Daikin Australia lists 18°C as the low end of its cooling range, while Frigidaire gives a 60°F–90°F (about 16°C–32°C) range for room air conditioners and says settings vary by model. Check your unit’s controls and owner’s manual for its actual range.
What does the coldest temperature setting mean?
The thermostat setting, or setpoint, is the temperature you want the room to reach. It is not the temperature of the air coming out of the vent, nor a guarantee that the room will reach that temperature. Frigidaire distinguishes the target from the room’s actual temperature, and the Government of India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency explains that the thermostat checks room air and stops the compressor when the target is reached.
So selecting 18°C does not mean the unit immediately blows colder air than it would with a 24°C setting. It means the system is being asked to continue cooling until the room reaches a lower target, if it has enough capacity and conditions allow it.
Does a lower setting cool the room faster?
No. Choosing a colder setpoint generally does not make an air conditioner cool the room faster; it makes the system run longer before stopping. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s 2018 FAQ says the compressor works longer at a lower target, and Goodman likewise advises that setting an extreme-cold target does not speed cooling.

For Indian consumers, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency estimated in its 2018 FAQ that each 1°C increase in the setpoint can save about 6% electricity, and that changing a setting from 20°C to 24°C could save an estimated 24%. These are estimates, not guaranteed results for an individual home; actual savings depend on the equipment, building, weather, humidity, and electricity costs.
What temperature should you set?
Choose the warmest setting that remains comfortable rather than automatically using the lowest number. The guidance below reflects different sources and contexts, not one universal requirement.

Outdoor operating limits are separate from the indoor thermostat setting and vary by model. GE Appliances says not to use its room air conditioners when outdoor temperatures are below 50°F because capacity is limited and the indoor coil could ice; it warns that below 32°F ice may develop and lock the fan motor. This is GE’s guidance for its room air conditioners, not a general operating limit for all room or central systems. Follow the manual for the exact unit.

How to choose and check a setting
- Find the model’s range. Check the unit’s controls and owner’s manual; model and market determine the selectable minimum.
- Pick a comfortable target. Start with a moderate setting such as the guidance above, then adjust based on comfort rather than choosing the lowest setting by default.
- Check the actual room temperature if needed. A thermostat reading, built-in display, or optional indoor room thermometer can help you compare the room with the setpoint.
- Investigate persistent problems. If the system cannot approach its target, short-cycles, or appears faulty, the issue may require troubleshooting for the specific unit rather than a colder thermostat setting.
