What Is the “TallyWhacker” Ceiling-Banging Device?

TallyWhacker is a reported DIY ceiling-banging project, not a verified retail device. Here’s how its servo-and-spring mechanism was described—and why it is a risky response to noise.

“TallyWhacker” is the name Hackster.io used for a homemade device designed to bang against a ceiling in retaliation for noise from an upstairs neighbor. It is not established as a product you can buy: the article describes a DIY build in which a servo flicks a doorstop-style spring, sending vibration through the ceiling structure. The project’s own account warns that this kind of retaliation could escalate a neighbor dispute.

How the ceiling-banging device works

Hackster.io describes a build by a Reddit user identified as MealsWheeled. A servo flicks a doorstop-style spring mounted against the ceiling; the spring’s vibration is intended to transmit noise through the floor above. The article reports that the device could be triggered by voice and describes random activation intervals of 5 to 30 seconds. Those are reported project details, not independently verified performance results. Hackster.io’s project article

What the build includes

The article names a 20kg RC servo motor, an RC LiPo battery pack, an ESP8266 development board, a custom 3D-printed mount and a doorstop-style spring. Its reported control chain includes Google Home, Home Assistant and MQTT, alongside the ESP8266 board. The description does not establish a tested bill of materials, compatibility details, or current component availability.

  • Actuation: a servo flicks the spring.
  • Contact and mounting: a doorstop-style spring and a custom 3D-printed ceiling mount.
  • Control: Google Home, Home Assistant, MQTT and an ESP8266 development board, as described in the article.
  • Power: an RC LiPo battery pack.

Is TallyWhacker a product you can buy?

The cited account describes a homemade project, not a verified retail product. It does not establish that a complete TallyWhacker device is commercially available. An ESP8266 development board is one named component, but the article does not confirm a current listing or whether any particular board will work with the rest of the build.

Why retaliation can worsen a neighbor-noise dispute

The project is presented as a response to noise from upstairs and as a form of retaliation; Hackster.io itself raises the risk that it could escalate the conflict. Housing Ombudsman case narratives also show ceiling-banging arising amid noise disputes: one describes a resident acknowledging banging on the ceiling after finding noise unreasonable, while another records reports of repeated banging and steps that included recording noise and considering mediation. These are examples from specific cases, not general legal guidance or proof that a noise-making device is effective or advisable. Housing Ombudsman case Housing Ombudsman case

Safer ways to address noise from upstairs

  • Keep a dated record of when the noise occurs and how it affects you; retain recordings only where lawful and appropriate.
  • Raise the concern calmly with the neighbor, landlord, building manager or housing provider, depending on your situation.
  • Ask about mediation or the applicable noise-complaint process before taking action that could provoke a counter-response.

Rules and remedies depend on location and circumstances. The cited Ombudsman decisions illustrate particular disputes and should not be treated as a jurisdiction-wide rule.
