GSM in zinc coating means grams per square metre (g/m²): the mass of zinc coating on a given area. For galvanized steel sheet, a designation such as Z275 usually refers to a specified minimum coating mass across both faces combined—not 275 g/m² on each face. GSM measures mass, not thickness; converting it to micrometres requires assumptions about coating density and composition.

What GSM tells you about a zinc coating

GSM is shorthand for grams per square metre, written as g/m². It describes coating mass per unit of surface area. ISO 1461:2022 uses g/m² to express galvanized coating mass on fabricated iron and steel articles. The same unit is used in standards for other product forms, including steel wire, but those standards are not interchangeable: the applicable requirements depend on whether the product is sheet, a fabricated article or wire.

In construction, the distinction matters when reading a material specification or checking a delivery. A coating-mass designation describes how much coating is present under the standard’s stated test and acceptance basis. It does not directly say how thick the coating is at every point, nor does it by itself establish a guaranteed service life.

What do Z180 and Z275 mean?

For galvanized steel sheet, ASTM A653/A653M uses Z designations for coating mass. The figures below explain the requirements in the historical A653/A653M-09 table; they are not a substitute for checking the edition specified by a contract or applicable in a jurisdiction. In that edition, the designation is based on the minimum triple-spot coating mass total for both sides.

Designation Triple-spot minimum, both sides total One-side figure in the table Single-spot minimum, both sides total
Z180 180 g/m² 60 g/m² 150 g/m²
Z275 275 g/m² 94 g/m² 235 g/m²

These figures come from ASTM A653/A653M-09. “Both sides total” means the mass on the two faces is combined for the designated total. It must not be read as the amount required on each face. The standard also gives separate one-side and single-spot values, so a comparison is meaningful only when the same acceptance basis is being used. ASTM A653/A653M-09 coating requirements.

Before accepting a quoted Z value, confirm the product form, governing specification and edition, whether the figure is a two-side total or a one-side requirement, and whether acceptance is based on single-spot or triple-spot results. For current procurement or compliance, use the edition and requirements named in the contract rather than assuming the 2009 table remains controlling.

How GSM relates to micrometres

GSM and micrometres (μm) describe different properties: GSM is mass per area, while micrometres measure thickness. They can be related only by assuming a density and a coating composition. The IFRC/ICRC catalogue uses a zinc density of 7.14 g/cm³, giving this approximate relationship:

1 μm of zinc ≈ 7.14 g/m²

Using that assumption, a 20 μm one-side thickness reading corresponds to about 135.66 g/m² on that side. This is a density-based estimate, not a universal conversion or a way to certify a coating designation. Alloy composition, how the specification treats one or both faces, and the measurement method affect interpretation. IFRC/ICRC galvanization thickness gauge catalogue.

How galvanized coating mass and thickness are measured

Coating-mass testing

ASTM A90/A90M-21 covers procedures for determining coating mass on steel sheet, wire and other iron or steel articles with zinc or zinc-alloy coatings. Depending on the product requirements, sheet results may be reported as a total for both sides or separately for each side. The method can give average coating mass over an area, from which an average thickness can be calculated. The governing product specification determines sampling frequency, location, orientation and reporting requirements; a mass test is therefore not just a matter of comparing one isolated reading with a designation. ASTM A90/A90M-21.

Nondestructive thickness-gauge readings

ASTM E376-19 describes magnetic and eddy-current methods for nondestructive coating-thickness measurement. A magnetic gauge is designed for a nonmagnetic coating on a magnetic substrate, the relevant combination for zinc on ferromagnetic steel. Gauge choice and accuracy depend on the coating/substrate combination, geometry, calibration, operating conditions, magnetic properties and surface roughness. No one gauge suits every combination. A thickness gauge reports local thickness; by itself, it does not establish coating mass or prove that a coating designation has been met. ASTM E376-19.

Choose the method for the question

  • If the specification or acceptance question is stated in coating mass, use the applicable product standard and a coating-mass method such as ASTM A90/A90M.
  • If you need a nondestructive thickness reading on steel, select and use a gauge appropriate to the coating, substrate and geometry, following the applicable method and calibration requirements.
  • Do not treat a thickness reading converted with an assumed density as equivalent to a standards-based coating-mass acceptance result.

Why coating mass matters—and what it cannot predict

Zinc protects iron and steel through sacrificial loss: the zinc corrodes in preference to the steel. ASTM A90/A90M-21 states that the degree of protection is proportional to the mass of zinc coating. That relationship makes coating mass relevant, but it does not provide a universal number of service years. Exposure conditions and the particular installation matter, so a coating designation alone cannot support a reliable lifespan promise.
