Plan the route before you hang anything
Walk around the house and decide which eaves, gutters, or trim you want to outline. Note where the lights will plug in and whether each section can be reached without unsafe climbing. Measure the route and plan connections according to the light maker’s instructions; the number of strands that can be connected varies by product.

- Choose a simple route that avoids crossing doors, busy walkways, lawns, or heating equipment with cords.
- Check that the planned lights and any extension cord can reach the outlet without tension or improvised connections.
- If a high section cannot be reached safely, plan to omit it or arrange qualified help.
Choose outdoor-rated lights and inspect them
Use light strings whose labels specifically say they are suitable for outdoor use. In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises choosing lights tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory and following the product instructions. CPSC seasonal-lighting guidance discusses observable safety features in relation to UL 588, 18th Edition; that guidance does not mean CPSC itself certifies products. Before hanging new or stored lights, check the entire strand. Do not use it if it has broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wire, or loose connections; discard damaged sets rather than trying to repair them for outdoor use. CPSC’s inspection advice identifies these warning signs.

Use clips that fit the house and the light strand
For a no-nail installation, use outdoor Christmas light clips or hooks designed for the surface and the wire or bulb style. A clip intended for a gutter lip may not fit a shingle edge, fascia, or other trim. Compare the clip’s stated surface and light compatibility, how it installs and removes, and whether it is intended for outdoor use; there is no universal clip that suits every roofline.
Follow the clip maker’s directions and support the strand without piercing, pinching, or crushing its wire. Do not drive nails or staples through or into a light cord: they can damage insulation and create an electrical hazard. The National Park Service recommends clips, while CPS Energy’s holiday safety guidance warns against nails and staples.

Protect the power connection and route cords carefully
For an outdoor display in the United States, use a GFCI-protected outdoor receptacle or a portable GFCI. Check any extension cord for damage and confirm that its rating suits the intended use and the light manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid overloaded outlets, and do not assume one strand-count limit applies to every product. Follow the specific light and cord directions. - Unplug the display before leaving home or going to bed, as recommended by the National Park Service.
Outdoor-rated lights are made for outdoor use, but that label is not permission to ignore product instructions or use damaged equipment. Check the light set’s directions for its specific conditions of use.

Hang only what you can reach safely
Work from the ground where possible and stop when a location would require standing on a chair, leaning too far, or making an uncertain ladder setup. Keep ladders away from power lines. CPSC’s December 6, 2017 holiday release urged caution when using a ladder or chair; CPS Energy separately warns to keep ladders away from power lines. Neither source provides a complete ladder or roof-work procedure, so this guide does not treat roof access as routine.
If the remaining roofline cannot be reached safely with appropriate equipment and a suitable setup, leave it unlit or consider a qualified local installer. When comparing service quotes, ask what access equipment and installation work are included, whether removal and storage are included, and what qualifications and insurance the installer carries. These are practical comparison questions, not a verified endorsement of any provider.

Remove and store the lights without damaging them
Unplug the lights before removal. Take clips off according to their directions, then coil and store strands so they are not kinked or crushed. Inspect the set again before using it next season and discard it if damage is present.
Why the precautions matter
In a December 6, 2017 release, CPSC estimated 14,700 holiday-decoration-related emergency-room-treated injuries nationwide during the preceding holiday season and said falls accounted for 41% of those incidents. These are historical estimates, not current 2026 figures. Separately, the National Park Service page, last updated December 15, 2022, attributes to the National Fire Protection Association an estimate of about 790 U.S. home fires annually from holiday decorations excluding trees; the page does not state the NFPA estimate’s publication year. These figures provide context for careful decorating, not a prediction that a properly installed light strand will cause an injury or fire.
