause sudden illness or death. Also avoid refueling a running or hot generator, operating it where it can get wet, overloading it, or connecting it to home wiring through a wall outlet.
Never run a generator indoors or close to the house
Run a portable generator outdoors, more than 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents, with the exhaust directed away from buildings. Never operate it in a house, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, carport, or other enclosed or partly enclosed space. An open garage door or window does not make indoor operation safe, and a fan or carbon monoxide alarm cannot make an unsafe location safe. CDC generator guidance and CPSC guidance both stress outdoor placement away from openings.
CO has no color or smell, so you cannot judge exposure by looking at exhaust or noticing an odor. In a 2022 release, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimated about 750 generator-associated CO deaths from 2012 through 2022; the agency’s study summary said 81% of generator deaths occurred in residential locations. These are historical figures for the stated study period, not annual rates. In a 2012 release, CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said: “Where you run a generator can make the difference between life and death. The only safe place to operate a generator is outside in open air, placed far from your home, not in a garage or any enclosed space.” CPSC’s August 30, 2012 release.
Use a CO alarm as a backup, not permission
Keep a working CO alarm in the home; CDC advises a battery-powered or battery-backup detector. Follow the alarm maker’s placement instructions. An alarm is an added layer of protection, not a substitute for putting the generator outdoors at a safe distance.

Know the symptoms and act quickly
Headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion can be signs of CO exposure. If anyone develops symptoms, move everyone to fresh air and contact emergency services or a medical professional promptly.
Do not plug a generator into a wall outlet
Never backfeed a home by plugging a generator into a wall outlet. This can energize utility lines and endanger utility workers and neighbors, as well as create a serious electrical hazard in the home. For a generator connection to house wiring, have a qualified electrician install suitable transfer equipment that complies with local electrical codes. Follow the generator’s owner’s manual for its permitted connections.

Do not operate it where water can reach it
Wet conditions increase the risk of electric shock and electrocution. Keep the generator dry and do not operate it where water reaches it or can pool underneath. If protection from weather is needed, CPSC advises an open, canopy-like shelter over a dry surface where water cannot reach or collect beneath the generator. Do not enclose it to keep it dry: the exhaust still needs to disperse outdoors.
Do not refuel a running or hot generator
Stop the generator and let it cool before refueling. Spilled gasoline can ignite if it lands on hot engine parts. Use and store fuel according to the generator manual and the safety-container guidance in the CPSC safety alert; keep fuel away from occupied living areas and ignition sources.

Do not use damaged cords or exceed the generator’s load
Connect appliances directly to the generator or use a heavy-duty extension cord rated for outdoor use and for the load it will carry. Check the full cord for cuts or tears, and make sure its plug has all three prongs, including the grounding pin. Do not overload the generator; use the owner’s manual to check its load limits.
To maintain the safe distance from the house, CDC suggests using an extension cord longer than 20 feet. That length does not change the placement rule: keep the generator outdoors, more than 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents, with exhaust pointed away. CDC outage guidance.
