What Is the Dyson V9 Vacuum—and Is It Worth Buying?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: the Dyson V9 is a lightweight cordless stick vacuum introduced in 2025, positioned between the older V8 and the more powerful V11. The standard V9 Motorbar is most appealing when portability, stairs, quick cleanups, and carpet maintenance matter more than maximum hard-floor performance or long high-power runtime. It can be worth buying at roughly $250–$300, but the standard model is difficult to justify near its reported $599.99 list price.

For a construction household or workshop, the V9 should be viewed as a light-duty cleanup tool—not a replacement for a wet/dry shop vacuum. Its small bin, short Boost runtime, and limited ability to handle large debris make it poorly suited to sawdust, drywall dust, gravel, metal filings, or renovation debris.

What exactly is the Dyson V9?

The Dyson V9 is a 2025 cordless stick vacuum family. It is not an older Dyson model equivalent to the V8, nor is it Dyson’s flagship cordless vacuum. Dyson positioned it between the V8 and V11 in its lineup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two important V9 configurations:

  • Dyson V9 Motorbar: the standard dry vacuum. It includes a Motorbar floor head designed for multiple floor types and hair removal.
  • Dyson V9 Submarine Extra: a wet-and-dry configuration that adds Dyson’s Submarine wet roller head and related accessories. It is a materially different package, not simply a cosmetic variation of the Motorbar.

Availability can be confusing. Dyson’s U.S. V9 Motorbar shopping URL has redirected into the broader cordless-vacuum section, and the V9 product page showed an out-of-stock notice during the research period. Check the exact model number, seller, warranty, condition, and included tools before buying. Historical prices should not be treated as current inventory information.

What comes with the V9 Motorbar?

The tested Motorbar package included:

  • Vacuum body and removable battery
  • Charger
  • Wall dock and mounting hardware
  • Extension wand
  • Motorbar floor head
  • Hair Screw tool
  • Combination tool
  • Crevice tool
  • Washable filter
  • Documentation

The standard Motorbar package does not include the Submarine wet roller or a dedicated soft-roller cleaner head. Bundle contents can vary by country, retailer, and promotion, so confirm the listing rather than assuming every V9 includes the same accessories.

What is different about the Submarine Extra?

The V9 Submarine Extra includes the Motorbar head plus a Submarine wet roller head. It also adds accessories such as an up-top adapter, upholstery tool, and soft dusting brush. The wet roller introduces water-tank filling, dirty-water emptying, and roller-cleaning responsibilities.

That makes the Submarine a potential fit for someone who specifically wants one machine for dry vacuuming and light hard-floor washing. It is not automatically the better V9, and it should not be treated as a substitute for a conventional deep-cleaning vacuum or a construction-site wet/dry extractor.

Key specifications and how they translate to real use

Feature What to know Practical consequence
Advertised maximum runtime Up to 40 minutes This is a low-power maximum, not a realistic Boost runtime with a powered floor head.
Independent battery testing RTINGS measured nearly an hour in Eco and less than 10 minutes with the Motorbar head in Boost. Use Eco or Medium for routine cleaning; reserve Boost for stubborn areas.
Power settings Eco, Medium, and Boost You can trade suction for runtime, but there is no automatic suction adjustment.
Dust capacity Dyson/Vacuum Wars lists 350 ml; RTINGS measured a 0.18-liter dirt compartment. Expect frequent emptying, particularly with pets, tracked-in debris, or renovation dust.
Weight Vacuum Wars lists a 1,226-gram handle weight; RTINGS measured 4.63 pounds overall and 2.89 pounds in hand. Its main advantage is maneuverability for stairs, spot cleaning, and smaller homes.
Controls Trigger-style power control You must hold the trigger while cleaning, which some users find tiring.
Display LCD screen Shows power level, estimated remaining battery life, and maintenance alerts.

The two published dust-bin figures should not be presented as interchangeable. They may reflect different measurement methods or listed versus usable capacity. Either way, the V9’s compartment is small by whole-home-cleaner standards.

How well does the Dyson V9 clean?

Independent tests suggest a vacuum with good carpet potential but uneven all-surface performance. That distinction is important: strong suction or embedded-carpet results do not guarantee excellent pickup of large crumbs, edge debris, or material lodged in floor gaps.

Carpet and hair

Vacuum Wars measured 92 inches of water lift, compared with its cordless-vacuum average of 73.29 inches, and reported a 96% result in its embedded-sand carpet test. It also recorded 0% hair wrap in its 14-inch hair-tangle test. The Motorbar’s active hair-removal mechanism is a meaningful advantage for long hair and ordinary pet-hair maintenance.

