A nitrogen generator separates nitrogen from compressed air and supplies the nitrogen-enriched gas to a process on site. The two common approaches are pressure swing adsorption (PSA), which cycles air through adsorbent material, and membrane separation, which passes air through hollow fibers. The right system depends on the required purity, flow, pressure, feed-air quality, and site conditions.

What a nitrogen generator does

A nitrogen generator does not make nitrogen from a chemical feedstock. It separates nitrogen from compressed air. Because air also contains oxygen, water vapor, and other gases, the system conditions the feed air and separates its components to produce a nitrogen-enriched stream.

On-site generators are used in industrial settings including food and beverage packaging, electronics manufacturing, chemical processing, and laboratories. Whether a particular generator is suitable depends on the gas quality and flow the specific process requires.

How a PSA nitrogen generator works

Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) uses carbon molecular sieve in one or more vessels. Under pressure, the material preferentially adsorbs oxygen and other components from the compressed air, allowing nitrogen-enriched gas to leave the vessel. Lowering the pressure releases the captured gases and regenerates the material for another cycle.

  1. Condition the compressed air. A compressor supplies air, which is treated to manage water, particles, and oil contaminants to the levels required by the system.
  2. Adsorb unwanted components. Pressurized air enters a vessel containing carbon molecular sieve. Oxygen and other components are preferentially captured, while nitrogen-enriched gas exits.
  3. Regenerate the sieve. The vessel is depressurized so the captured gases can be released.
  4. Alternate vessels for ongoing production. In a twin-vessel arrangement, one vessel produces nitrogen while the other regenerates; the vessels then switch roles.

Kuraray describes its carbon molecular sieve as using differences in adsorption speed associated with molecular size. The practical mechanism is preferential adsorption followed by pressure-cycle regeneration, rather than a simple claim that the material rigidly blocks oxygen by size alone. Kuraray’s nitrogen gas generator overview and Ingersoll Rand’s PSA introduction describe the technology.

How membrane separation works

A membrane generator sends compressed, conditioned air through bundles of hollow polymer fibers. Oxygen and some other gases permeate through the fiber walls more readily than nitrogen. The gas that remains is therefore enriched in nitrogen. Pneumatech describes this as continuous production; its page gives a representative outlet purity range, not a guarantee for every model or operating condition. Read Pneumatech’s nitrogen generator overview.

Consideration PSA Membrane
Separation mechanism Carbon molecular sieve preferentially adsorbs oxygen and other components under pressure; depressurization regenerates the sieve. Hollow fibers allow oxygen and other gases to permeate more readily, leaving nitrogen-enriched gas.
Supplier-stated purity examples Pneumatech states up to 99.999% for its PSA description; this is not a universal guarantee. Pneumatech states 95% to 99.5% for its membrane description; this is not a universal guarantee.
Operating pattern Vessels cycle between adsorption and regeneration; twin-vessel systems alternate roles. Pneumatech describes membrane generation as continuous.
Selection basis Compare the chosen model’s guaranteed purity and flow at the required delivery pressure, with suitable air treatment and operating conditions.

The purity figures are supplier-stated capabilities on Pneumatech’s page, whose publication date is not stated and which was accessed in 2026. They should not be read as industry-wide performance averages. PSA and membrane are not automatic proxies for a particular cost, complexity, or suitability: compare actual system data at the intended operating point.

What equipment a nitrogen generation system may need

A generator is often only one part of the installation. Parker’s typical PSA configuration includes a compressor, air receiver, water separator, coalescing filters, compressed-air dryer, oil-vapor reduction filter, dust filter, PSA generator, nitrogen buffer vessel, storage, and delivery to the application. The scope varies with feed-air quality and required gas quality, so verify what is included in a proposed system.

Parker’s May 2022 brochure gives figures for its described configuration: a refrigerated dryer typically reduces water vapor to around a 40°F pressure dew point, while a desiccant dryer can achieve -40°F or better. It describes an appropriately treated and maintained PSA system as capable of up to 99.999% purity (10 ppm remaining oxygen) and dew points down to -58°F. These are brochure-specific figures, not universal equipment specifications; Parker recommends a desiccant dryer and oil-vapor reduction filter upstream for critical purity applications. See Parker’s typical PSA configuration brochure.

Some features are product-specific. For example, Hitachi says its N2 Pack stores generated nitrogen and monitors purity with an integrated oxygen sensor; do not assume every generator includes a receiver, buffer, or oxygen analyzer. Hitachi N2 Pack product information.

What to specify before choosing a system

Share the process requirements and site conditions with a supplier or system integrator. In particular, document:

  • Purity: the required nitrogen concentration at the point of use and whether monitoring or an alarm is needed.
  • Flow: average consumption and peak demand, not just a daily total.
  • Pressure: required delivery pressure and any pressure losses or downstream boosting needs.
  • Dew point and gas quality: requirements at the application, including allowable moisture, oil, or particles.
  • Feed-air conditions: inlet pressure and temperature, moisture, oil, and particulate load.
  • Operating profile and site: operating hours, ambient temperature, altitude, available power, and redundancy requirements.
  • Package scope: confirm whether the quote includes the compressor, receiver, dryer, filters, generator, storage or buffer, monitoring, controls, and any booster.

NITRAISE identifies inlet conditions and site factors as design considerations. Its PSA system overview can help frame those questions, but the final specification should be based on the actual process and operating point.

Cost and safety considerations

On-site generation can be considered as an alternative to delivered nitrogen, but available supplier descriptions do not establish that it is always cheaper or provide a universal payback period. A site-specific comparison needs delivered-gas pricing, demand and peak usage, electricity and compressed-air costs, capital cost, maintenance, backup supply, and uptime requirements.

Nitrogen can displace oxygen, so leaks or venting should not be treated as harmless in occupied spaces. Installation requirements vary by jurisdiction; check applicable pressure-system rules, regulator guidance, and site oxygen-deficiency controls before designing or operating a system.
