It is commonly specified for automotive spark-plug boots, bulb sockets, battery terminals, ignition connections, and trailer connectors. It does not conduct electricity or improve the electrical contact between metal terminals; use it only where the equipment maker and the grease manufacturer allow it.
What dielectric grease does
“Dielectric” means electrically insulating. Permatex describes its dielectric grease as a non-conductive lubricant intended to protect electrical connections and wiring from salt, dirt, and corrosion. Applied in an appropriate location, grease can form a barrier around a connection and lubricate compatible surfaces; it is not a substitute for clean, correctly mated metal contacts.

Its protective role is different from that of a conductive contact compound. Do not expect dielectric grease to carry current or to fix a poor connection. Follow the service instructions for the specific connector and product rather than assuming that a particular application method is universal.
Where dielectric grease is used
Spark-plug boots and ignition connections
Permatex and Henkel list spark-plug boots among the applications for their products. Henkel also lists distributor-cap nipples and ignition-coil connectors. Permatex says its grease lubricates rubber, plastic, and ceramic surfaces and helps keep spark-plug boots from fusing to plugs. That is a manufacturer-stated use, not a quantified performance guarantee.

Bulb sockets and vehicle lighting
Permatex lists bulb sockets as an application. Check the vehicle or equipment instructions before applying grease; the product listing does not mean every formula is suitable for every lighting connector or seal.
Battery terminals and trailer connectors
Henkel lists battery terminals and trailer electrical connectors for LOCTITE LB 8423. Those examples are product-specific. Select grease for the actual connector, materials, and service conditions, and follow the equipment maker’s instructions.

Before choosing a grease, check the connector housing, seals, and elastomers against the exact product’s compatibility information. Consider whether its temperature limit suits the operating environment and whether its format allows controlled application. The equipment maker’s service instructions take precedence over general product examples. The available manufacturer information does not establish a universal best format or an independent head-to-head performance ranking.
Check the product’s limits and exclusions
Specifications and chemical restrictions belong to individual formulations, not to dielectric grease as a whole. Permatex says its product is not recommended for pure oxygen or oxygen-rich systems and should not be selected for chlorine or other strong oxidizers. Read the exact product’s technical and safety information and consult the equipment maker’s instructions before use.

Does dielectric grease conduct electricity?
No. It is electrically insulating and should not be used as a conductive contact paste or as a repair for poor metal-to-metal contact.
