How to Read a Measuring Tape: Imperial and Metric Markings

Read the scale that matches your task: combine whole inches with the endpoint fraction, or whole centimeters with the millimeter divisions. Tape markings and special layout symbols vary by model.

Identify the scale first. On an inch scale, read the last whole-inch mark before the endpoint and add the fraction shown by the graduation at the endpoint. On a metric scale, read the last whole centimeter and count the millimeter marks beyond it. Tape layouts and markings vary, so use the lines on your actual tape rather than assuming a particular subdivision.

How to read inches and fractions on a tape measure

  1. Confirm the inch scale. Check the tape’s edge or row; some tapes show inches and metric units together. Whole-inch marks are usually numbered, though foot labels and color conventions vary.
  2. Find the last whole-inch mark before the endpoint. Do not use the nearest printed number alone; the graduation aligned with the endpoint determines the reading.
  3. Identify the fraction between that inch and the next. Longer and shorter lines commonly mark progressively smaller fractions, such as halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths. Many tapes use sixteenths, while some show finer divisions. Check the pattern on your tape.
  4. Combine the whole number and fraction. For example, if the endpoint aligns with the third sixteenth after the 5-inch mark on a tape divided into sixteenths, the measurement is 5 3/16 inches.

For an inch-to-millimeter conversion, use the exact definition 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Conversion changes the unit, not the precision of the measurement; do not report more detail than your reading supports.

How to read centimeters and millimeters

  1. Confirm the metric edge or row.
  2. Read the last full centimeter before the endpoint. On a common metric scale, the longer numbered marks show centimeters.
  3. Count the millimeter divisions from that mark to the endpoint. There are 10 millimeters in 1 centimeter, and the smaller marks between centimeter numbers commonly represent millimeters.
  4. Write the result in the units your project calls for. For example, 20 centimeters plus 6 millimeters is 20.6 cm, or 206 mm. If a drawing or specification uses millimeters, reporting the result entirely in millimeters avoids mixing units.

Some tapes use different layouts or markings. An educational NIST metric ruler resource (SP 376) shows centimeter and millimeter scales for learning and small-object exercises; it is a ruler resource, not a substitute for a long tape.

How to get a reliable measurement

  • Keep the blade aligned and as straight as practical. A skewed or sagging tape can distort the reading.
  • Seat the hook correctly. For an outside measurement, pull the hook against the object’s edge. For an inside measurement, push it against the inside surface. The hook may move slightly by design to compensate for its thickness.
  • Account for the case only when needed. If you place the case against a corner for an inside measurement, use the case length printed on it and add that length only if the displayed reading excludes it.
  • Check the endpoint graduation and the tape’s condition. A bent or damaged hook can affect the result. For consequential work, remeasure before cutting or recording dimensions.
  • Use one intended scale consistently. On a dual-scale tape, confirm that each reading comes from the correct row or edge.

The practical reading method is described in The Home Depot’s tape-measure guide and the BCcampus measuring-tape resource.

What red numbers, diamonds and other special marks mean

Some tapes add marks for common construction layouts. The Home Depot guide describes red 16-inch marks on many tapes and black diamonds or triangles used for truss layouts; BCcampus also describes arrows and diamonds associated with framing layouts. These conventions can vary by tape and trade, so consult the manufacturer’s legend before relying on a symbol for a build. For an ordinary length measurement, read the numbered scale and its unit graduations; the layout symbols are supplemental.

What a tape reading says about accuracy

A readable graduation is not, by itself, a guarantee that the measurement is accurate to that fine a level. NIST explains that tape graduations are produced using reference tapes or computer-controlled printing and that calibration compares graduation positions with a laser-interferometer reference. It cites a tolerance of 0.79 mm (1/32 inch) for a 1.82 m (6-foot) tape used for buying and selling goods under NIST Handbook 44. That tolerance is specific to that context; it is not a guarantee for every consumer tape or every measurement.

NIST also describes its laboratory’s ability to measure a meter with a standard uncertainty of ±350 nanometers and a tape tunnel more than 60 m long that can measure a tape with an accuracy of 0.1 mm. These are laboratory capabilities, not the expected accuracy of an ordinary job-site measurement. The uncertainty of a tape measurement has multiple contributors, including repeatability across graduations, so neither inch nor metric markings are inherently more accurate.
