Before cutting, mock up the layout with paper templates and check speaker depth, lid clearance, hinges, latches and cable routes. Then choose the amplifier, drivers and battery as a compatible system rather than copying parts from someone else’s build.
Can any old suitcase work?
No. A suitable case needs enough interior volume for the speaker magnets and electronics, enough depth to close without pressing on components, and a shell that can be reinforced where hardware will mount. A documented suitcase build found that its walls could not support the weight of the drivers, so the builder added plywood backing (Analog Devices, June 13, 2013).
Before making holes, create paper templates for the speakers and controls. Place them inside and outside the case to check spacing, then account for the amplifier board, crossovers if needed, battery restraint, wiring, hinges and closure hardware. Leave room to reach the power switch, audio input and charging connection.
Choose a sound system that fits the case
Decide how many drivers the case can reasonably hold and how much complexity you want to manage. A pair of full-range speakers with a compatible stereo amplifier makes a simpler project. A multi-driver arrangement can divide audio across woofers, midrange drivers and tweeters, but requires suitable crossovers and more careful layout.

The 2013 Analog Devices project used two 8-inch woofers, two 3-inch full-range drivers, four 2-inch tweeters and passive crossovers. Its author described the MAX98400A configuration as 20 W per channel in stereo or 40 W in mono. These figures describe that historical amplifier setup, not a general recommendation for a new build. Make: also covered the project’s more elaborate eight-driver, bi-amplified arrangement (Make:, May 13, 2013).
More drivers do not automatically mean better sound. The original builder reported tuning the final system for loudness rather than a more balanced response. Choose drivers for the space and sound you want, and match their impedance and power requirements to the amplifier’s specifications.

Plan the battery, charging and balance
Treat the amplifier, battery and speakers as one electrical and mechanical system. The amplifier determines the acceptable supply voltage and speaker impedance; the battery pack and charger must suit that amplifier and each other. Select battery chemistry, voltage, capacity, protection and charging equipment together, and follow the specifications for the actual parts you buy.
The Analog Devices project used two 12 V UPS lead-acid batteries with a 24 V charger. The article says the specific amplifier’s absolute maximum supply voltage was 28 V and that 24 V was within its operating range. Those values apply to that design only; do not transfer them to another amplifier.

Battery placement affects how the finished case carries. The documented builder placed the battery low and toward the back to counterbalance the speakers, and made a plywood-and-pipe-strap holster to keep it in place. Secure heavy parts so they cannot shift when the case is picked up or moved.
Reinforce the case and mount the components
- Mark the layout. Use the templates to mark speaker openings and control locations. Recheck internal clearance and lid movement before cutting.
- Add structural backing. If the shell flexes or cannot carry the speaker weight, add a stiff backing board such as plywood and fasten the speakers through a supported area.
- Secure the electronics. Mount the amplifier, any crossover boards and battery restraint so they cannot move or rattle. Keep the controls and charging connection accessible.
- Route cables deliberately. Keep wiring away from hinges, latches and edges that could pinch or abrade it when the case closes.
The original build used polyfill as an optional enclosure treatment to help deepen bass and reduce rattling. It is not a substitute for a suitable layout, sturdy mounting or properly secured hardware.

Wire and test before closing the suitcase
Connect the audio input to the amplifier, then connect each amplifier output to its intended speaker. Keep positive and negative speaker leads consistent across the system. The Adafruit Boombox Beach Bag assembly guide demonstrates matching speaker polarity and using heat-shrink tubing to protect soldered connections; it is an adjacent assembly reference, not a power specification for a suitcase build.
- Choose the fuse, wire gauge, switch ratings and battery protection for the actual system; there is no universal value established for every suitcase boombox.
- Check that no loose strand or exposed joint can short against another connection or the case hardware.
- Test audio with the case open. Listen for obvious rattles, check that connections stay secure, and verify that no cable enters the lid’s path.
- Close the case carefully and reopen it to inspect for pinched wires before regular use.
Choose an input—and treat runtime as build-specific
A wired 3.5 mm audio input was used in the documented suitcase project. Its author found that one phone played unusually quietly because of its headphone-jack detection behavior, and describes adding a 32 Ω resistor to ground at the amplifier input as a workaround for that particular setup. This is not a universal fix; first check the source device and amplifier input requirements.

Bluetooth was described as a possible future addition in the 2013 article, not as part of the completed build. To add wireless playback, use an amplifier with an appropriate feature or a compatible Bluetooth receiver and account for its power and mounting needs.
The Analog Devices author reported about five hours of playback at maximum volume from that particular build’s two-battery, 24 V lead-acid setup, with longer runtime at more moderate listening levels. This is a project-specific report, not a runtime estimate for other batteries, amplifiers or listening conditions.
