Depending on its equipment, incoming material, contamination controls and local buyers, the plant may produce recycled aggregate, reclaimed asphalt, separated scrap metal, sorted wood, processed gypsum, masonry products and, in some operations, recovered glass, plastics or reusable fixtures.
There is no universal recovery list. A facility may accept only concrete and asphalt, or it may combine mechanical sorting with salvage and separate handling for additional materials. The plant’s permit, published acceptance rules and actual outlets determine what is recovered in practice.

The principal materials a C&D plant can recover
Construction and demolition debris is a mixed stream. A plant’s recovery line usually focuses on materials that can be separated consistently and sold into a documented reuse or recycling route. The most established streams are aggregate-bearing materials, metals, wood and gypsum-based products.
Concrete
Clean concrete can be crushed and screened into recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Depending on grading, contamination limits and local specifications, RCA may be used in applications such as road base, subbase, fill or other approved construction work. The same crushed material is not automatically suitable for every structural or pavement use; the receiving specification controls the required size, cleanliness and testing.

Asphalt pavement
Removed asphalt pavement can become reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) or another processed asphalt input for new asphalt mixtures and related paving uses. Asphalt pavement should be kept distinct from asphalt roofing shingles: they are different feedstocks, with different acceptance rules, processing requirements and outlets.
Metals, including steel
Ferrous and non-ferrous metals can be separated from mixed debris with manual picking, magnets, eddy-current separators or other equipment. The resulting scrap may go to a metal recycler when a downstream buyer accepts the alloy and form. Recovery falls when metal is buried in concrete, heavily contaminated or too mixed to separate economically.
Wood products
Usable dimensional lumber, pallets and other wood may be directed to reuse, remanufacturing, mulch, engineered fuel or another recycling route, depending on condition and local markets. Painted, treated, contaminated or mixed wood can require a different route from clean untreated wood. A plant should state which grades it accepts and whether its output is sold for reuse, material recycling or energy recovery.
Drywall and gypsum
Gypsum drywall can be de-papered and crushed. One possible use identified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a soil amendment in moderate quantities, subject to product quality and local rules. That is a conditional example, not a universal destination: paper, fasteners, coatings and contamination can prevent a drywall load from meeting an outlet’s requirements.
Brick and clay tile
Brick and clay tile can be sorted for direct reuse or crushed into aggregate or fill where the resulting material meets project specifications. The appropriate route depends on size, mortar attachment, contamination and the buyer’s requirements.
Asphalt shingles
Roofing shingles may be processed separately from paving asphalt. Some jurisdictions and markets allow processed shingle material in paving-related or other approved applications, but acceptance is not universal. Confirm that the plant is permitted to receive the specific shingle type and that it has a documented end use.

Doors, windows, plumbing fixtures, cabinets, lighting and other components may be salvaged for direct reuse when they can be removed without excessive damage and remain in usable condition. This work is often performed through deconstruction or a salvage operation before material enters a conventional crushing and screening line.
Land-clearing materials
Trees, stumps, earth and rock may be handled separately from building debris. A site-clearing operation might chip vegetation, screen soil or process rock, while a building-debris plant may not accept these materials at all. Ask whether the facility’s permit and equipment cover land-clearing loads.

How recovery works inside a plant
Recovery is a chain of decisions and physical steps, not a single machine. The EPA describes it as “a multi-step process that includes material segregation (e.g., separation of wood and aggregate from mixed debris), processing (e.g., size reduction, removal of nails), and end-use of the material in lieu of virgin material.”
- Load inspection and acceptance: The operator checks the load against the facility’s permit and acceptance policy. Loads containing prohibited or hazardous materials may be rejected, quarantined or sent to a specialist.
- Source separation or tipping-floor sorting: Materials separated at the demolition site are easier to keep clean. At a mixed-waste plant, workers and equipment remove large wood, metals, gypsum and other identifiable items before mineral processing.
- Size reduction: Crushers, shredders or other equipment reduce concrete, asphalt, masonry or wood to a manageable size.
- Screening and separation: Screens classify particles by size. Magnets and other separators recover ferrous and non-ferrous metals; air or density separation may remove lighter fractions where installed.
- Quality control: Operators check oversize material, visible contamination, moisture and product grading. A load that looks recyclable at arrival can still produce an output that fails a buyer’s specification.
- End use or final disposition: The recovered product is shipped for reuse, recycling, backfilling or another approved use. Residuals that cannot meet an outlet’s requirements go to disposal or a different treatment route.
Mixed feedstock generally creates more handling and a higher risk of contamination than clean, source-separated loads. Better separation at demolition can reduce disposal residue and improve the chance that aggregate, wood, gypsum and metals meet an outlet’s specifications.

