Bushing vs. Bearing: What’s the Difference?

A bushing is a type of plain bearing, not a separate alternative to bearings. Compare sliding and rolling contact, materials, lubrication and replacement requirements.

A bushing is a type of bearing: specifically, a plain bearing. The useful comparison is usually a plain bearing or bushing versus a rolling-element bearing. A bushing has sliding contact between the shaft and bearing surface; a rolling bearing uses balls or rollers. Which suits a construction machine or other application depends on its load, motion, space, lubrication, environment and maintenance requirements—not on a universal rule that one is better.

What is the difference between a bushing and a bearing?

“Bearing” is the broader category, not the opposite of “bushing.” A bushing is a plain bearing, often made as a sleeve or other simple bearing surface fitted into a housing. A rolling-element bearing supports motion with balls or rollers between bearing surfaces. Timken describes its spherical plain bearings as having no rolling elements, and SKF’s selection guide treats rolling bearings and journal bearings as separate options. Timken: Plain Bearings; SKF: Basic bearing type selection guide.

Feature Plain bearing or bushing Rolling-element bearing
Contact The shaft slides against a bearing surface. Balls or rollers roll between bearing surfaces.
Construction May be a sleeve or another plain-bearing form made from metal, polymer or composite. Uses rolling elements; product construction and sealing vary.
Typical trade-off Can suit compact arrangements and certain oscillating or sliding motions; friction and wear depend on design and duty. May offer low starting torque in the category described by SKF’s guide; performance depends on bearing type and operating conditions.

The last row is not a universal rating: SKF’s comparison is a guide-level description, not a guarantee for every bearing or machine.

When should I use a bushing instead of a rolling bearing?

Choose by the operating conditions and the manufacturer’s ratings for the specific component. For a construction machine, consider the actual joint or shaft arrangement, duty cycle and service conditions rather than choosing by component name alone.

uxcell 4pcs Sleeve Bearings 1" Bore x 1-1/4" OD x 1" Length Self-Lubricating Brass Bushing
  • Size - 1 inch bore brass sleeve bearings, with 1-1/4 inch outside diameter, 1 inch length.
  • Feature - Also known as plain bearings or bushings. They are mainly used to guide or reduce friction in linear applications.
  • Material - Cast brass bushing still allows high sliding velocity during high temperature and corrosive environments. Has good load capacity and wear resistance.
  • Function - Sleeve bearings provide reinforced housings for shafts or fasteners. They also help reduce bore size or replace worn original bushings on wheels.
  • Application - Used in various industrial equipment such as electrical equipment, household equipment, printing machines, and machine tools.
  • Load and space: SKF’s guide rates its journal-bearing options highly for load capacity relative to compactness, while its rolling-bearing category is rated “Good” on that comparison. These are qualitative ratings in that guide, not universal load limits.
  • Motion: SKF’s aerospace guide identifies oscillation and sliding or shaft motion among typical plain-bearing uses. It lists oscillation and limited complete revolutions for the particular rolling-bearing types it covers. Those examples are specialized, not general limits for all bearings.
  • Friction and starting torque: These depend on bearing design, material, load, lubrication and motion. SKF’s guide reports low starting rotational torque and very low loaded rotational friction moment for its covered rolling-bearing category, but gives differing values across plain-bearing types.
  • Wear and failure: SKF identifies progressive wear as a typical dynamic failure mode for its plain-bearing categories and surface failure for its rolling-bearing category. This is a guide-level generalization, not a predicted failure sequence for a particular part.
  • Environment and service: Dust, moisture, chemicals, sealing, lubrication access and maintenance intervals all affect suitability. A design that works in one location or duty may not suit another.

Are all bushings made from the same material?

No. “Bushing” describes a component form, not one material or performance level. SKF’s catalogue lists several constructions, including solid bronze, sintered bronze, wrapped bronze, PTFE composite, POM composite, PTFE polyamide and filament-wound bushings. The material and design influence how a bushing behaves; the catalogue examples do not make any one material universally best. SKF: Bushings.

Some polymer plain bearings are designed with embedded solid lubricants. For example, igus describes that feature for its iglide products and compares them with needle roller bearings. That is a manufacturer-specific product description, not evidence that every polymer bushing can run without external lubrication. igus: Needle roller bearings vs. iglide polymer plain bearings.

  • 932 bronze, also known as "Bearing Bronze", is a high strength, high endurance, and general purpose industrial bronze.
  • 0.75" Diameter, 12" Length
  • 932 is typically used in bushings, thrust washers, bearings, pumps, light duty gears, and valve components.
  • Meets ASTM-B505

Do bushings need lubrication?

It depends on the design and operating duty. Some bushings require lubrication; some self-lubricating journal bearings are designed to be maintenance-free. Rolling bearings vary too: SKF’s selection guide lists greased-for-life bearings in its covered category, while SKF’s lubrication guidance explains that lubrication affects friction, wear, corrosion protection and potentially cooling. Check the instructions for the exact component rather than assuming either bearing type is always lubricated—or never needs lubrication. SKF: Basic bearing type selection guide; SKF: Rolling bearings lubrication guidance.

What should I check before replacing a bushing or bearing?

The word “bushing” is not enough to identify a replacement. Confirm dimensions and operating requirements, then use the component manufacturer’s sizing and engineering guidance.
