Fish amino acid (FAA) fertilizer is a liquid plant input made from fish or fish-processing residues. Traditional FAA is commonly produced by fermenting fish with sugar or molasses, but the name does not identify a standardized formula. It is important to distinguish that homemade or traditionally fermented input from manufactured fish protein hydrolysates, which may be made using enzymes; the products are fish-derived, but they are not automatically interchangeable.

What does fish amino acid fertilizer contain?

Its composition depends on the fish material and processing method. The term “FAA” alone does not tell you the product’s nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, salt, or trace-metal content. Fish-derived liquids can supply nitrogen while providing relatively little phosphorus or potassium, so they should not be assumed to meet all a crop’s nutrient needs.

Fish amino acid fertilizer is also not a catch-all name for every fish-based garden product. Traditional fermented FAA, fish emulsion, and manufactured fish protein hydrolysate can refer to different preparations. The 2020 review of fish by-product biostimulants describes fish protein hydrolysates as sources of proteins, fats, amino acids, and peptides, but that description should not be treated as a guaranteed analysis for every product. 2020 review of fish by-product biostimulants

How is traditional FAA made?

One documented method appears in a JICA vegetable-production manual: chop, grind, or pound fish material, then mix one part fish with one part muscovado sugar. Ferment it for 15–30 days, mixing every five days, then strain and store the liquid. This is an example of a traditional preparation, not a universal recipe or quality specification. Commercial products may use other raw materials and processes. For a fish amino acid fertilizer or fish hydrolysate fertilizer, check the product identity, guaranteed nutrient analysis, source information, and directions rather than assuming it matches a homemade fermented batch.

What can it do for plants?

Studies report improved growth measures in some crops, but results depend on the crop, preparation, concentration, application route, and growing conditions. The 2020 review also describes inconsistent outcomes, including studies in which an animal-derived biostimulant produced no benefit or reduced plant weight. That evidence supports treating fish-derived inputs as formulation-specific products, not as a guaranteed growth boost. Review of fish by-product biostimulants

Examples from crop studies

  • A lettuce growth-chamber study summarized in the review used fish protein hydrolysate as a drench at 3 mL/L at transplanting and again on days 14 and 24. The study reported increases in leaf number, stem diameter, shoot fresh and dry mass, and root dry mass. These are results from that particular setup, not a general application rate. Lettuce study summarized in the review
  • A 2021 Universiti Teknologi MARA thesis tested fermented FAA made from 1 kg fresh fish and 1 kg molasses on kailan. Among the foliar treatments tested, the thesis reported the strongest results for several measured traits with 300 mL FAA mixed with 1 L distilled water. That treatment is specific to the crop and experiment and should not be copied as a general garden dilution. Universiti Teknologi MARA thesis
  • A 2026 Scientific Reports study tested liquid organic fertilizer made from fermented carp waste on spinach in pots over 60 days. The authors reported growth and pigment improvements, particularly at higher treatments, and trace-metal levels within safe consumption limits for the materials and conditions studied. The article page records a correction published July 9, 2026; consult the corrected version for detailed findings. This single pot study does not establish safety for all fish waste or homemade batches. 2026 spinach study and correction

How should it be applied?

Use the directions for the specific product and crop. Published examples differ in both dilution and method: the JICA manual gives 5–10 mL per liter of water for soil application and advises against spraying plants directly, while the kailan thesis evaluated foliar treatments. Neither source establishes a universal dilution or application route. JICA vegetable-production manual Kailan field thesis

  • Check whether the directions specify a soil drench, foliar application, or another method.
  • Follow the stated dilution, timing, crop restrictions, and label precautions; do not transfer a study rate to a different product.
  • Where nutrient needs matter, compare the guaranteed analysis with the crop’s requirements and other fertility inputs.

What soil and safety cautions matter?

Fish-derived fertilizers can vary in nutrient balance and salt content. A 2026 field study of fermented fish-residue liquid fertilizer in tropical sandy soil found elevated nitrogen, electrical conductivity, and sodium but low phosphorus and potassium. At the tested dilutions, the treatment also changed soil pH and measures including exchangeable sodium, calcium, magnesium, and iron. These findings make product analysis, soil type, and application rate relevant; they should not be generalized to every FAA product. 2026 field study of fermented fish-residue fertilizer

Trace-element levels can vary with fish species and origin and with processing. The spinach study’s reported safe-range levels apply to its tested materials and conditions; they do not establish that all fish waste inputs or homemade preparations are safe for food crops. 2026 spinach study

How to compare fish-derived fertilizer products

What to check Why it matters
Product identity and process Traditional fermented FAA, fish emulsion, and manufactured fish protein hydrolysate can describe different products and processing routes. 2020 review 2021 thesis JICA manual
Nutrient analysis Check nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and any listed secondary nutrients, salts, or trace elements; the fish-derived label alone does not establish a complete nutrient profile. 2026 field study
Directions for use Confirm the intended crop, application method, dilution, timing, and restrictions. Instructions in published methods are product- and study-specific. 2021 thesis JICA manual
Source and quality details Look for information about fish source and manufacturing process, along with any certification or local-use requirements that apply to the product.
