Fold it into a standing Christmas tree, a pocket for cutlery, a pouch for a menu, or a bow secured with a napkin ring. These 14 ideas cover both useful folds—especially the envelope, diamond pocket, and buffet pouch—and decorative shapes such as stars, poinsettias, roses, elf hats, and elf shoes.
For the best results, start with a square dinner napkin. A pressed 20-by-20-inch linen napkin is a reliable size for the Christmas tree fold, while cotton and polyester are generally easier choices for structured designs than slippery satin or sequined fabric. Press or steam the napkins before you begin, and keep a few napkin rings nearby for folds that need extra support.
Before you fold: choose the right napkin
Square dinner napkins are the safest all-purpose choice because their even sides make layered and symmetrical folds easier. A 20-by-20-inch napkin works particularly well for the standing Christmas tree. Cotton and linen provide a classic textured look; polyester can hold novelty shapes and crisp edges well; paper napkins are useful for casual gatherings or large parties.
Very fluid satin, taffeta, or sequined napkins can look festive, but they are less cooperative for detailed folds. Reserve them for loose fans, bows, or flat arrangements. If a design depends on points, petals, or a standing silhouette, choose fabric with some body.

- Tuck the layers upward so the napkin forms a standing, tiered tree.

A bow is especially effective on a gift-inspired table. Red cloth and a metallic ring create the most literal Christmas look, but emerald, burgundy, ivory, velvet, and tartan are just as appealing.
- Fold the napkin into a long, narrow strip.
- Shape the ends into loops or bow tails.
- Gather the middle and slide a napkin ring over the center to hold it.
Best for: Red-and-gold tables, gift-themed settings, and children’s meals. Difficulty: Easy to moderate.
Use a contrasting ring so the center is clearly defined. A ring is not merely decorative here; it keeps the bow from relaxing during setup.
3. Star napkin
A multi-point star brings a celestial look to Christmas Eve, a silver-and-white dinner, or a New Year’s table. It can be folded as a raised shape or arranged flat as a graphic accent on the plate.

- Fold and pleat it into evenly spaced points.
- Arrange the pleats radially so the points create a star silhouette.
- Set it flat on the plate or secure the center if you want a more dimensional arrangement.
Best for: Modern, celestial, silver, white, or formal holiday tables. Difficulty: Moderate to advanced.
Avoid very slippery satin unless you plan to secure the center. Even pleats and a firm fabric make the star easier to recognize.
4. Gift-box napkin
Fold the napkin into a compact, package-like square and add a narrow ribbon, a decorative ring, or a small tag. The finished shape works particularly well when each place setting is meant to echo the presents under the tree.
- Fold the square into a compact layered package shape.
- Smooth the edges so the form reads as a square rather than a loose bundle.
- Add a narrow ribbon, napkin ring, or name tag across the top.
Best for: Present-themed tables and children’s place settings. Difficulty: Moderate.

The finishing piece is important: a ribbon or ring helps the shape look like a gift even when the fabric’s folds are subtle.
5. Envelope napkin
If you want decoration with a practical purpose, choose the envelope. Its flat pocket can hold a printed menu, place card, handwritten note, cutlery, or a small sprig of greenery.

- Arrange the front layers to create a clean, flat pocket.
- Slide the menu, card, utensils, or other small item into the opening.
Best for: Formal dinners, weddings, buffets, and personalized place settings. Difficulty: Easy.
Keep the insert relatively flat and light. A thick bundle of cutlery or a bulky favor can distort the envelope and make the place setting look crowded.

The poinsettia fold gives a traditional red-and-green table a floral focal point without requiring a vase. It also works in ivory or deep burgundy for a less literal interpretation.
- Fold the napkin’s corners toward the center.
- Turn it over while holding the layers in place.
- Pull the layers back to form petal-like points.
- Add greenery, a small ornament, bell, or bow at the center.
Best for: Traditional Christmas tables. Difficulty: Moderate.
Cotton or linen with some body will hold the petals more reliably than a fluid fabric. Work on a flat surface so the layers stay aligned as you turn the napkin.
7. Rose napkin
A rose is a softer, more refined option for Christmas Eve, a winter wedding, or a romantic dinner. Ivory, blush, dusty rose, and deep red make the floral outline particularly clear.
- Fold the napkin diagonally into a triangle.
- Roll it from the wide edge toward the point.
- Tuck the loose end to keep the roll together.
- Pull down the inner flaps to suggest unfolding petals.
Best for: Winter weddings, date-night entertaining, and floral tables. Difficulty: Easy to moderate.
Place the rose flat on the plate or in a shallow bowl so it does not have to support its own height.
8. Pinwheel napkin
The pinwheel is a graphic, energetic fold that suits contemporary tables and colorful holiday schemes. It photographs best when the napkin contrasts with the plate beneath it.

