Matter is an open smart-home standard that lets compatible devices communicate with participating platforms such as Apple Home and Google Home over a home’s IP network. It is designed to make cross-platform setup and control easier, but it is not an app, a wireless network, or a promise that every feature works in every ecosystem.

What Matter is—and what it is not

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) maintains Matter, a shared standard for communication between compatible smart-home devices and platforms. Matter works over IP networking, using Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. Bluetooth Low Energy is commonly used during setup, rather than for routine device control. CSA’s Matter overview explains the standard and its purpose.

Matter is not a smart-home app or a radio protocol of its own. A Matter smart plug, for example, may be controllable from more than one participating platform, but its connection may use Wi-Fi or Thread. The logo alone does not tell you which network it uses or which of its functions a particular app supports.

How Matter works in a home

Control over the local network

Matter devices communicate across the home’s IP network. Commands can travel locally between the controller and accessory instead of always passing through a manufacturer’s cloud, which can improve responsiveness and reliability. This does not mean every product works entirely offline: makers may use cloud services for remote access or extra features. Remote control generally requires an internet-connected controller or hub at home. The CSA Matter FAQ and Google’s Matter guidance describe these network and cloud distinctions.

Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread

Wi-Fi and Ethernet can carry Matter traffic over the home network. Thread is a low-power, IP-based mesh network intended for compatible devices. Thread devices can relay traffic for one another, while a Thread border router connects the Thread network to the broader home network. Apple’s smart-home developer information describes Thread’s role.

Thread is optional: a Wi-Fi-only Matter setup does not automatically need a Thread border router. If you add Thread devices, however, you need compatible Thread infrastructure. In a home with both Thread and Wi-Fi Matter devices, confirm that your controller or another device can also act as a Thread border router. Google also says IPv6 must be enabled for Matter to work properly in its setup guidance. Check your router and platform requirements if a device will not commission. Google’s setup guidance lists its requirements and supported hub classes.

Setup and commissioning

Conventional Matter setup commonly begins with a QR code or numeric setup code. Bluetooth Low Energy helps with onboarding; the accessory is then provisioned onto Wi-Fi or Thread as appropriate. Apple’s setup flow asks for permission and guides the accessory onto the network. Matter 1.6 adds NFC commissioning, which can allow setup by tapping an NFC-capable device, including when the accessory is not yet powered on. Availability depends on device and platform makers implementing the newer specification. Apple’s instructions for adding Matter accessories explain its pairing flow.

Does Matter work with Apple Home?

Yes. Apple supports Matter in its home software, including iOS 16.1 and later; Apple also lists support in iPadOS 16.1, macOS Ventura, watchOS 9.1, tvOS 16.1, and HomePod software 16.1. Pairing uses a setup code and Apple’s network-provisioning flow. Compatibility still depends on the specific accessory, Apple’s current platform support, and which device functions the manufacturer exposes. A Matter certification does not mean every feature will appear in Apple Home. Apple’s Matter accessory support page provides current setup details.

Can you control a Matter device from more than one ecosystem?

Often, yes. Matter’s multi-admin capability lets a compatible accessory be added to more than one Matter-enabled platform, subject to the accessory and platform’s actual support. That can let a household use a device through more than one app rather than choosing a single ecosystem for all control. It does not guarantee identical controls, automations, or feature support across those apps. Google describes control through multiple Matter-certified apps, including Google Home and Apple Home, in its Matter support information.

Do you need a Matter hub or Thread border router?

That depends on the platform, accessory, and network type. Some Matter setups need a compatible controller or hub for setup and control. A Thread border router is needed for Thread devices, but not simply because a device is Matter-certified: a Wi-Fi-only Matter accessory does not inherently require Thread infrastructure. For remote control, the in-home controller or hub generally needs internet access.

  • [Local Automation for Reliable Performance] Supports local execution of automations for Zigbee and Matter devices, ensuring smooth operation even without Wi-Fi or cloud access. Enjoy millisecond response times for a more stable and reliable smart home experience. (Some automation, such as cloud push notifications, will still require the cloud connection to be executed.)

Before buying, check the platform’s current list of supported controllers and whether a device uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. A device described as a “Matter controller” and one described as a “Thread border router” perform distinct roles, even if one product can perform both. Google’s current Matter guidance lists supported hub classes and explains the Thread requirement.

Will Zigbee or existing smart-home devices work with Matter?

Zigbee and Matter are different protocols; Matter does not natively control Zigbee devices. Although Zigbee and Thread use the same underlying 802.15.4 radio technology, that does not make them interchangeable. A compatible bridge can expose supported Zigbee devices to a Matter ecosystem, but the devices remain Zigbee devices, and the bridge maker determines which features are available through Matter. Some existing products may receive Matter through a firmware update, but that depends on the hardware’s capability and the manufacturer’s decision. The CSA Matter FAQ explains protocol bridging and device updates.

How to check whether a Matter device will suit your setup

  1. Check the exact device and features. Confirm that the product is Matter-certified and that the functions you need are supported by the manufacturer and your chosen app. Certification alone does not settle feature availability.
  2. Confirm the platform. Check current compatibility information for Apple Home, Google Home, or the ecosystem you use. Support lists and product implementations can change.
  3. Identify its network. Look for Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread rather than assuming all Matter products connect the same way.
  4. Check your home infrastructure. Determine whether your platform needs a Matter controller and, for Thread devices, whether you have a compatible Thread border router. Confirm that IPv6 is enabled where required.
  5. Ask about upgrades or bridges. For an existing device, verify that its maker has committed to a firmware update. For Zigbee, check which features a proposed bridge exposes; there is no automatic conversion to native Matter.
  6. Account for cloud and app needs. Confirm whether setup, remote access, or manufacturer-specific functions require the vendor’s app, an internet connection, or a cloud account.

What Matter versions have added

The specification changes over time, but product support does not arrive automatically with a release. The CSA says manufacturers and platforms choose their implementation timelines. The following are useful milestones, not a guarantee that a product you can buy today supports every feature listed. The CSA newsroom identifies Matter 1.6, announced June 17, 2026, as the latest release found as of October 4, 2026.

What Matter means when choosing a smart-home accessory

Matter can make a compatible accessory easier to use across participating ecosystems, especially if you want flexibility about which app or platform controls it. It does not eliminate the need to check the connection type, controller and Thread requirements, supported device functions, or the maker’s approach to cloud services and updates. For a simple example such as a Matter smart plug, verify its certification, the platforms it supports, and whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread before choosing it.

As a measure of adoption, the CSA said in its November 7, 2024 release that Matter products were in millions of homes around the world since the standard’s 2022 launch. That is the Alliance’s own statement, not an independent market survey. CSA’s Matter 1.4 announcement.
