Damask is a figured woven fabric: its pattern is made by changing the weave so the motif and background reflect light differently. The design often appears on both sides in reverse. The name describes the fabric’s pattern and construction—not a particular fiber, quality, or place of manufacture.
How damask fabric gets its pattern
The Fitzwilliam Museum defines damask as a “woven figured textile with one warp and one weft in which the pattern is formed by a contrast of binding systems, and appears on the face and the back in reverse positions.” In practical terms, different parts of the weave create brighter and more matte areas, so the motif stands out as light shifts across the cloth. Satin structures are common in damask; twill structures are also used. Fitzwilliam Museum terminology record; Spanish Ministry of Culture terminology resource.
Damask is not simply a printed design or embroidery laid over a plain fabric. In technically precise usage, the pattern comes from the weave itself. Retail terminology can be broader, however, so a product described as damask may not have precisely the same construction as every other damask textile.
Is damask linen?
Not necessarily. Damask is a style of woven pattern, not a fiber name. It can be made from linen, silk, cotton, wool, rayon (also called viscose), or blends. Early damask was silk, while modern examples use a wider range of fibers, according to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston’s CAMEO glossary and the Office québécois de la langue française. For a tablecloth, napkin, or other household textile, check the product label for fiber composition rather than inferring it from the word “damask.” If searching for a linen damask tablecloth, confirm that the listing actually specifies linen and read its care instructions.
What is damask used for?
Damask is often associated with table linens, including tablecloths and napkins. Documented uses also include upholstery, drapery, and book covers. The right choice depends on the particular fabric’s fiber, construction, finish, and intended use; the word damask alone does not establish that a textile is especially durable, luxurious, or costly. Where does the name come from?
The name is historically associated with Damascus, a city known in historical accounts for textiles and trade. The CAMEO glossary describes damask as a decorative, reversible-pattern textile first made in Damascus in the Middle Ages, with the technique later spreading into Europe. It notes that mechanical methods for weaving damask were introduced in 1835. This is a broad historical outline, not proof that a modern fabric bearing the name was made in Syria. CAMEO glossary.
Later European production is documented at the TextielMuseum in Tilburg, which preserves a historic damask weaving atelier with 19th-century Jacquard looms, pattern drawings, Jacquard cards, sample books, and table linens. The museum records that W.J. van Hoogerwou & Zonen specialized in hand-woven linen from the middle of the 19th century until the company closed in 1970. TextielMuseum weaving mill.

How should you care for damask?
Care depends on the specific fiber, dyes, finishes, age, and condition. For a modern household textile, follow the maker’s care label rather than relying on the word damask as a washing instruction.
Antique, heirloom, or fragile textiles need more caution. The Canadian Conservation Institute advises that special textiles be assessed before wet-cleaning and recommends consulting a qualified textile conservator. Household washers and dryers may be too rough for delicate pieces; this conservation guidance is aimed particularly at special textiles, not a blanket rule for every new tablecloth.