“Recovered” can mean different treatment outcomes
Recycling is only one possible outcome. Reuse places a component back into service with little or no reprocessing. Backfilling uses suitable material to fill an excavation. Energy recovery uses a combustible fraction as fuel. Disposal sends the material to a landfill or another final-disposal facility. A published diversion percentage is meaningful only when the report states which of these categories it includes.

What national figures do—and do not—show
The EPA estimated that the United States generated about 600 million tons of C&D debris in 2018. The fact sheet was published in 2020, and the figure describes national generation, not the recovery rate of an individual plant.
| Material | Estimated U.S. generation in 2018 | Share of C&D generation |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete | 405.2 million tons | 67.5% |
| Asphalt concrete | 107.0 million tons | 17.8% |
| Wood products | 40.8 million tons | 6.8% |
| Drywall and plaster | 15.2 million tons | Included in the remaining 7.9% |
| Asphalt shingles | 15.1 million tons | Included in the remaining 7.9% |
| Brick and clay tile | 12.3 million tons | Included in the remaining 7.9% |
| Steel | 4.7 million tons | Included in the remaining 7.9% |
| All other products combined | Not separately stated in this table | 7.9% |
Those quantities help explain why concrete and asphalt dominate the national stream, but they do not establish what a particular facility accepts, how efficiently it separates material or where its outputs go.
For a separate geographic example, Ireland’s Environmental Protection Agency reported 398,745 tonnes of metal waste recycled in 2024. That is an Ireland-wide treatment figure, not a benchmark for one plant, and the reporting distinguishes recycling from energy recovery, backfilling and disposal.
Why two plants recover different materials
Acceptance rules
Permits and operating policies define whether a facility can receive concrete, shingles, gypsum, soil, glass, plastics or other streams. A plant may advertise “C&D waste” while excluding roofing materials, wet loads, asbestos-containing material or heavily contaminated wood.
Feedstock quality
Clean, source-separated material usually has more recovery options than a mixed load. Excess soil, household rubbish, insulation, food waste, hazardous residues or attached materials can lower product quality and increase reject quantities.
Equipment configuration
A concrete-and-asphalt crusher line is not the same as a full mixed-waste plant with manual sorting, magnets, screens and additional separators. Salvage operations require different labour and handling from aggregate production.

Specifications and regulation
Recovered aggregate, gypsum, shingle material and other products must meet the standards that apply to their intended use. Local road, fill, soil, building and waste rules may limit where a product can be placed, even when it is technically processable.

A material is not truly recovered merely because it was separated. The plant needs a buyer or approved use for the output. If that outlet disappears, a previously accepted fraction may be stockpiled, sent elsewhere or disposed of.
Materials that require special caution
Lead- and asbestos-containing building materials are regulated. They should not be presented as routine recyclable outputs from a standard C&D recycling line. Identification, removal, transport and disposal must follow the applicable local requirements and project conditions. Ask the project’s competent environmental or hazardous-materials professional how suspect material must be managed before demolition or delivery.
Other contamination concerns also need an explicit answer from the operator. For example, ask how the facility handles treated or painted wood, contaminated soil, fire-damaged debris, liquids and loads containing non-C&D rubbish. The correct route may be rejection, specialist treatment or disposal rather than ordinary recycling.
Questions to ask before sending a load
- Which materials are accepted, and which are prohibited?
- Does the plant prefer source-separated loads, and does separation change the gate fee or recovery route?
- Are concrete, asphalt pavement, shingles and brick handled as separate streams?
- What grades of wood and drywall are accepted?
- Does the facility recover glass, plastics or reusable fixtures, or only aggregate and metals?
- What contamination limit applies, and what happens when a load exceeds it?
- What product is made from each major stream, and where is that product used?
- Are reported diversion figures limited to recycling, or do they include reuse, backfilling or energy recovery?
- What documentation is available for weights, rejected loads and final destinations?
- What procedure applies to suspected asbestos, lead paint or other regulated material?
Common interpretation errors
- Treating generation as recovery: The EPA’s 2018 tonnages describe how much material was generated nationally, not how much any plant recovered.
- Calling every diversion recycling: Reuse, backfilling, energy recovery and disposal are separate outcomes and should not be merged without a definition.
- Assuming a material category guarantees an outlet: Glass, plastics, shingles and gypsum may be listed in C&D definitions while remaining unacceptable at a particular facility.
- Combining asphalt pavement with shingles: Their processing and markets differ.
- Ignoring contamination: A theoretically recyclable material can become a reject when mixed with hazardous or non-conforming debris.
Bottom line for project planning
Expect the strongest, most established recovery opportunities from clean concrete, asphalt pavement, metals, wood, gypsum, brick and tile. Glass, plastics, shingles, reusable components and land-clearing materials can also be recovered, but only when the facility has the right process, permission and outlet. Before demolition or delivery, obtain the plant’s current acceptance list and ask for the intended end use of each output; that is more reliable than applying a national recovery percentage to a local operation.
