A “suicide cord” is an informal name for a cord with a male plug at each end. Either plug’s exposed pins can become energized, creating a risk of severe electric shock or electrocution. Using one to connect a generator to household wiring can also send electricity back onto utility lines, putting lineworkers and others at risk. Do not plug in or experiment with one.
What the name means—and why the cord is dangerous
“Suicide cord” is a nickname, not a formal technical product category. It refers to a cord with male plugs at both ends. Because the pins on either end are exposed, they can become energized; touching them can cause severe shock or electrocution.
That hazard is especially serious when someone tries to use the cord to feed a home’s wiring from a generator. Without suitable equipment to isolate the home from utility service, generator power can travel back onto utility lines. Seattle City Light, the Missouri Public Service Commission, and New Jersey’s Division of Fire Safety warn about this backfeed danger, including the risk to utility workers repairing lines. Safe ways to use a generator
Power an individual appliance
Connect the generator directly to the appliance with a properly rated outdoor extension cord in good condition, and follow the generator manufacturer’s instructions. PSE&G recommends this approach in most cases. PSE&G Generator Safety

Power household circuits
Have a qualified electrician select and install appropriate transfer equipment, such as a compatible transfer switch or approved interlock equipment. The right setup depends on the generator, the home’s electrical system, capacity needs, and local code and permitting requirements. Transfer equipment provides a safe means of isolating the home from utility service; do not rely on opening a breaker to make an improvised connection safe.
