It is different from tilt tension, which adjusts the resistance you feel when leaning back. Because control directions and available settings vary by chair, check the exact model’s manual before adjusting anything.
What does tilt lock do?
Tilt lock changes or holds the chair’s tilt movement. On some chairs it locks the seat upright; other mechanisms allow locking at multiple angles or restricting how far the chair reclines. When unlocked, a chair may rock or recline freely, depending on its design. “Tilt lock” alone does not tell you how many positions are available or exactly what happens when you release it.
HON describes locking upright for keyboarding or choosing a comfortable position where the mechanism permits. That is a user choice, not a universal posture prescription. HON also recommends changing seated positions often in its guidance on asynchronous controls. HON’s tilt-lock explanation and center-tilt guidance describe manufacturer-specific functions.
Tilt lock, tilt tension, and tilt limiter: the differences
| Control | What it changes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Tilt lock | Holds the chair in a permitted position or prevents some tilt movement. | Whether it locks upright, at multiple positions, or otherwise restricts movement. |
| Tilt tension | Changes how much resistance you feel when leaning back; it does not itself hold the chair in a fixed position. | Whether the chair has a separate tension adjustment and how its manual says to set it. |
| Tilt limiter | Restricts the available tilt range or releases that restriction; it may not lock the chair at a chosen angle. | Whether the feature limits range, locks positions, or both. |
HON describes a paddle for lock and release alongside a separate knob underneath the chair for tilt tension. In HON’s described setup, that tension knob is commonly near the front of the stem; turning clockwise tightens resistance and counter-clockwise loosens it. These directions apply to the described HON control, not every chair. See HON’s tilt-tension instructions.

Herman Miller’s Aeron guide describes an optional tilt limiter that limits the chair’s tilt range, separate from the knob that adjusts tilt tension. A range limiter should not be assumed to behave like a position lock. Herman Miller’s Aeron Chair Buying Guide explains those controls.
How to adjust a chair’s tilt lock safely
- Identify the exact chair. Find its model name or number, often on a label beneath the seat or in the purchase documents.
- Find that model’s manual. Use the manufacturer’s instructions to identify the lock control, its positions, and how to engage or release it.
- Operate the control as documented. Do not assume that pushing or pulling a lever has the same effect across brands, and do not force a lever that resists movement.
- Test the result gently. Confirm whether the chair is locked, freely tilting, or limited to a range before relying on the setting.
- Adjust resistance separately if needed. If the chair moves too easily or takes too much effort to recline, look for a distinct tension control and follow that model’s directions.
The differences between manufacturers are substantial. HON says that on most applicable models, its paddle is pushed inward about a quarter inch to lock upright and pulled outward to release; the user then reclines. Fractal Design’s Refine instead uses a left-side handle that is pulled out to lock and pushed in to unlock, with 11 lockable steps. These are examples for the named manufacturers and models, not universal instructions. Fractal Design’s Refine setup and functions page, modified 2025-04-01, gives that model’s directions.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
What to compare when choosing an office chair with tilt lock
Product descriptions can use similar terms for different mechanisms. Check the current listing and manual for the specific chair rather than inferring its behavior from the phrase “tilt lock.”
- Lock behavior: Is it upright-only, does it offer several lockable positions, or does it limit the tilt range?
- Free-tilt behavior: What happens when the lock or limiter is released? Does the chair rock or recline freely?
- Separate tension adjustment: Can reclining resistance be changed independently of the lock?
- Control layout: Where are the controls, what does each one do, and which direction operates it?
For example, HON describes an upright-oriented lock function, Fractal Design documents 11 lockable positions for Refine, and Herman Miller describes an optional range limiter for Aeron. Those differences show why the exact model’s specifications matter; they do not establish that one mechanism is better for every user. For a known chair that needs repair, check its model-specific documentation before seeking a replacement tilt mechanism; compatibility cannot be assumed across chairs.

What is tilt on an office chair?