RTINGS found decent pickup on low- and high-pile carpet. However, it also reported that the head can crush or drag larger debris because it lacks height or gap adjustment. Pet-hair pickup on carpet was decent in Boost but weaker than the best-performing Dyson models. On upholstery, performance was mediocre at Medium and improved in Boost, although the stronger airflow could blow loose hair around.

Dyson Cyclone V10 Origin Cordless Vacuum
  • Powerful Dyson suction and run time to deep clean your home. Without the cord.
  • Up to 60 minutes of fade-free Dyson power.¹
  • Power trigger helps maximize energy efficiency, only using power where you need it.
  • Choose between three cleaning modes for the right power where you need it.
  • Motorbar cleaner head deep cleans all floor types. De-tangles wrapped long hair and pet hair as you clean.

Hard floors

RTINGS rated bare-floor pickup as mediocre. The V9 left more debris around baseboards and floor gaps and could drag larger debris backward. That matters if your home has grout lines, cracked flooring, deep plank gaps, or frequent cereal-sized crumbs and other large particles.

This does not mean the V9 cannot clean hard floors. It means the standard Motorbar is not optimized for every hard-floor problem. Buyers with mostly hardwood, tile, or laminate may prefer a model that includes a dedicated soft roller or has more effective edge and large-debris handling.

Construction and workshop cleanup

The V9 is not a construction vacuum. Do not use a lightweight cordless stick vacuum as your primary tool for:

  • Large quantities of sawdust or drywall dust
  • Concrete, masonry, or silica-containing dust
  • Wet debris unless you have the Submarine configuration and are following its intended use
  • Nails, screws, sharp offcuts, gravel, or metal shavings
  • Heavy post-renovation cleanup

Fine construction dust can quickly load filters, reduce airflow, and create a difficult-to-empty mess. For jobsite work, use a suitable wet/dry shop vacuum with the appropriate filtration and dust-management setup. The V9 can make sense for finished rooms, stairs, vehicles, or quick touch-ups after the major debris has already been removed.

Filtration: strong performance, but do not call it automatically HEPA

Dyson markets sealed filtration with performance of up to 99.99% at 0.1 microns. RTINGS measured very strong particle filtration on its tested unit: 99.99% capture of particles as small as 0.3 microns in Boost and 99.97% in other modes.

There is an important wording distinction. RTINGS noted that Dyson does not officially market the tested Motorbar filter as a HEPA filter. Therefore, the responsible description is high particle-capture performance and sealed filtration as marketed by Dyson, not an unqualified claim that every V9 configuration is officially HEPA-certified.

Strong filtration during operation also does not eliminate the dust released when emptying a small bagless bin. If fine dust is a concern, empty the container outdoors or close to a waste bag, avoid shaking the debris indoors, and keep the filter maintained according to the applicable manual.

Dyson V8™ Cordless Vacuum
  • Lightweight for quick, versatile cordless cleaning.
  • Up to 40 minutes of fade-free Dyson power.¹
  • Power trigger helps maximize energy efficiency, only using power where you need it.
  • Choose between two cleaning modes for the right power where you need it.
  • Motorbar cleaner head deep cleans all floor types. De-tangles wrapped long hair and pet hair as you clean.

The V9’s main advantages

  • Low weight: easier to carry up stairs, lift overhead, and use for short cleaning sessions than heavier cordless vacuums.
  • Good carpet credentials: the embedded-sand test and water-lift measurement support a credible case for carpet maintenance.
  • Very good long-hair resistance: Vacuum Wars recorded no hair wrap in its test, and the Motorbar uses an active hair-removal design.
  • Useful information on the LCD: remaining-runtime estimates and maintenance alerts are more helpful than a simple battery light.
  • Handheld conversion: the crevice, combination, and Hair Screw tools make it useful for stairs, upholstery, vehicles, and furniture.
  • Washable filter: the standard dry model does not require recurring vacuum bags.
  • Removable battery: replacement or spare-battery options may extend ownership, provided the part is an exact, safe match.

The drawbacks that should affect your decision

Small bin

A small dust compartment is manageable in an apartment but frustrating in a home with pets, children, tracked-in dirt, or frequent projects. You may need to empty it during a single whole-home cleaning session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short high-power runtime

The headline runtime describes a low-power condition. With the Motorbar head in Boost, RTINGS measured less than 10 minutes. The V9 is better suited to cleaning in passes than to running continuously at maximum power through a large house.

Trigger operation

The V9 runs while you hold its trigger. This saves power when you pause, but it is not ideal for users with hand pain or anyone who prefers pressing a button once and vacuuming without maintaining pressure.

No automatic suction adjustment or standard soft roller

The V9 does not automatically sense the floor and adjust suction. The standard Motorbar also lacks the dedicated soft-roller head some hard-floor buyers expect at this price level.

