An M6 screw has a metric thread with a nominal diameter of 6 mm. The common coarse version has a 1.0 mm pitch, so it may be marked M6 × 1. That label identifies the thread size—not the screw’s length, head, drive, material, strength or exact fit. Check those details before choosing a replacement or drilling a hole.
What does M6 mean?
The “M” indicates a metric screw thread, and “6” is its nominal thread diameter: 6 mm. It is a nominal designation, not a promise that every measured point on every screw will be exactly 6 mm. The common coarse pitch is 1.0 mm: the distance along the screw’s axis between matching points on adjacent thread forms. When pitch is written explicitly, the designation is M6 × 1.
A plain M6 designation commonly refers to the coarse pitch, but the part specification is the final authority. Confirm the pitch against the nut, tapped hole or drawing rather than relying on diameter alone.
What does the M6 label leave unspecified?
M6 tells you the thread’s nominal diameter, not the complete fastener specification. Select or verify these details for the assembly:

- Length: the length required by the joint; the way length is measured can depend on the head style.
- Head form and dimensions: these affect clearance, appearance and whether the head sits proud or flush.
- Drive: for example, a hex socket, which determines the tool needed and access required.
- Material and finish: these affect suitability for the environment and assembly.
- Strength class and tolerance fit: required details depend on the fastener specification and application.
For a replacement, match the existing thread and pitch first, then check length, head, drive, material and finish. A screw that looks similar may not be interchangeable if its head standard or dimensions differ.
How do M6 head types compare?
The following are examples reported by MLC UK for specific head standards, not dimensions that apply to every M6 screw of that shape. Check the product drawing and governing standard before relying on a clearance dimension.

What size drill bit is needed for an M6 screw?
The correct drill size depends on whether you are making a threaded hole or a clearance hole. MLC UK gives these common reference values for standard M6 coarse thread:

These are general guide values, not universal engineering guarantees. The tap, workpiece material, desired engagement and required fit can change the appropriate choice. Use the project drawing or applicable specification where one exists.
Before tapping
- Confirm that the intended thread is M6 coarse, with a 1.0 mm pitch, and that it matches the screw or bolt that will be used.
- Check the tap manufacturer’s recommended pilot-drill size for the tap and material.
- Drill the pilot hole to the specified diameter, then follow the tap maker’s instructions for cutting the thread.
Before making a clearance hole
- Check the fastener drawing or relevant standard for the required clearance.
- Confirm the screw can pass through the hole while the joint still locates and clamps as intended.
- Check that the head and any washer have suitable bearing area and clearance for the assembly.
How are M6 screw sizes standardised?
Metric thread standards cover different parts of the specification. ISO 261 sets the general plan for metric thread sizes, ISO 724 gives basic dimensions, and ISO 965 covers thread tolerances. ISO’s listing for ISO 965-6:2025, Edition 1, published 2025-07-25, describes limits for major, pitch and minor diameters for the metric threads within its scope. It refers to ISO 261 and profiles in accordance with ISO 68-1.

Standards have editions and scopes; do not treat a standard number as a substitute for checking the applicable drawing or fastener specification. ISO 965-2:2024 is also listed for relevant tolerance classes, with a scope referring to ISO 262 and ISO 68-1. Those scopes should not be blended, and a detailed tolerance value should be taken from the applicable standard edition.

- Identify the mating thread. Confirm that the nut or tapped hole is metric M6 and verify the pitch. Do not force a screw that does not start freely; a pitch mismatch or damaged thread can bind and cause damage.
- Choose the length. Use the assembly drawing or compare with the original, accounting for the head style and joint thickness.
- Match the head and drive. Check the head’s diameter and height, whether it must sit flush, and whether the required driver can reach it.
- Match material, finish and strength specification. Use the values required by the project; the M6 designation does not supply them.
- Verify the hole and fit. Use the specified tap drill or clearance-hole size for the actual assembly, rather than assuming a general reference value is suitable.
Does M6 determine load capacity or tightening torque?
No. M6 alone does not establish a safe load, recommended torque, corrosion resistance or suitability for a particular construction application. Those depend on the fastener’s grade and material, thread engagement, joint geometry, surface or coating and service conditions. Use the project specification or qualified engineering guidance for a load-bearing connection; a universal capacity or torque cannot be inferred from the M6 label.
