Avocado-green bathrooms are attracting fresh interest, but the evidence points to a design conversation—not a proven, universal return to matching 1970s suites. For a modern update, treat the colour as a considered accent or focal point, then choose how bold to go with tiles, a bath, accessories or a fuller colour scheme.
Are avocado bathrooms back in fashion?
There is a real revival of interest in coloured bathroom fixtures and retro palettes, but “back” needs qualification. In a 2024 Wickes survey, 27% of British homeowners aged 25–34 said avocado was the colour they would most like to use in a bathroom upgrade. Wickes polled 2,115 homeowners and consulted 700 design consultants for its Great Bathroom Report; the figures were reported by PerthNow. This is a stated preference among a particular survey group, not a count of completed renovations or a measure of every age group and region.
Avocado suites are closely associated with 1960s and 1970s interiors. The Guardian’s account of the period describes avocado as one of the more muted colours that followed earlier pastel bathroom palettes, before white suites became dominant. Its report also notes renewed customer interest in coloured bathroom pieces and parts. That history helps explain the appeal: avocado can feel nostalgic, distinctive and warmer than an all-white scheme without being as bright as some earlier bathroom colours. So the trend is worth considering if you like the colour, but the available figures do not establish that avocado suites are returning widely across the housing market. The practical question is how much of the room you want to commit to it.

How much avocado green should you use?
Think about two things before choosing a finish: how easily you could change it later, and how much visual attention you want the colour to command. The following options move from a small, reversible trial to a defining fixture. The styling guidance reflects approaches described by designers in Livingetc, Ideal Home and Woman & Home; the commitment comparison is a practical way to apply that advice, not a tested performance ranking.

How do you modernise an avocado bathroom?
Start with a small colour test
If you already have white or neutral fixtures, begin with textiles or accessories. An avocado bath mat or green accessory set can show how the colour behaves in your room before you commit to tile or sanitaryware. Ideal Home gives these kinds of pieces as examples; product listings and availability can change, so treat them as categories to look for rather than guaranteed current stock.

Use tile to make a contained feature
A tiled shower area or single feature wall gives avocado a clear place in the scheme while allowing the rest of the room to stay neutral. Pale green can soften the retro reference; a deeper avocado reads more boldly. Keep grout, flooring and adjacent wall finishes in view when selecting tile, so the feature works with the materials already in the room. Livingetc quotes a Ca’ Pietra representative on using tiles as a way to introduce the colour.
Let a coloured fixture lead
An avocado bath or other coloured sanitaryware can be the room’s focal point. Rather than matching every fixture, keep nearby surfaces quieter and use natural materials such as warm wood to add balance. Livingetc discusses avocado-green baths, while its quoted guidance from BC Designs presents coloured sanitaryware as a focal-point option.

Choose a palette for the mood you want
Neutrals and warm wood create a quieter, contemporary setting for avocado. If you want the room to feel more playful and intentionally retro, designers also suggest bolder combinations involving pink, mustard or pattern. These are different stylistic routes, not competing rules: the first lets the green stand out against a calm backdrop; the second makes colour and pattern part of the whole design.

- How permanent should the colour be? Accessories are simpler to change than tile or a bath, so choose the level of commitment that suits your plans for the room.
- What should be the focal point? If the bath or tile feature is avocado, avoid making every surface compete for attention unless you deliberately want a maximalist scheme.
- Which direction suits the rest of the room? Warm wood and neutrals give the colour breathing space; pink, mustard and pattern make the look more exuberant.
- Are you responding to a trend or to your own taste? Survey interest can make avocado feel newly visible, but a bathroom finish is a longer-term design choice. Select it because you want to live with it, not because a reported trend guarantees future popularity.
For a low-risk update, introduce green through accessories. For a more architectural change, contain it in tile. Choose coloured sanitaryware when you want the fixture itself to define the room; choose the maximalist route only if you want the colour story to extend across multiple surfaces.