Plastic construction and one test-unit concern

RTINGS described the construction as mostly plastic and reported that its test unit developed a broken dust-bin seal; some click connections also loosened over time. That is evidence from one tested unit, not proof of a widespread failure rate. It is nevertheless a reason to inspect the bin seal, wand, floor-head connection, and accessory latches during the return period.

Is the Dyson V9 worth buying at different prices?

TechRadar reported a $599.99 list price and historical discounts to $349.99 and, in one case, as low as $269.99. Vacuum Wars described a selling price around $390 during its review. These are historical research figures, not a current price guarantee.

Price range Verdict
About $250–$300 Potentially worthwhile if you specifically want a light Dyson, especially for an apartment, stairs, quick cleaning, or a mostly carpeted home. Verify the seller, warranty, condition, and accessories.
About $300–$400 A conditional buy. Compare newer Dyson and competing cordless models, especially if hard-floor pickup, edge cleaning, or runtime matters more than low weight.
Near $600 Generally hard to recommend for the standard Motorbar. The ergonomics may justify it for a narrow group, but the small bin, short Boost runtime, and mediocre bare-floor results limit its value.

If you are shopping now, the Dyson V9 Motorbar cordless vacuum is worth considering only after confirming that the listing is genuinely the Motorbar configuration and that the price is substantially below its reported list price. Do not assume an old review’s retailer link still has the same model, warranty, or accessories.

Who should buy it?

The V9 Motorbar makes the most sense for:

  • Apartment residents and owners of smaller homes
  • People who prioritize a light vacuum over maximum power
  • Users cleaning stairs, vehicles, furniture, and short-pile or ordinary high-pile carpet
  • Households dealing with long hair that commonly wraps around brush rolls
  • Buyers who find heavier cordless vacuums difficult to lift or maneuver

Who should skip it?

Choose another vacuum—or use a separate machine—if you need:

Ownership and maintenance checklist

  1. Confirm the model: Motorbar and Submarine manuals and accessories are different. Check the exact model number and package contents.
  2. Inspect the bin and connections: Look for a secure dust-bin seal, a firm wand connection, and floor-head and tool latches that do not loosen during use.
  3. Empty the bin frequently: Do not wait until heavy debris reaches the filter or airflow path.
  4. Wash and dry the filter correctly: Use the instructions for your regional model. A washable filter must be completely dry before reinstallation.
  5. Protect the battery: Use the supplied charger or a verified replacement and stop using a battery that is swollen, damaged, unusually hot, or physically compromised.
  6. Check replacement parts carefully: A listing described as “V9-compatible” may not fit every regional model. Match the model number, voltage, connector, and return policy before buying a battery, filter, charger, dock, brush bar, or tool.
  7. For the Submarine: Follow the wet roller’s water and dirty-water maintenance instructions. Wet-cleaning capability adds upkeep; leaving a damp roller or dirty tank unattended can create odor and hygiene problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Dyson V9 the same as the Dyson V8?

No. The V9 was introduced in 2025 and was positioned between the V8 and V11. It is a separate model family, even though the V8 is an older and sometimes less expensive alternative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Dyson V9 come with a wet-cleaning head?

No. The standard V9 Motorbar is a dry vacuum. The V9 Submarine Extra adds a wet roller and additional accessories, but it also requires more maintenance.

How long does the Dyson V9 battery last?

Dyson lists up to 40 minutes, but that is a low-power maximum. RTINGS measured nearly an hour in Eco and less than 10 minutes with the Motorbar head in Boost. Actual runtime depends on the power setting, tool, floor head, battery condition, and cleaning conditions.

Is the Dyson V9 officially a HEPA vacuum?

Do not assume that every V9 configuration is officially HEPA-certified. Dyson markets sealed filtration, and RTINGS measured very high particle capture on its tested unit, but RTINGS noted that Dyson does not officially label the tested Motorbar filter as HEPA.

Can I use the Dyson V9 for sawdust or drywall dust?

It is not an appropriate primary construction vacuum. Large quantities of fine construction dust can load the filter and create a difficult-to-empty mess. Use a suitable wet/dry shop vacuum and reserve the V9 for light cleanup in finished spaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is a reasonable price for the Dyson V9 Motorbar?

Based on the researched historical prices, roughly $250–$300 is the strongest buying range, $300–$400 is conditional, and near the reported $599.99 list price is generally difficult to justify. Check current inventory and seller details before relying on any price.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: buy the Dyson V9 Motorbar at a substantial discount if you want a particularly light cordless vacuum for carpet maintenance, stairs, apartments, and quick cleanups. Skip it at or near full list price, and look elsewhere if your priorities are hard-floor perfection, large debris, long runtime, large capacity, or construction-site cleanup. The V9 Submarine Extra is worth considering only when wet-and-dry floor cleaning is the specific goal and you accept the additional maintenance.