- Arrange the pleated strip into a radial pinwheel.
- Secure the center with a small ring if the pleats do not stay in place.
- Set the finished shape flat on the plate.
Best for: Contemporary tables, children’s parties, and bright color palettes. Difficulty: Moderate.
9. Fan napkin
The fan is a classic presentation that can be repeated quickly across a large table. Use ivory for a formal dinner, jewel tones for a festive setting, or a metallic fabric for extra shimmer.
- Accordion-fold the napkin from one edge to the other.
- Spread the pleats into a fan.
- Stand the fan in a glass or secure its base with a napkin ring if it will not remain upright.
Best for: Formal place settings, buffets, and large-scale setup. Difficulty: Easy.
Consistent pleat width matters more than elaborate technique. Fold the first napkin carefully, then use it as a visual guide for the rest.
10. Diamond pocket
The diamond pocket is a useful alternative to the envelope. Its diagonal opening adds movement while still giving you room for flatware, a menu, a place card, herbs, or a small favor.
- Fold the square napkin into a diamond-oriented layered shape.
- Arrange the upper layers to create a diagonal pouch.
- Slide the chosen item into the opening without overfilling it.
Best for: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and dinner parties where silverware is placed on the plate. Difficulty: Easy to moderate.
Use the diagonal line as part of the design: place a rosemary sprig, name card, or narrow menu so it follows the direction of the opening.
11. Buffet pouch
The buffet pouch is the strongest choice when organization matters as much as appearance. It creates built-in storage for a menu, place card, single flower, or utensils, making it useful for receptions and large holiday gatherings.
- Press the napkin before folding; optional starch can make the pouch crisper.
- Fold the layers into a structured pouch with a defined opening.
- Place the menu, card, flower, or utensils inside.
- Iron or reshape the completed fold if the fabric needs sharper edges.
Best for: Buffets, receptions, and large holiday gatherings. Difficulty: Moderate.

Because it combines decoration and storage, this is a particularly efficient fold for hosts who are setting many places at once.
12. Crown napkin
Arrange multiple folded points upward to create a crown-like silhouette. It gives a playful, jewel-toned table a little ceremony and is easy to adapt for a child’s holiday place setting.
- Fold the napkin into several layered points.
- Open and arrange the points so they rise around the center.
- Adjust the base until the crown sits securely on the plate.
Best for: Playful Christmas tables, children’s dinners, and royal or jewel-toned themes. Difficulty: Moderate.
A stiffer napkin or a light application of starch helps the points remain upright. If the fabric collapses, use a discreet ring or place the crown inside a shallow bowl.

13. Elf-hat napkin
A pointed elf hat immediately signals a whimsical Christmas theme. Green, red, and striped napkins make the outline clear, while a contrasting ring or small pom-pom-like accent completes the look.
- Shape the napkin into a pointed cone or hat.
- Smooth the sides so the point is visible.
- Add a contrasting ring or small accent near the top or base.
Best for: Family dinners, children’s parties, and playful Christmas tables. Difficulty: Easy to moderate.
Do not make the cone too tall for the plate or place setting. A shorter, stable hat is easier for guests to move when dinner begins.

How to make any holiday napkin fold look better
Press before you start
Sharp creases are the foundation of trees, stars, crowns, pouches, and fans. Use an iron or fabric steamer before folding. For especially crisp geometry, optional spray starch can help the fabric hold its shape. Always follow the care instructions for the napkin material.
Match the fold to the table’s purpose
- Need storage? Choose the envelope, diamond pocket, or buffet pouch.
- Want a centerpiece-like shape? Try the tree, poinsettia, star, crown, or fan.
- Setting a child-friendly table? Use the bow, gift box, elf hat, or elf shoe.
- Planning a formal dinner? Choose the rose, envelope, diamond pocket, or a restrained fan.
Use accessories as structure, not clutter
Napkin rings are most useful when they solve a problem: they hold the center of a bow, anchor a fan, or keep a loose decorative fold intact. They also add an easy finish in metal, wood, berry, or bell designs. Keep the rest of the place setting quieter when the napkin itself is elaborate.
Coordinate color and texture
Traditional red, green, and ivory support trees and poinsettias. Burgundy, tartan, and metallic accents create a richer holiday palette. Sage, forest green, natural linen, and wood tones suit a woodland table. Silver, white, and cool gray make stars and pinwheels feel more modern. If the plate is patterned, choose a solid napkin so the fold remains visible.
Add one small finishing detail
A paper star, handwritten place card, rosemary sprig, tiny ornament, ribbon, bell, or small bow can clarify the theme. Use only one or two accents per place setting; too many additions can hide the fold and leave guests with nowhere to put the napkin.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size napkin is best for folding?
A square dinner napkin is the most versatile choice. A 20-by-20-inch square linen napkin is specifically suitable for the standing Christmas tree, while similar square cotton or polyester napkins can be used for most of the other folds.
Should napkins be starched before folding?
Not always. Pressing or steaming is usually the first step. Optional spray starch can help structured designs such as trees, buffet pouches, crowns, and fans hold their edges, but follow the fabric’s care instructions.

Which napkin folds are most useful rather than decorative?
The envelope, diamond pocket, and buffet pouch create storage for menus, place cards, cutlery, herbs, or small favors. They are the best choices when the napkin needs to organize the place setting.
What fabric is easiest for holiday napkin folding?
Cotton and polyester are generally practical for simple and intricate folds because they can hold creases. Linen also gives an attractive structured look. Satin, taffeta, sequins, and other slippery or fluid materials are better suited to loose folds unless you secure them.
The Bottom Line
Choose the fold according to what your table needs: use an envelope, diamond pocket, or buffet pouch for function; a tree, poinsettia, star, or rose for a decorative focal point; and a bow, fan, crown, elf hat, or elf shoe for a faster or more playful finish. Press the napkins first, use a square shape with some body, and let one small accessory—such as a place card, ring, or paper star—complete the setting.
