It describes particle size, not quality. A loam can still be low in nutrients, poorly drained, or compacted, and a dark, crumbly soil is not automatically loam.
What loam is made of
Sand, silt, and clay are mineral particle groups separated by size. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) gives the following diameter ranges in its Soil Factors Handouts:
| Particle group | Diameter (NRCS range) |
|---|---|
| Sand | 2.0 to 0.05 mm |
| Silt | 0.050 to 0.002 mm |
| Clay | 0.002 mm or smaller |
Loam combines all three groups. Its class comes from the measured proportions of sand, silt, and clay, not from the word on a product label. The NRCS handout states the principle in one sentence: “Loam is a combination of sand, silt, and clay.” (USDA NRCS, Soil Factors Handouts)
Particle-size definitions can change with the classification context. The USDA APHIS table of soil textures and particle sizes (drawing on Soil Science Society of America definitions, 2011) cautions against substituting a family particle-size class for the familiar textural class, so keep the two separate when reading technical references. (USDA APHIS, Table III-47)

How the texture class is determined
There is no single recipe for loam. Texture classes are assigned from the proportions of sand, silt, and clay plotted on a soil-texture triangle. If you know the percentages, use a valid classification chart or calculator rather than estimating by eye.
- Obtain the sand, silt, and clay percentages from a laboratory report or a texture test kit.
- Enter the three values into the NRCS Soil Texture Calculator, which classifies a point from known percentages.
- Read the class the calculator returns, and check it against the texture triangle if you are working from a published chart.
A home texture test kit can estimate the texture class, but the sources used for this guide do not establish how accurate any particular consumer kit is, so treat a kit result as an estimate. (USDA NRCS, Soil Texture Calculator; USDA NRCS, Soil Quality Test Kit Guide)

What texture changes in practice
The USDA soil-quality guidance says texture influences fertility and helps determine four things: water intake, water storage, ease of tillage, and aeration. It gives a clear contrast: clay soils retain more water and nutrients than sandy soils. Loam is best understood as a balance among these behaviours, not as a guarantee of any one of them.
- Water intake and storage: texture governs how quickly water enters the soil and how much it holds.
- Tillage: texture affects how easily the soil can be worked.
- Aeration: texture affects the air spaces available to roots.

What a loam label does not tell you
A texture result is not a complete soil diagnosis. The cited texture material addresses particle proportions and texture-related behaviour only. It does not tell you whether a soil suits a particular plant on these points:

The USDA NRCS Soil Judging Manual distinguishes the technical texture meaning of loam from the “loam” that landscapers sell for lawns and gardens. (USDA NRCS, Soil Judging Manual) A bag or bulk delivery labelled loam may not match the technical class. Read the product description and composition, and do not assume that the label confirms a particular sand, silt, and clay balance.
